Mark September 2nd Off as ‘Draft Day’ on Your Blu-ray Calendar!

Draft Day TNI’m kind of bittersweet in regards to this one.  On one hand I am looking forward to finally seeing this one after missing all the press screenings for it, but I know it’s going to make me very homesick.  It seems like when I left Cleveland last year it all the sudden began thriving.  Who knows?  Maybe I have been the professional sports jinx for the city the past 39 years.  All I know is Hollywood has tapped that town when the weather is at its most cooperative, most notably the summer months with productions such as the recent one Criminal Activities to really huge ones such as the last Captain America flick.  Honestly, all I really care about is seeing my friends Robert Graziosi and Richard Hunter in here and maybe see what Garner is up to as well.  I’m just joshing you!  I’m really looking forward to finally seeing this.  So if you’re interested, check out the full press release below from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The Raid 2 (Blu-ray Review)

I’m sorry, but when it comes to some of the greatest action and martial arts movies of all time, my mind instantly drifts to one particular film in recent memory, The Raid: Redemption.  You can say what you want about the weak story and the unrealistic punishment one man can take, but hot damn fudge on the end of Harry Potter’s wand was the fighting ever wild, crowd pleasing and over-the-top, intense when it needed to be.  If you didn’t feel some of those blows from your viewing chair, then I’m sorry to inform you of the following diagnosis.  You have no central nervous system.  You are paralyzed.  You might be dead.  In my opinion, if The Raid: Redemption had one downfall, it would be that it shared similar DNA in its story with that of Dredd, which was released that same year.  So when I learned of news that The Raid was actually part of a planned trilogy, I looked forward to seeing how The Raid 2 would try to emulate the success of the first one, but differentiate itself at the same time.  I think you can say Gareth and team succeeded with pleasing me there, but let’s take closer look at things.  After you… Continue reading ‘The Raid 2 (Blu-ray Review)’

‘Think Like A Man Too’ Vegas Baby (Movie Review)

think like a man too whysoblu thumbSometimes the strength of an ensemble can outweigh the bad ideas some have, as far as how to continue on with a film that had no real need to continue.  That almost works here.  2012’s Think Like a Man was somewhat of a surprise hit, with Kevin Hart beginning to break out big, and a likable cast that many seemed to respond to.  Now it has a sequel, with the word “Too” added to the end, which rarely bodes well for any movie.  The cast returns, Hart’s role has been amped up, and some laughs are there, but the film feels too loose for its own good.  Think Like a Man Too has all the energy, but wastes it on easy jokes about its Las Vegas setting, stepping away from anything more poignant.

‘Jersey Boys’ Try To Walk Like Men On The Big Screen (Movie Review)

jersey boys whysoblu thumbI suppose it comes to no surprise that the soundtrack to Jersey Boys, the Tony Award-winning-jukebox musical-turned movie, is a good one.  Bringing on many involved with the original show led to some solid vocal performances that really let the scenes featuring The Four Seasons and others show off their singing abilities.  I only wish the rest of the film had the kind of spark that made me enjoy scenes of songs that I have heard plenty of times before being performed.  It was nice to see director Clint Eastwood head in a different direction for the kind of film he wanted to make, but unfortunately his old school talents did not really assist bringing this old school group onto the big screen.

Joe (Blu-ray Review)

Joe - www.whysoblu.comI did not get to see Joe in theaters due to it opening in only handful of cities and the one screening that was in my area was still quite a ways away. I had heard some rumblings about how good he film was and about how good Nicolas Cage was. I’m always glad when I can discover something new on Blu-ray. Joe is directed by David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Your Highness), so it was a real surprise to see his name in the credits. It’s also really cool when directors transcend genres. Let us see how Joe stacked up on Blu-ray.   Continue reading ‘Joe (Blu-ray Review)’

Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist – June 20, 2014

Brandon's Blu-ray Wishlist THUMBToday’s wishlist was actually one of my most anticipated to see titles in the summer of 2008, believe it or not.  This cult classic comedy also was the start of one of today’s bigger comedy stars.  I still don’t think a lot of people are familiar with it.

Gimme Shelter (Blu-ray Review)

gimme shelter whysoblu thumbMaybe the most disappointing thing about this film is that it has nothing to do with The Rolling Stones.  Gimme Shelter is actually a small scale drama, based on a true story that details a time in the life of a troubled, pregnant teenager, after she ran away from her abusive mother, in an effort to find a better life.  The whole thing has the feel of a Lifetime movie, but because it has a slightly better cast and production values, it managed to make its way into theaters.  Still, watching certain actors put on their drama face didn’t do a lot to make me appreciate this fairly by-the-numbers story.

