The original Candyman is what I consider one of the absolute scariest horror films of all time. Took a while for me to feel okay with looking in a mirror at night time after seeing that movie. Tony Todd will always be associated with that role, but for good reason, he’s outstanding. As was with every horror figure around the time, they couldn’t just be one and done. Everybody gets a sequel. Candyman’s second kill spree was no where near as great as his first one (A tops horror film of all time), but its still a pretty decent movie. If you really want to see bad, then continue moving on to the third one, which was lead by Donna D’Errico (When’s the last time you heard that name?). The first Candyman isn’t available yet in the US for Blu-ray, but there is an all-region edition available. Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh, however, is kicking off the year, and getting a nice release from Scream Factory as the begin 2015. Remember Bolt? Disney’s computer animated feature about a dog that believed it had superpowers, given that he was the star of a TV series. I enjoyed that film for what it was, as it had a warm spirit and lots of humor. That in mind, it always felt like Disney taking a film like Toy Story and turning it into something a lot less complex. Big Hero 6 feels like Disney’s attempt to reconstruct Pixar’s The Incredibles into a much more traditional superhero film (with lots of Disney-style emotional content), complete with a young, orphaned hero, the means to put a team of high-tech crime-fighters together, and a masked villain with a dastardly plan in mind. What really makes this film work though is the sense of wonder, fun, and enjoyment to be had in its execution, which is largely embodied by one of Disney’s best new sidekick characters, Baymax. Predictability aside, a large, marshmallow-like robot, and the colorful adventure he is a part of, will easily be plenty of fun for a wide audience.

Hey, it’s that Batman documentary and we at Why So Blu tend to support all things Batman-focused, especially special projects like this! I have been interested in and covering this documentary since its Kickstarter campaign launched way back in March of 2013. Before Comic Con I was able to see the film and was eventually able to speak with the film’s writer/director, which was quite inspiring. For those unaware, Legends of the Knight is a documentary about how Batman has gone on to inspire the power of the myth of superheroes and what real life individuals have gone on to do with that line of thinking in a positive manner. It features a lot of interesting stories and interviews and the film is now coming out for everyone to own this November. Continue on to learn more about this film and its release.

So today’s history lesson focuses on Disney’s acquisition of Marvel Entertainment way back in 2009. Honestly, I can’t believe it has been that long, but I digress because I’m making money off their acquisition regardless in my stock portfolio. However, getting back to our history lesson, back then Disney wanted something new and exciting so CEO Bob Iger encouraged his company to explore all of Marvel’s properties, even the unknown ones, to find the next big thing. The idea was to pick an obscure title out of the bunch so Disney would have the freedom they needed to come up with their own version of the idea. And that ladies and gentlemen is how this next big thing we are gathered here to discuss was discovered. Of course I’m talking about Big Hero 6, which we should just get this over already to clear anyone who had this question about this “Marvel” film being produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, it is not part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is set in its own standalone universe and I am A-OK with that. So let’s stop stalling in order to make this opening paragraph more robust and impressive and let’s get to talking some Big Hero 6! Jersey Boys has been an uber popular music for the last many years. It travels city to city and wows and pleases audiences across the United States. The film is a jukebox musical, meaning it features already established pop songs. But, that’s because its telling the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons so you kinda have to be that type of a musical. This film adaptation was once a passion project of Jon Favreau, but it wound up falling dead and never going anywhere. Then, oddly it was resurrected and Clint Eastwood was the guy at the helm. It seemed an odd marriage, and as you’ll see, it was one. Personally, I’d never had the pleasure of seeing the stage production of Jersey Boys and I really don’t think this film was any sort of supplement. Continue reading ‘Jersey Boys (Blu-ray Review)’

There was never a question as to whether or not I was going to see Interstellar theatrically. On that same topic, there was also never even a question as to whether my first time checking it out would be in IMAX either. The only question I had unanswered throughout this whole year up until a few weeks ago was how early I would be able to screen it. You see, when it comes to the 44-year old director Christopher Nolan, in my opinion he’s earned the right to make a stinker or two and I’ll stand by the man, support him and walk in blindly to whatever his name is attached to no matter what, just like I did for Man of Steel last year. Ever since 2000’s Memento the guy has been on a non-stop roll in the “success” category. Simply put, he makes the movies this reviewer wants to see. I also love the fact that he’s anti-technology when it comes to email and smart phones and is just all business. I applaud that. I wish I could adopt his philosophies and stances in my life, but I digress. So I guess you can say Interstellar really had me at hello all this time before I even stepped one foot into the theater this past Monday evening. It had Christopher Nolan’s name on the bill and in any universe that’s good enough for me. Continue reading ‘Interstellar Never Defies Gravity Because Of Too Much Dead Weight (Movie Review)’

