Dropping just after the weekend the new movie releases, you’ll be able to travel back in time and start from square one with Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s inception of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was a Ninja Turtle maniac back in the late 80s and early 90s. This release got me pretty pumped as there’s not much in the way of video features or featurettes on aspects of this franchise. Plus, while I was a huge fan back in the day, I was so young as to not have really dug into the production or history of them. And in my older age, all I’d really done is brush through some Wikipedia stuff if I was curious. So, here it was the DEFINITIVE history on the heroes in a half shell. That’s a pretty profound statement to make. Continue reading ‘Turtle Power – The Definitive History Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (DVD Review)’

Network television’s best show of the last two years, Hannibal, is coming to Blu-ray. The show’s second season continued its mythology building based off the Thomas Harris novels and deepened its lore. Every frame, every breath of dialogue is so carefully constructed and it shows. This show is so good, they’re bringing in elements from Hannibal and Hannibal Rising, two of the weakest novel and film pieces of the collection, for season three and I am super eager to see what they do with them. Every performer on this show brings their A-game every episode. And I must say, Mads Mikkelsen has done the impossible in pulling himself up to that Anthony Hopkins Hannibal Lector pedestal that seemed too far of a climb for any performer. Details on the fantastic second season are below. Also, pre-order your copy today. Continue reading ‘HANNIBAL Serves Up Its Second Season Sept 16 On Blu-ray’

The Railway Man is based on the World War II memoir of Eric Lomax, who is our character of focus in the film. I found the film to look and feel a little like those “safe” movies due to its gloss, polished aesthetic. But with the power of its performers and events depicted in the film, it proves to be a bit more than that. For what it was, I thought it was an engaging and pretty strong film. I was surprised in my research afterward to see how many critics found it to be merely decent and judged it as primarily that “safe” film I thought I was getting, but wasn’t delivered. While based on a true story and a memoir, I really didn’t want to get into spoiler territories with the review, as I think not knowing what lied ahead, or how things resolved were better off a surprise when watching the film. The devastating horror of a nuclear apocalypse is now reality and nine desperate strangers find themselves clinging to life in a farmhouse cellar, while radioactive fallout descends on the darkened world above. These would-be survivors face the nightmare of dwindling supplies, poisonous air and the greatest threat of all – the hordes of zombie-like refugees who want in. With each dying day, their choice becomes clearer – stay and let the makeshift shelter become their tomb or face the unknown terrors of the world outside. Starring Edward Furlong, Monica Keena, Andre Royo and C.J. Thomason, AFTERMATH takes a hard look at how far humans will go to survive. And it isn’t pretty.

Michael King (Shane Johnson) doesn’t believe in God or The Devil. Following the sudden death of his wife, the documentary filmmaker decides to make his next film about the search for the existence of the supernatural. Michael decides to make himself the center of the experiment – allowing demonologists, necromancers, and various practitioners of the occult to try the deepest and darkest spells and rituals they can find on him – in the hopes that when they fail, he’ll once and for all have proof that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than myth. But something does happen. An evil and horrifying force has taken over Michael King. And it will not let him go. Dale Dickey (
IRON MAN 3), Tomas Arana (
GLADIATOR), and Julie McNiven (
Mad Men) co-star in this intense supernatural spine-tingler from the producers of
WHITE NOISE and
THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT.

For me, Without Warning is one of the most exciting releases of 2014. No, its not Twin Peaks or Batman 1966 finally coming out, but its up there. Had I heard much about it before this release? No. I really dig the fact that Scream Factory has gotten this 34 year old film that’s never seen a home video release and are putting it out on Blu-ray and putting bonus material on it to boot. I’m all about film preservation and restoration. I’m not one who likes films to be forgotten no matter how bad they could be. Without Warning has pretty much been forgotten for a long time. How many people have been able to see this one since 1980? I’ve heard there have been bootlegs over the years, but the answer is not many. And of those, who remember it? Well, paint me with excitement as I finally got to see one of those truly “lost” films of horror yesteryear. Continue reading ‘Without Warning (Blu-ray Review)’

As I mentioned in the press release for the Blu-ray release of Motel Hell from Scream Factory, I have never seen Motel Hell before. However, when you say the title, I can describe every detail of its VHS box art for you. This thing was an absolute staple in the horror section at VHS rental stores back in the 80s and 90s. Even the tape rental section at the local grocery stores carried this one. And at every video store I always had the goal to watch every horror movie in the horror section. But, I’ve obvioulsy failed as I never ever picked this one up. I have no idea why, I just might have thought the box looked more weird than scary. Back then I always went home with whatever I thought would frighten the living bejeezus out of me. Continue reading ‘Motel Hell – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)’

Another month, another remake, director Phil Alden Robinson’s The Angriest Man in Brooklyn is a remake of a 1997 Israeli film The 92 Minutes of Mr. Baum. Both films deal with the idea of anger and mortality. The new version has a recognizable cast of Robin Williams, Mila Kunis (who is also an Executive Producer), Melissa Leo, and Peter Linkage. The story deals with a bitter Henry Altmann (Robin Williams) who is bridled with anger and has to cope his life choices when a bitter and mentally beaten down medical professional (Mila Kunis) accidently gives him an incredibly small time table to live. The film takes you on what could be Henry’s final moments in life while the people who care for him are scrambling to find him in Brooklyn. The classic cult comedy SORDID LIVES, dubbed “Screamingly Funny!” by Variety, debuts across all digital platformsincluding iTunes and WolfeOnDemand beginning Aug. 29, before making its long-awaited debut on Blu-ray™/DVD Combo Pack Sept. 30 from Wolfe Video. Mel Gibson is one of the newest action heroes of 80s/90s to hop on board the Expendable train. He’s actually the villain of the upcoming film. And what a dynamite choice. Gibson was pretty much unstoppable from Lethal Weapon to Signs. Hell, for me, I’d say from ’79 in Mad Max to then, but he wasn’t a huge marquee named with a big box office draw until ’87 with Lethal Weapon. He’s slowly been creeping back into films, but like the rest of the bunch, isn’t the draw he used to be. So, our “Countdown To Expendables 3” continues with a very terrific, very early film in Mel Gibson’s career, as well as director Peter Weir.

Okay, time to admit defeat. On Facebook when I posted the Sleeping Beauty Diamond Edition announcement, I predicted Maleficent would be coming out on Blu-ray and DVD the same day or following week. It appears I was off by a month. Nonetheless, Disney brings their big summer hit home on November 4th. I didn’t get the opportunity to see it as my daughter was born that week. But, here I’ll get to see the film in the glorious comfort of my home on the wonderful Blu-ray format. Scroll below for details from Disney and also secure yourself a copy when it comes out by clicking the lovely Amazon link below.
