As August is getting closer, so are the batch of weirder summer movies headed our way, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. With Turtles, there has already been some mixed reaction to what we are getting, given the modern feel of it all and Michael Bay’s name being attached to it. That said, given that TMNT continues to be a presence on TV, kids will likely be happy to check out this new live-action film (which looks very kid friendly to me, as it should), let alone the adults who are happy to embrace nostalgia. Now we have a new trailer that provides a better idea of what is to come with this new movie, along with plenty of character posters. We’ll see how it turns out on August 8th, but continue on to see the new trailer and posters.

Sci-Fi deep sea cult classic LEVIATHAN is hitting Blu-ray in the “Summer Of Fear”, and you’re in luck because Scream Factory is taking the reigns. Its not getting the Collector’s Edition treatment, but rest assured this film is going to look better than ever and it does have itself some new interviews. LEVIATHAN is a movie that just scream awesome at me on paper. It has Robocop, Trautman, Winston, Jenny Summers, Marv the wet bandit…from the director of First Blood Part II, guys who wrote Blade Runner, Die Hard and The Fugitive, with effects from Stan Winston! Pretty cool. Below you’ll see the details for the release as well as the option to pre-order this sucker to have when it comes out! I dig Tony Jaa’s style quite a bit. I’m looking really forward to him joining in on Fast & Furious 7 when that drops next April. When I saw his breakout film Ong-Bak, I was pretty blown away by his furious Muay Thai style and many of the fresh action sequences that beheld before my own eyes. His follow up, The Protector, I wasn’t as fond of, but man did it have that one sequence going up that restaurant floor by floor, room to room in one take that just had my jaw drop. It was one of the best action sequences of the last decade. Jaa has returned to this film with a sequel that has been buzzing around VOD and will now hit Blu-ray on July 29. Below is all the information you’ll need as well as the pre-order button. I’m sure there’ll be at least one action sequence in the film worth the price of purchase! Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, Winter’s Tale is a story of miracles, crossed destinies and the age-old battle between good and evil. Peter Lake (Farrell) is a master thief who never expected to have his own heart stolen by the beautiful Beverly Penn (Brown Findlay). But their love is star-crossed: she burns with a deadly form of consumption, and Peter has been marked for a much more violent death by his one-time mentor, the demonic Pearly Soames (Crowe). Peter desperately tries to save his one true love, across time, against the forces of darkness, even as Pearly does everything in his power to take him down – winner take all and loser be damned. What Peter needs is a miracle, but only time will tell if he can find one. Continue reading ‘Winter’s Tale (Blu-ray Review)’

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a film not only packed with characters, sets, costumes, and all the things that tend to typify writer/director Wes Anderson’s style, it is also packed with story. It is becoming more and more clear to me how much Anderson enjoys having films that are about stories being told to an audience. There are frequent themes that have been present in Anderson’s other films, namely family, which is clearly seen in The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, Fantastic Mr. Fox and all of his other films as well, which is all well and good, but The Grand Budapest Hotel really goes out of its way to show us that it is a story within a story that is being told to another person. The result is a film that finds a way to present something that will be entirely familiar to everyone who recognizes Anderson’s style, but ends up feeling like a comment on storytelling itself. It is a combination of multiple genres in a rather go-for-broke fashion, with thoughtful regard for its key characters, and now the film is available in a great looking Blu-ray package.

I’m kind of bittersweet in regards to this one. On one hand I am looking forward to finally seeing this one after missing all the press screenings for it, but I know it’s going to make me very homesick. It seems like when I left Cleveland last year it all the sudden began thriving. Who knows? Maybe I have been the professional sports jinx for the city the past 39 years. All I know is Hollywood has tapped that town when the weather is at its most cooperative, most notably the summer months with productions such as the recent one Criminal Activities to really huge ones such as the last Captain America flick. Honestly, all I really care about is seeing my friends Robert Graziosi and Richard Hunter in here and maybe see what Garner is up to as well. I’m just joshing you! I’m really looking forward to finally seeing this. So if you’re interested, check out the full press release below from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Rob the Mob chronicles the lives of a real-life Bonnie and Clyde who made the bold move to rob and humiliate some of New York City’s most powerful mobsters. Fresh from prison for a small-time crime, reunited lovers Thomas (Pitt) and Rosie (Arianda) find themselves in need of cash. After hearing testimony from John Gotti’s high profile trial that mob social clubs are gun-free, Thomas and Rosie brazenly rob these underground spots operated by major crime families in the City. Unwittingly, they come across something much more valuable than money: a list of every mobster in the families. Now the feds, family members, and rival mobsters are on the hunt for the most notorious lovers since Romeo & Juliet.

