So going into this Blu-ray review of Under The Skin I knew the following four pieces of intelligence: Scarlett Johansson is an alien, she gets naked in this, the film’s a little out there with its wild imagery and my peers here at Why So Blu absolutely love it. Armed with that knowledge how bad can this really be? I was dying to find out because unfortunately in Austin, TX it only screened in two of the dumpiest theaters that reside in the area. I was not going to fork over my hard earned money to have my feet stick to the floor, not be able to see in case some Andre the Giant sat in front of me because of no stadium seating and watch it on a screen that’s barely any bigger than my HDTV at home and that has probably been around in age longer than I have. Are you picking up what I’m dropping here? I want my money’s worth. And that’s why I salaciously waited for this flick on Blu-ray. Was it worth the wait? Read on and find out. The only thing more complicated than the time traveling plotline of the original Planet of the Apes franchise is realizing that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the reimagining of the fourth film in the previous franchise, which took place before the first film, chronologically. Relieving the stress of such complications is the fact that ‘Dawn’ may be the 8th film in a long running series of ‘Apes’ movies, but it stands very close to the top, nearly outdoing the Charlton Heston classic. This is a summer movie that is not afraid to embrace the idea of keeping the damn dirty humans in second tier positions, while Andy Serkis, the other actors, and the fantastic visual effects team at Weta Digital do tremendous work at not only creating what appears to be living, breathing apes, but well-developed and empathetic characters. Along with a clever script and some ace direction, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is another very strong entry for the 2014 summer season, let alone a fine sci-fi spectacle.

If the year 2011 taught us nothing but the fact that good things can come from rebooting a beloved franchise, then I’d be alright to call it a day right then and there. Never in my wildest dreams could I have ever conjured up the belief or the cohones that the quirky Planet of the Apes franchise could ever be resurrected after that feeble attempt by Tim Burton (I really wish they could have went through with the Adam Rifkin script) way back in the summer of 2001 before our economy took a crap and I have been broke ever since because of low interest rates. However, I digress. We are not here to discuss our nation’s economy because if the fictional ape character of Caesar was real, I have no doubts that it would thrive once again under his direction. All hail Caesar, right? Exactly! That’s exactly the sentimentality I want you to have over the course of the next five minutes or so as I birth into your mind a world dominated by apes, or at least on the cusp of that becoming so in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I have to admit, I was a huge fan of Heavenly Sword back in the early Sony PlayStation 3 days when this game made its debut. The graphics and gameplay were simply amazing and till this day it’s still one of the games I managed to keep in my very small PS3 collection. But low and behold people…a deity is reborn in the fantasy film adaptation, which I heard so much about already, on Blu-ray September 2nd! I cannot be the only one excited for this title, can I? Well, if you don’t know what Heavenly Sword is all about, then I suggest you take this time to review the below press release and find out everything you need to know! It is only less than a month away. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is the hotly anticipated comic book space adventure, from director James Gunn, starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and Bradley Cooper & Vin Diesel as the voice of a talking raccoon and tree creature. Marvel thinks this is crazy enough to work and dammit if I (and movie geeks everywhere) are not at least curious as well. With that said, here is a special preview of the film just released by Marvel for everyone to take a look at. Continue on to check it out.

There seems to be a scale of how well movies can depict the passage of time with the characters we are following. We constantly see films that effectively (or ineffectively) make us of makeup and other effects to convey a certain age of a character, let alone simply using different actors, based on time jumps. Writer/director Richard Linklater has gone a different route. Rather than using traditional, physical tools to convey the lengthy period of time that Boyhood covers, he worked with the same actors for a 12 year period to deliver a unique and ambitious project. As a result, we see a story about family and change and growth and many other things that make up life from a personal perspective. It was a wonderful idea that has turned into an equally wonderful film.

