There is a level of familiarity to musician biopics at this point that tends to keep me from becoming too excited about the prospect of a new one. With varying degrees of separation, they mostly tend to follow a formula, much like any film that hits similar beats as its predecessors within the same sub-genres (just look at the Guardians of the Galaxy, which opens on the same day, as it is supremely entertaining, but still following a proven formula). Keeping that in mind, I am also a big fan of James Brown and was happy to go in to this film pretty open-minded (as I generally do). If there is one way to express how much I ended up enjoying Get On Up, it would have to be by stating that no musician biopic has ever made me want to dance as much as Get On Up did. While the film only occasionally falls into some familiar trappings, Chadwick Boseman’s lead performance is terrific in a film that tries to be fair to its main subject, and add plenty of soul to the genre.

When you’re talking the Marvel Cinematic Universe I’m in the mood for something different, what about you? Going into the press screening of Guardians of the Galaxy this past Tuesday evening “different” is what I was hoping for. I wasn’t expecting anything spectacular other than just simply wanting to have a good time. The past few Marvel flicks, although rather enjoyable, have been kind of heavy and serious in tone (while keeping the Marvel humor of course). So to have something brand spanking new and capable of shaking up the Marvel universe just a tad would be very much welcomed in my world. After the piece of cr@p Transformers: Age of Extinction and the disappointment of Lucy last week in the “fun” category, I really went into this craving and hoping for the best. I wanted to be dazzled and most of all…entertained! Is that too much to ask for from a popcorn, summer blockbuster? While the word is out on what the future holds for the films from Marvel Studios, they are currently in a place of comfort, as the films produced are consistently entertaining, despite fitting into familiar structures. Given that the films all have reasonable budgets and lots of talent both behind and in front of the camera, it is not too much of a surprise that audiences generally really enjoy these movies. Guardians of the Galaxy is both the wildest step yet for Marvel and the biggest risk since 2008’s Iron Man, as it is based on an obscure comic property and lacks huge name stars in the lead roles for audiences to be easily sold on the film. With that in mind, Guardians of the Galaxy will be a real test of the Marvel brand. It helps that the film is very good. It may only break some new ground, given the setting and style of the film, but even while fitting into a familiar mold, it is a total blast of space opera-style joy.

I have no idea what the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is going to be like (though I’m optimistic). That said, there is a brand new mobile game for it and it’s available now. I spent some time playing it and it is quite enjoyable. Come to think of it, TMNT games have generally been fun to play throughout history, I mean Turtles In Time is great! Regardless, for mobile games, this is a fun one to check out. Continue reading this post to see a trailer for the new game and learn how you can download it for your mobile device.

Best described as existential Mad Max, The Rover is coming to Blu-ray soon and certainly left an impression after I had initially seen it. Maybe I’ll have more to say when I check it out again. Here’s this: Fueled by engaging performances from Golden Globe® nominee Guy Pearce (Memento, L.A. Confidential) and what Variety calls “a career-redefining performance from Robert Pattinson” (The Twilight Saga franchise, Cosmopolis), The Rover arrives on Blu-ray™ Disc (plus Digital HD) and DVD (plus Digital) September 23 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The tension-filled film, which was released theatrically by A24, was an Official Selection of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. The Rover, directed by visionary writer/director David Michôd (Animal Kingdom), also stars Scoot McNairy (TV’s “Halt and Catch Fire,” upcoming Gone Girl). Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

It is fitting that many of the struggles surrounding Noah, a big-budget studio epic that retells the story of Biblical hero Noah and his giant ark, is based around men with power. This story of course deals with how power has basically corrupted man and Noah is tasked with assisting in helping the world start anew and while I would not suggest that needs to happen again (I am not too fond of endless floods), the fact that one of the men with the power over this film is acclaimed filmmaker Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Wrestler) makes things very interesting. The curiosity of those on the outside will either be how “religious” this film ends up seeming or whether or not it has more up its sleeve than being a slick update of a production fit for Cecil B. DeMille. One thing is certain: Noah is both unlike anything Aronofsky has attempted before and exactly the kind of film he would make, based on this story. Now the film has a technically fantastic Blu-ray to dig into.

Narrated by Katie Couric, FED UP blows the lid off everything we thought we knew about food and exercise, revealing a 30-year campaign by the food industry – aided by the U.S. government – to mislead and confuse the American public. Exposing the hidden truths contributing to one of the largest health epidemics in history, the film follows a group of families battling to lead healthier lives – and reveals why the conventional wisdom of “exercise and eat right” is not ringing true for millions of people struggling with diabetes, childhood obesity and other serious conditions. Including captivating interviews with the country’s leading experts, this vital information could change the way we eat forever. Continue reading ‘Food Doc FED UP Comes To Blu-ray Sept 9th!’

With an unchanged line-up stretching back to 1969 and global album sales in excess of 50 million, ZZ Top continue to delight fans around the world with brilliant live concerts and great music. The set list blends tracks from early seventies albums such as ‘Tres Hombre’ and ‘Fandango’ through their eighties blockbuster period with Eliminator and Afterburner and up to their most recent release and return to their blues roots with ‘La Futura’. The middle section of the concert features a jazz-blues tribute to the late Montreux Festival founder Claude Nobs with guest appearances by Mike Flanigin on Hammond Organ and Van Wilks on guitar.