Season three of The Killing begins one year after the close of the Rosie Larsen case (the focus of The Killing’s first two seasons), with Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) no longer working as a Seattle homicide detective. But when her ex-partner Stephen Holder’s (Joel Kinnaman) search for a runaway girl leads him to discover a gruesome string of murders that may connect to a previous murder investigated by Linden, she is drawn back into the life she thought she’d left behind. The new season also stars Peter Sarsgaard, Elias Koteas and Amy Seimetz. Continue reading ‘The Killing: The Complete Third Season (DVD Review)’

I’m sorry, but when it comes to some of the greatest action and martial arts movies of all time, my mind instantly drifts to one particular film in recent memory, The Raid: Redemption. You can say what you want about the weak story and the unrealistic punishment one man can take, but hot damn fudge on the end of Harry Potter’s wand was the fighting ever wild, crowd pleasing and over-the-top, intense when it needed to be. If you didn’t feel some of those blows from your viewing chair, then I’m sorry to inform you of the following diagnosis. You have no central nervous system. You are paralyzed. You might be dead. In my opinion, if The Raid: Redemption had one downfall, it would be that it shared similar DNA in its story with that of Dredd, which was released that same year. So when I learned of news that The Raid was actually part of a planned trilogy, I looked forward to seeing how The Raid 2 would try to emulate the success of the first one, but differentiate itself at the same time. I think you can say Gareth and team succeeded with pleasing me there, but let’s take closer look at things. After you… Continue reading ‘The Raid 2 (Blu-ray Review)’

Sometimes the strength of an ensemble can outweigh the bad ideas some have, as far as how to continue on with a film that had no real need to continue. That almost works here. 2012’s Think Like a Man was somewhat of a surprise hit, with Kevin Hart beginning to break out big, and a likable cast that many seemed to respond to. Now it has a sequel, with the word “Too” added to the end, which rarely bodes well for any movie. The cast returns, Hart’s role has been amped up, and some laughs are there, but the film feels too loose for its own good. Think Like a Man Too has all the energy, but wastes it on easy jokes about its Las Vegas setting, stepping away from anything more poignant.

I suppose it comes to no surprise that the soundtrack to Jersey Boys, the Tony Award-winning-jukebox musical-turned movie, is a good one. Bringing on many involved with the original show led to some solid vocal performances that really let the scenes featuring The Four Seasons and others show off their singing abilities. I only wish the rest of the film had the kind of spark that made me enjoy scenes of songs that I have heard plenty of times before being performed. It was nice to see director Clint Eastwood head in a different direction for the kind of film he wanted to make, but unfortunately his old school talents did not really assist bringing this old school group onto the big screen.

I did not get to see Joe in theaters due to it opening in only handful of cities and the one screening that was in my area was still quite a ways away. I had heard some rumblings about how good he film was and about how good Nicolas Cage was. I’m always glad when I can discover something new on Blu-ray. Joe is directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Your Highness), so it was a real surprise to see his name in the credits. It’s also really cool when directors transcend genres. Let us see how Joe stacked up on Blu-ray. Continue reading ‘Joe (Blu-ray Review)’

Today’s wishlist was actually one of my most anticipated to see titles in the summer of 2008, believe it or not. This cult classic comedy also was the start of one of today’s bigger comedy stars. I still don’t think a lot of people are familiar with it.

Maybe the most disappointing thing about this film is that it has nothing to do with The Rolling Stones. Gimme Shelter is actually a small scale drama, based on a true story that details a time in the life of a troubled, pregnant teenager, after she ran away from her abusive mother, in an effort to find a better life. The whole thing has the feel of a Lifetime movie, but because it has a slightly better cast and production values, it managed to make its way into theaters. Still, watching certain actors put on their drama face didn’t do a lot to make me appreciate this fairly by-the-numbers story.

Seeing as The Honeymooners was a show from the 50s, I was obviously not around when it first aired, but it is a show I hold in very high regard. I used to watch and laugh loudly at old reruns of The Honeymooners with my father, when I was very young, and the show has continued to hold up over time. This is a series that uses dialogue and great physical comedy to create classic comedy scenarios that have yet to feel dated. While the show is obviously from a certain time, I think it holds up due to its simplicity and the universal nature of the humor, which is why I was very happy to revisit it on this wonderful Blu-ray set.