We are a little over halfway through 2014 and with that, I figured it would be a good idea for Why So Blu’s writing staff to spread the word on which films they believe to be the best of the year so far (along with some picks for the worst). This article contains just that, as Brian, Brandon, and myself put down their thoughts on their three favorite films released theatrically this year. There were many films to choose from, so narrowing it down may not have been an easy task, but it was a fun process and a nice way to prepare for the second half of this year, which is also full of promise. Continue on and see which films came out on top! Continue reading ‘Why So Blu’s Staff Picks For 2014’s Best Films of the Year… So Far’

Michael King (Shane Johnson) doesn’t believe in God or The Devil. Following the sudden death of his wife, the documentary filmmaker decides to make his next film about the search for the existence of the supernatural. Michael decides to make himself the center of the experiment – allowing demonologists, necromancers, and various practitioners of the occult to try the deepest and darkest spells and rituals they can find on him – in the hopes that when they fail, he’ll once and for all have proof that religion, spiritualism, and the paranormal are nothing more than myth. But something does happen. An evil and horrifying force has taken over Michael King. And it will not let him go. Dale Dickey (IRON MAN 3), Tomas Arana (GLADIATOR), and Julie McNiven (Mad Men) co-star in this intense supernatural spine-tingler from the producers of WHITE NOISE and THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT.

The Toronto International Film Festival particpant, All Cheerleaders Die is coming to Blu-ray after its short, limited theatrical run this past June. A collective effort from Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertson, this horror-dark comedy feature is actually a remake of a super low budget film the duo made back in 2001. Of these two directorial names, one name interested me in the film and the other frightened me of it. Lucky McKee had made an indie horror film I really liked in 2002 called May. He also did a Masters Of Horror episode and a film I didn’t see but generated some buzz called The Woman. Chri Sivertson on the other hand, directed the abysmal Lindsay Lohan vehicle, I Know Who Killed Me. While the film is terrible it did contain one of my favorite all time bad movie lines, “Sometimes people get cut. That’s life”. Would good balance out evil here? Or was this going to be another I Know Who Killed Me. Continue reading ‘All Cheerleaders Die (Blu-ray Review)’

Steel yourself for another brutal battle, as one of the few survivors of the Great Siege of Rochester Castle fights to protect his family’s estate from fierce Celtic raiders. With a new battleground and a new enemy, IRONCLAD: BATTLE FOR BLOOD delivers the same ferocious, adrenaline-filled action that defined IRONCLAD. Tom Austen (“The Borgias”) and Michelle Fairley (“Game of Thrones”) star in this exciting new adventure from the director, writers and producers of the original IRONCLAD. Olive Films continues stocking its library with A-titles of Hollywood yesteryear with 1959’s Operation Petticoat. This comedy stars two of the era’s biggest male leads in Cary Grant and Tony Curtis. It also contains a few actors who would later find success in TV land in the years to come. While I may not be a fan of everything they’re putting out, Olive Films really should be commended for saving films of the era they are plucking Blu-ray releases from. As time marches on, these are the films that could be left in the dust and they are films that still have fans and a history. Its nice to be able to have something at your disposal as opposed to waiting and hoping it pops up again on Turner Classic Movies sometime in the near future. First of all: I love Sleepy Hollow, the breakout supernatural TV series that premiered on Fox last fall, and I would be remiss if I did not mention the fact that myself and fellow Why So Blu? writer Brandon Peters co-hosted a podcast devoted to the entire first season, along with our friend Maxwell Haddad (which can be found HERE). With that said, clearly Fox recognizes how big a hit this series was, as Sleepy Hollow: The Complete First Season is arriving on Blu-ray on September 16th and it is packed with special features. This is a series that puts a twist on the classic Washington Irving tale about Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman by turning it into an X-Files like procedural show, set in modern times. If you think that sounds ridiculous, you would be right, but it is also a very fun show, with surprisingly strong writing, given that the pilot episode features a headless horseman wielding an assault rifle. Read on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.