The Honeymooners: “Classic 39 Episodes” (Blu-ray Review)

the honeymooners whysoblu thumbSeeing as The Honeymooners was a show from the 50s, I was obviously not around when it first aired, but it is a show I hold in very high regard.  I used to watch and laugh loudly at old reruns of The Honeymooners with my father, when I was very young, and the show has continued to hold up over time.  This is a series that uses dialogue and great physical comedy to create classic comedy scenarios that have yet to feel dated.  While the show is obviously from a certain time, I think it holds up due to its simplicity and the universal nature of the humor, which is why I was very happy to revisit it on this wonderful Blu-ray set.

Mr Peabody & Sherman Travel to Blu-ray On October 14th!

Mr-Peabody-And-ShermanGrowing up, I was a big fan of the original Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon.  I think what attracted me a lot to the cartoon was how much I embraced serialized storytelling.  The original cartoon would often leave off on a cliffhanger at multiple points in an episode or at the tail end.  Even before there was a live action movie, when they started putting the old episodes on VHS in the late 80s there was a resurgence in its popularity even leading to CBS re-airing episodes on Friday nights one summer.  During the Rocky and Bullwinkle show there were other cartoons mixed in like Dudley Do-Right.  One of those cartoons was Mr. Peabody & Sherman (also, notable was Dudley Doo Right).  That cartoon was resurrected earlier this year in a hit live action cartoon which is now coming to glorious Blu-ray.  Below you can read all about this release! Set Your Sights on Horror as Oculus Arrives on Blu-ray this August

oculus whysoblu thumbI always love being excited by a new and original horror movie, which is what Oculus turned out to be.  I was happy to see the film this past April and did what I could to sing its praises, as it was clever, scary, and well worth the time of those looking for some thrills (Review HERE).  The idea of a movie about a brother and sister versus a killer mirror has a level of dark humor/ridiculousness to it, but it actually worked, which is great for audiences that wanted something new.  Now Oculus is headed to Blu-ray and DVD.  The film arrives on August 5th and is packed with special features.  Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

300: Rise of an Empire (Blu-ray Review)

It’s been way too long between the amount of time that has passed since 2007 when Warner Bros. brought Roman soldiers with unbelievably chiseled pecs and abs into our living rooms on our early adoption HDTV sets during the Red vs. Blu Wars (HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray).  Can you believe it has been that long and for that matter has taken this long to get a sequel out to the fans of the wildly insane, testosterone driven 300?  I still remember my first theatrical viewing of that feature.  It was quite a visual spectacle to behold and take in.  It was like the raw pages of Frank Miller’s graphic novel of the same name just magically came to life on the big screen.  Were those chiseled bodies real or CG?  Hell no!  Gerald Butler and the rest of the gang went through some rigorous training to achieve those astonishing physiques.  Now it wasn’t all about the awe, shock and gratuitous violence/sex, it was actually a quite entertaining and solid movie that took us on an incredible journey and did not let go of us leaving us thirsty for even more blood and vengeance by the time the credits rolled.  After all, our king, as mighty as he was, had fallen.   Vengeance was an instant mandate.  And now the time is upon us!  Ladies and gentlemen…I proudly introduce to you 300: Rise of an Empire on Blu-ray. ‘Ping Pong Summer’ Bounces On Blu-ray This Summer

Ping Pong SummerAlthough we kind of fell out of touch a few years back, I still consider him my dear friend in the movie business who I strive and emulate to be one day and of course look up to.  The man I’m talking about is the man of the hour here, Marcus Dean Fuller.  You may know him from my interview with him here and review of his phenomenal debut feature over here.  Well the man is back in the producer’s chair this time!  Maybe next time he’ll pick one of my scripts (and I’ll keep trying), but for now I am eager as hell to check out Ping Pong Summer.  It’ has gotten some rave reviews and unfortunately I was not able to break away from work to check it out during SXSW or else I would have seen it already.  With all the big names in the is one and erring on the side of caution (knowing the quality Marcus gets behind), I already have no doubts that this is a bonafide winner!  But oh yeah!  I almost forgot.  This is coming to Blu-ray in August!  Find out more below!