This past season of the hit animated FX comedy Archer took bold steps, as it ditched a lot of the regular elements of the show in favor of a very long journey in the form of Archer Vice. While the next season seems to be putting things back in order, feel free to re-live Season 5’s wild adventures on Blu-ray/DVD on January 6th. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

We now have a title! Let’s face it, there is only speculation to be garnered from this, rather than actual news, but with the filming of Star Wars Episode VII now having been completed, there is certainly going to be more movement in spreading awareness of the next installment in what is one of the biggest franchises of all time. We may have no real details regarding the story or which actor plays who (I think Mark Hamil is Watto’s nephew or something…), but we do at least now have the title for this highly anticipated film. Is that going to lead into a brief teaser trailer in the near future? One could hope, but for now, continue on to see the official title announcement for Episode VII.

A lot of times there is an urge to compare films to other films. It may not be the best way to go about things, but it happens, regardless if one really wants to or not. I remember seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was very young and being transfixed by it (regardless of if I ‘got it’). Apollo 13 was a film I saw in theaters a few times, as I was at an age where space and astronauts were the coolest things ever. The Right Stuff I caught later, though it has become a favorite film of mine (along with 2001). Having now seen Interstellar, a science fiction film from co-writer/director Christopher Nolan, I cannot help but think of these films that have contributed to my thoughts on the genre and how they served to influence Interstellar in various ways. Still, regardless of how I think Interstellar matches up to those other films, what is important for this review is to communicate why I found it so worthwhile to go on this journey and would hope many others do so as well by way of watching the film on the biggest screen available to them.

You know that expression that says “you had me at hello”? Well the same train of thought can be applied here when this title, The Guest, because it is billed as “from the creators of You’re Next.” They really did have me at hello there. Even though I have not seen The Guest yet, that one line “from the creators of You’re Next” has me wanting to see it. Call it brilliant marketing, call it what you want. It worked on me! The Guest Blu-ray Combo Pack will be released on January 6th. So in the meantime please check out the full press release down below from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. One year ago today, I wrote an article focusing on 14 movies I’d like to see on Blu-ray for the year 2014. That article wound up becoming the pilot for what would sort of be a regular week-to-week series from me, whining about a movie that’s only on DVD or VHS and not here to Blu-ray yet. It also made new release announcements an extra bit of fun for me if one of my random requests wound up coming to fruition. From the original list, 6 titles (around 43%) wound up finding a Blu-ray release this year. In addition, from my weekly articles, 3 of those wound up coming to fruition to make the Wishlist have about a 20% success rate. While I’ve had a lot of fun with these pieces, due to life, work, busy-ness and whatnot, the Wishlist is going to be moving from the weekly format to a monthly one. Its not that I’m out of ideas, its just that I am not having the sort of time I used to in writing these pieces. But hey, today is a celebration of these pieces, so, let’s take a look at some of our success stories from the past year and then let’s do 15 more for 2015! I posted about this back in September and now we have a result! The latest season of Arrested Development is coming to DVD and it now has box art designed by a fan. Feelings on this season may have been met with mixed criticism, but it does seem clear that a lot of effort went into creating something quite ambitious, rather than just being a ton of fan favorite jokes lumped into a lazy season of television. Ideally one can revisit this season and maybe admire more about this season, but regardless, continue on to see the official box art and learn more about this upcoming release.

Does everyone remember the Ed Harris-Eva Longoria-Michael Pena border crossing uber drama that took the box office by storm this past summer? No? Oh yeah, cuz it only opened in three theaters and expanded to a total of fourteen by the end of its run. As a matter of fact, its theatrical run ended just a few weeks ago to be precise. It only took just under $60,000 in its domestic run, but according to Wikipedia the film has wound up doing over $25 million globally. That’s not too shabby for a little film like this boasting more character acts and no real star power. The movie about border crossing, the controversies and the dangers of also marks the feature film debut of writer and director Michael Berry. Continue reading ‘Frontera (Blu-ray Review)’

Tusk is a film that got away from me when it was out theatrically so despite some of the negative reviews out there I really want to see it because admittedly so I liked what I saw in the trailer, but I have fallen for that trick before. LOL. So hear goes my sales pitch to y’all. Justin Long stars in the supposedly hilarious and bizarre monster movie, Tusk, arriving on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) and DVD (plus Digital) December 30th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. “The author behind Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and the director of The American have joined forces to seemingly put together the most deliberately paced, convoluted spy thriller since those two films I just mentioned for A Most Wanted Man.” That is one way to sum up this espionage-drama based on John le Carre’s novel, but it will of course get far more credit for being the last film featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman in a lead performance. A Most Wanted Man works because of this Hoffman performance (among other reasons), as the man is as stellar as ever. The film may only accomplish so much, but it is smart and crafty in its construction from both a filmmaking and script standpoint. The Blu-ray also manages to deliver a fine technical presentation.
