Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom (Blu-ray Review)

mandela whysoblu cover-001It is always very difficult to put together a biopic based on the story of individuals who were able to accomplish so much and live such large lives.  Steven Spielberg figured out a way to do it with his take on Abraham Lincoln, in Lincoln, as he focused on a very specific time frame.  Clint Eastwood attempted to handle the story of Nelson Mandela by also focusing on a specific time in his life, basing Invictus around the 1995 world cup, which followed the dismantling of Apartheid.  Unfortunately that film felt like it was holding back, regardless of how spot on Morgan Freeman may have been.  There have been other portrayals of Mandela as well, but now we have one that focuses on pretty much his entire life, up to becoming President of South Africa.  Read on to hear my thoughts on the results as well as what to take away from this Blu-ray package.

In Fear (Blu-ray Review)

In FearYou may have heard about In Fear just a tad if you’ve been a loyal Why So Blu? reader.  It’s a unique take on the home invasion subgenre of horror, that was a pretty big hit over at Sundance.  Anchor Bay has been pretty excited to be the home distributor for the film and has been pumping the hype machine for quite some time.  Now, its finally here and we can see what all this hub bub is about.  I liked what I was reading from the early pressers, so I wanted to go in blind as possible.  I know I had been posting clip after clip, but I had no idea what I was posting as I didn’t want a single bit of it spoiled for me upon my viewing.  So now we get to the nitty gritty and I finally get to share with you my experience with In Fear.  Did it hold up or live up to its hype?  Read on to see if how I went with this motorized tale of terror. Easy Money: Hard To Kill AKA Snabba Cash II (Blu-ray Review)

Easy-Money-Hard-To-KillIn 2010, Easy Money or Snabba Cash released and became a pretty solid success.  It got the attention of people for actor Joel Kinnaman, who had a terrific attention-getting performance of ‘JW’ in the first film.  JW was a college kid who was taxi driving/drug dealing his way through school while schmoozing rich kids to try and be accepting by doing their papers and homework.  The film was filled with suspense, some crazy intensity and plenty of doublecross.  It had some wonderfully realized characters and focused on 3 very different characters that you both loved and couldn’t trust the whole time.  It took some surprising turns and always kept you at attention.  So, it was with great pleasure to see what they did to continue this series as its now become a trilogy.  Today we check out the second installment, Easy Money: Hard To Kill or the much more fun to say title – Snabba Cash II. ‘Out of the Furnace’ Blu-ray Giveaway!!!

Out of the Furnace TNNow here’s a flick thai I am personally salivating to see having missed it in the theaters.  It’s a tale from Scott Cooper, the critically acclaimed writer and director of Crazy Heart, complete with a gripping and powerful drama about family, fate, circumstance and justice.  Who doesn’t love a tale like that?  It goes a little something like this.  Russell Baze (Christian Bale) leads a dead-end life – he works a meaningless steel mill job all day, and cares for his terminally ill father at night.  When Russell’s brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from Iraq, he is lured into one of the Northeast’s most ruthless crime rings and mysteriously disappears.  When the police fail to solve the case, Russell puts his life at risk in order to seek justice for his brother.  The film features an all-star cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana and Sam Shepard.  Read on below for more information about this March 11th Blu-ray release and how you can win a Blu-ray of your own courtesy of Fox. 12 Years A Slave (Blu-ray Review)

12 years12 Years A Slave is a truly gripping story that most certainly serves as an unflinching look at a horrible period of a man’s life, within a time period where injustice against man may have been at its peak in America, but does so with a mood that seems to distinguish itself from other period dramas.  It may have to do with the filmmakers behind this feature, the emotional rawness of the performances, or other factors, but the film sets a high-water mark for torturous odysseys portrayed on film, such as this, set during an awful time like slavery.  Now the Academy Award winner for Best Picture is available on Blu-ray for all to experience.

Prepare Thyself for KNIGHTS OF BADASSDOM This April

knights of badassdom whysoblu cover-001Knights of Badassdom has all the makings of a fun cult comedy.  I have heard of issues with this film in regards to behind-the-scenes tinkering, but my curiosity remains.  I missed out on the limited release of this film, so the upcoming Blu-ray release will finally be my way into checking out this film revolving around a game of medieval role-playing, with a dark and fantastical twist.  The fact that this cast includes True Blood‘s Ryan Kwanten, Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage, Firefly‘s Summer Glau, Steve Zahn, and others suggests that it should at least be mildly entertaining.  Regardless, myself and others will be able to find out on April 1st.  Read on to learn more about this upcoming release.

‘Ray Donovan’ Is Coming Home To Blu-ray In June

Ray DonovanIn an early announcement to retailers today, Showtime Networks, CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution have made known the June 10th Blu-ray and DVD release date for the first season of the powerful family drama Ray Donovan.  For those of you that do not know, Ray Donovan (Live Schreiber) is the go-to guy who makes the problems of Los Angeles celebrities, superstar athletes and business moguls disappear.  However, this drama truly unfolds and opens up when Ray’s father (Jon Voight) is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core.  I have only seen the first half of the season before Showtime was yanked last summer for TWC customers, but from what I saw it had me wanting more and I can’t wait to finish this one up in June..on Blu-ray! Frozen – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

FrozenDisney animation made a sweeping return to form and comeback in 2013 with Frozen.  The film is now the winner of 2 Academy Awards, including Best Animated Feature (the other for Best Original Song for “Let It Go”).  Not only did the film receive high praise and reviews from critics, but it was a sensation globally.  Just last weekend the film crossed the 1 billion dollar mark at the global box office (and the film still hasn’t opened in Japan yet).  That leaves only Toy Story 3 ahead of it in terms of animated films all time box office (without adjusting for inflation), making it then the highest grossing animated non sequel of all time.  So yeah, this movie was pretty huge.  And I’m pretty honored to be covering it for Why So Blu? today! The Grand Budapest Hotel Cast & Crew Interviews: Tony Revolori

The Grand Budapest Hotel whysoblu 12-001The Grand Budapest Hotel is the latest film from writer/director Wes Anderson.  The film recounts the adventures of Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel; and Zero Mustafa (Tony Revolori), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.  The story involves a caper, a prison break, battles over family fortunes, cross-country chases, and a love affair.  It is a wild, yet delightful film (review HERE) and I had the pleasure of interviewing some of the cast and crew from the film.  The following post contains a roundtable recap of our discussion with star Tony Revolori.
