He’s been called the German Ed Wood. He’s began his directorial career with makes video game adaptation after video game adaptation. There’s urban legends that he keeps getting money to make movies because he has some stash of Nazi gold hidden somewhere. But, in 2009, something of an anomaly happened. Uwe Boll made a rather decent film. That film was Rampage; the story of a young man sent over the edge with rage that he goes on a killing spree in his hometown. It was actually well received and found a fanbase NOT out of irony. Uwe and star Brendan Fletcher return to the character of Bill Williamson in Rampage: Capital Punishment in what they hope is the second installment of a trilogy. Where do I begin here? Something like this is gonna go one of two ways. There’s a 98% chance something like Jersey Shore Massacre is going to be a complete piece of dung. In fact, that’s almost the obvious judgement to come from just hearing the title. Then you have that 2% off-chance that it could be a pleasurable piece of garbage or at least be exploitative enough to not be a complete waste of time going through it. It’s with this two-sided coin that I decided to roll the dice with this film. Which, so happens to be the follow up to a film (not yet on Blu-ray…don’t worry…coming soon though!) called Girls Gone Dead. Continue reading ‘Jersey Shore Massacre (Blu-ray Review)’

A film like Frank is not for everyone, but who cares? I had a lot of fun with this offbeat comedy that keeps the head of its main character inside a large papier-mâché head. The film is a comedy, a road movie of sorts, and a look at experimental/indie music culture. It is also very funny, well-acted, and a little bittersweet, given what we learn of Frank, the man behind the head. Given that Michael Fassbender can work for me in just about anything, I was not surprised to be so taken by this film, but it is still one I want to see be given a chance, because having a little (or a lot) of weird can be a very good thing.

One of last year’s biggest surprises and best boxed sets was Scream Factory’s Vincent Price Collection. Not only did it pack together 6 of his classics, including 4 from the Corman era and 2 horror staples, it also had excellent bonus material that really gave you a feel for how some of us saw Vincent growing up. I’m talking about those intros to the movies that were included. Well, Scream Factory knows how much we loved that set and they’re doing an encore, this time with 7 movies. And for those non-horror people, the titles on this one might be more of the household name variety. Today, Scream Factory has unleashed the specs for this exciting followup to last year’s set. Also, they are offering to send it to you a month early if you pre-order from their website! Cool deal, eh? Scroll down to get all the wicked, ghoulish details of the Vincent Price Collection II! I’m a big big fan of up and coming indie horror director Ti West. He reached me in an incredible way with his breakout film House Of The Devil and I’ve been following his career with great excitement ever since. His follow up, The Innkeepers was a great little follow up with a more modern approach. After it was announced he was doing a sci fi movie with Liv Tyler, but that hasn’t taken off yet. Ti then partnered up with Eli Roth to do The Sacrament. I’ll be honest, when it was first announced they’d be using the found footage aesthetic I was a little disappointed. But, Ti West did make an interesting little piece in the first V/H/S movie AND he’s a rather smart and creative director, so there had to be some logical reasoning behind it or a plan. This is the one movie I promised myself I would have nothing to do with after I learned about the abysmal PG-13 rating the filmmakers trimmed it down to be to comply with requirements of the much feared MPAA in order to get it out to a wider audience (more about that later). If it had not been for a trip up to Cleveland, OH to visit all my family and friends I can pretty much guarantee that I would have never partaken in a screening of The Expendables 3 as to my knowledge it wasn’t being screened down in Austin, TX at all. Odd, huh? Not really. From my experience that usually means the studio, like myself going into this one, didn’t have much confidence in it and wanted to get as much first weekend foot traffic in as possible to avoid the negative reviews they must’ve known would come with the early screenings. I’m just subjecting myself to the below experience to kill two birds with one stone, visit my most favorite Cleveland marketing team leader (she knows who she is) and also my favorite theater, that of Cinemark Valley View. I have so many memories there and obviously now The Expendables 3 is one of them. So let’s dispense with all the filter and formalities I’m employing here and talk about Barney (Stallone) and his old and new gang. Continue reading ‘The Expendables 3: Rocky Balboa vs. Sgt. At this point in the Expendables franchise, it seems apparent that there is little understanding as to how to really deliver on what could make these films true action delights. The story means little to me in these films, the presence of all the big name action heroes is more important than their acting, but somehow these films have yet to deliver well-directed action. There are moments that payoff, but these films still have not found a way to be consistently entertaining due to the very thing that should be most important – solid action. It may be hard to capture the sort of magic that one enjoys from the various decades of action movies, starring these heroes that have been repeatedly watched by many, but at least being able to show the action clearly would be nice. As it stands, while the effort is there and the comradery is apparent, I can still only depend on The Expendables to be mediocre.

