One of the more buzzy flicks of this year is the Finnish action movie Sisu. In a year where many of the more traditional and practical action movies are killing it with audiences, this one is rated toward the top of the heap. After a little theatrical run for the import, Lionsgate has put it out on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ay. Released on July 11th, the film comes with two featurettes and 5.1 TrueHD sound. You can order yourself a copy of this one by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review at the bottom of the page.

Coming this October: Freaks / The Unknown / The Mystic: Tod Browning’s Sideshow Shockers, three pre-Code spine-chillers from a master of the morbid; The Others, a gothic supernatural tale set on a remote country estate from Alejandro Amenábar; and Nikyatu Jusu’s Nanny, a haunting modern-day fable of cultural dislocation in New York City. Plus: Videodrome, David Cronenberg’s ingeniously prescient 1980s body-horror vision, and Don’t Look Now, Nicolas Roeg’s unforgettably disturbing psychodrama—now on 4K UHD.

I don’t know if this has ever happened before, but when three of your favorite bands all release studio albums in the same year, that can be ironic, iconic, a sign, or simply coincidence. It’s certainly the most latter of all of those, but it didn’t demean the anticipation any less. Between Paramore’s This Is Why, Metallica’s 72 Seasons, and now Dave Matthews Band’s Walk Around the Moon, Paramore put out the most enjoyable effort, in my humble opinion. Still, there’s an enjoyable rock-engaging experience to be had with each recording. With DMB’s ninth studio album out this past May, it’s time to take a quick look at this 12-song record.

I’m going to make it a habit to do album reviews well after they’ve been released. The simple reason being I’m far too knee-jerk reactionary when initially hearing a new release. So that brings us to Metallica’s 11th studio album, 72 Seasons. The title is a reference to the first 18 years of someone’s life that, as lead singer James Hetfield stated, “form our true or false selves.”

The sequel to a movie we never knew we needed came out of nowhere earlier this year – Book Club: The Next Chapter! I wrote that sentence initially because it’s absolute truth, however I also write it because, I can’t lie, I enjoyed this film. In some ways, it’s actually better than it’s predecessor. Do these movie besties, played by iconic actresses, fill the bill for a woman-centered light comedy? Find out in-depth below! Don’t forget to click the paid link after reading if you feel tempted to see what book the girls dive into this time…

I’ve been told this is my “mission” if I choose to accept it. Well Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One got me out of movie review retirement so it looks like I accepted it. It’s been over a year since I reviewed a film with my last being last year’s Batman flick. And no I’m not going to use any corny John Wick crack like “yeah I’m thinking I’m back.” I accepted this review outing simply because I am a huge fan of 2018’s Mission: Impossible Fallout. I’m going to get blasted by what I say next, but I got to be honest with myself. I wish they would have ended the franchise with the movie Fallout. Ethan Hunt got everything he wanted in the end and it’s a perfect movie to me, but I digress. Continue reading ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (Movie Review)’

Charlton Heston portrays Mike Vargas, the Mexican chief of narcotics who sets out to uncover the facts surrounding a car bomb that has killed a wealthy American businessman on the US side of the border. As Vargas investigates, his newly-wed wife Susie (Janet Leigh, two years before Hitchcock’s Psycho) is kidnapped by a gang out to exact vengeance for the prosecution of the brother of their leader (Akim Tamiroff). Meanwhile, Vargas’ inquiries become progressively more obfuscated by the American cop Hank Quinlan (played by Welles himself, in one of the most imposing and unforgettable screen performances of his career), a besotted incarnation of corruption who alternately conspires with Susie’s captors and seeks solace in the brothel of the Gypsy madame (Marlene Dietrich) who comforted him in bygone times. Welles’ final studio-system picture has at last become secure in its status as one of the greatest films ever made. It remains a testament to the genius of Welles –– a film of Shakespearean richness, inexhaustible. The Masters of Cinema Series is extremely proud to present Touch of Evil in its UK debut on 4K UHD Blu-ray.

2023 is the year we are supposed to see majority of the remainder for James Cameron’s catalog to be out on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. Sporting a new Dolby Atmos track and updated restoration, transfer, the disc hit the stores on June 20th. Its a 3-Disc set with 1 4K UHD disc and 2 accompanying Blu-rays. The second disc of said standard Blu-rays contains the extras. You’ll also get a digital code for redemption as well as a load of the original extras (and a couple new). One thing the studio folks seem to be learning here is…when you have a lower budgeted project…try popping it in the theaters to make some cash instead of being a streaming exclusive. Its two-fold. You make money in the theaters and then it becomes a more attracting thing to stream because of that. Warner learned that the right way with Evil Dead Rise, the fifth film in the Sam Raimi created series. Intended for Max, it wound up with quite a successful theatrical run. Now, its come to 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray…without bonus features. Bummer, but hey, owning it on disc should be good enough for us collectors these days. It arrived on June 27th. You can order yourself a copy by clicking the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review.

One of the most gigantic movies of the year, and our only billion dollar earner in 2023, is The Super Mario Bros. Movie. A film that was predestined for success, it reached out to many generations in terms of interest. It still is making money, but Universal was like…lets do home video already. And so, on June 13th, they popped it out with no real notice. I personally didn’t get the 4K press release until it was already on shelves. But, anywho, there are a couple featurettes here and an Atmos track to bring it to live. Order yourself a copy, if you please, by using the paid Amazon Associates link at the end of the review.