The Giver is the story of a young hero living in a futuristic society where a governing system has seemingly made everything perfect and free of chaos, with ruminating thoughts on possible corruption lurking just beneath the surface. This seems like an interesting idea, were one not to realize how often it seems to come about. These past few years have already given us films like Divergent and The Hunger Games, and while The Giver is also a popular book now adapted into a feature film, it seems to have come at a time where we did not really need it. It is not because the book did not deserve the film treatment, but more due to how relatively slight it feels by comparison. Like it or not, a film like The Hunger Games succeeds for numerous reasons, such as its scope, the actors involved, and cultural relevance at the time. While The Giver has aspects that keep it from being a poor film, it unfortunately feels like it missed its opportunity to be a bigger deal.

We’re finally here! The Expendables 3 comes out tomorrow. This is the end of our ‘Countdown To Expendables 3’ series. And if we started with Sly we’re ending on Schwarzenegger! Today’s pick is the biggest glaring hole, not only of Arnold’s catalog, but the director, the studio and Blu-ray as a whole. We have one that seems to be one of the biggest crimes against Blu-ray humanity for not being a part of the format. And its a huge head scratcher that this title wasn’t put out in the initial years of Blu-ray.

Hammer Horror’s followup to The Woman In Black came a few months ago with The Quiet Ones. Its another spook show, but this time based on real events. That real event was “The Philip Experiment”. In short, in 1972 some Canadian parapsychologists tried to create a ghost as they believed the power to do so may have been in the human mind. While they could never get “Philip” to physically appear before them, they were successful in making contact and some communication with this ghost. The film based off the events was less successful, taking in under $10 million in US box office and $17 million worldwide. Could it be that people are over ghosts/possession movies or was it that Occulus that came out just before this one gave audiences their fill? I don’t know the answer to that, but we can go ahead and take the journey for ourselves in this review. Continue reading ‘The Quiet Ones (Blu-ray Review)’

I had plenty to say about Key & Peele on Blu-ray for their previous Blu-ray released HERE, a lot of which has to do with why the show is so successful. This success is what keeps the show going, which is why I am happy to announce details regarding the Season 3 Blu-ray release. On September 23rd, everyone will be able to enjoy all the antics that season 3 provided, including favorites like “Substitute Teacher” and “Paintboobs”. This release will also contain an assortment of bonus features as well. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

I see a lot of movies and I enjoy rewatching a lot of movies. One would think that I would rewatch movies that I especially like, but that is not necessarily true. The example that applies here is a film called Blue Steak. This was a forgettable Martin Lawrence comedy from 1999, where Lawrence starred as a jewel thief posing as a police officer. It is not especially clever, but I find it entertaining and seem to watch it, for some amount of time, whenever it appears on TV. Let’s Be Cops is similar in both being about some guys posing as police officers and that it is not especially clever either. The film is not even as good as Blue Streak, but hey, I would maybe stop to check in on Let’s Be Cops, were I to find it on TV years from now.

The year 1989 is seminal year in my life in film. It had the summer that saw my love of film grow exponentially with such franchise films at Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and License To Kill. One conversation concerning 1989 seems to have sort of been forgotten over the years. That year had five films involving deep sea science fiction adventures. Most notably remembered is James Cameron’s The Abyss, but there was also DeepStar Six, The Evil Below, Lords Of The Deep and today’s film we’re here to discuss; Leviathan. Leviathan is surprisingly the first one of these films to make the jump to Blu-ray (DeepStar Six will make its debut on the format in Japan on November 5 of this year). While not under the Collector’s Edition banner, Scream Factory has still given this underappreciated film some great extras. Continue reading ‘Leviathan (Blu-ray Review)’
