Disney’s 2013 Oscar hopeful, Saving Mr. Banks has come to Blu-ray. Boasting stellar performances by Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, it stunned many when all it got nominated for was Best Original Score (Thomas Newman). No matter, the film received plenty of other award recognition with some wins and was a rousing success at the box office, raking in over $112 million for just a $35 million budget. It tells the story of a time during a golden age for the Mouse House, and the struggle with the creative process on developing one of the all time classics, Mary Poppins. So, take your spoon full of sugar and grab your kite as we take to the sky and chim chiminy chim chim review this Blu-ray. What? I’m in the spirit! Here is the second trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past. Given how quiet marketing has been, as far as revealing plot details regarding one of the best story lines in the X-Men comics goes, this new trailer will surely satisfy those on board with the popular mutant franchise, as it has plenty to offer as far as juicy new footage, fitting of an action/superhero blockbuster. A new poster has been released as well, once again suggesting that (aside from The Wolverine) Fox has no idea how to make a great X-Men movie poster. This one is not terrible, but it’s still pretty blah. Take a look for yourself at both the new trailer and the new poster by continuing on in this post.

American Hustle, more recently famous for being nominated for a whopping 10 Oscars, and winning none. Is that indicative of it not being a good movie? Absolutely not and we will squash those rumors down with our DVD review. American Hustle stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Jeremy Renner. It’s the story of the ultimate con and the conmen who weave its magic all using the backdrop of the 1970’s. David O. Russell who also directed The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook in recent years directed American Hustle. Have yourself a sit down, grab an ice-cold beverage, and take a trip back in time with American Hustle. Hide your wallet. Continue reading ‘American Hustle (DVD Review)’

I’m going to go on record right from the beginning here and admit that this won’t be the most prolific of game reviews covering PlayStation 4’s newly released inFAMOUS: Second Son, but it’s better than having no coverage at all like some sites that profess to having gaming reviews, right? Such grandeur efforts of game reviews are far better off left for our resident experts like Aaron Neuwirth or Gregg Senko, whom I hope to see back here representing one day soon. But for now, you’re just going to have to accept this quick review as the authority around here. And if not for the encouragement of Aaron Neuwirth on how good he believed this game was going to be, I honestly would not be sitting here writing this as I initially had no plans to play this one. Thankfully, I’m glad Aaron’s plug and affinity over this franchise persuaded me to give it a try. Continue reading ’48 Hours with PlayStation 4’s ‘inFAMOUS: Second Son’ (Game Review)’

Millennium Entertainment is bringing you the Blu-ray release of Buck Wild. This zombie comedy was actually made all the way back in 2011, but is just now making its way to home video. It made its big debut at the Dallas International Film Festival last year in April. It then later took home the “Best Of The Fest” award at the Hill Country Film Festival the following month. This film melds the genres of zombies and scary redneck hillbillies together in hopes of a great comedic romp. The film was directed by Tyler Glodt.

This doesn’t make up for Oldboy, but alas someone is finally digging into Spike Lee’s back catalog of films. And, funny enough, I now need to write a new piece for next week’s ‘Wishlist’ article as it was going to be for The 25th Hour which now sees a release date of June 10! It also includes a film I liked back when I saw it (but haven’t seen since the 90s) Summer Of Sam. Probably the highest profile of this release to many will be He Got Game. All the films feature a newly recorded commentary track. Maybe Jungle Fever is down the pipeline sometime soon? Its still not clear whether these will be 2-disc sets or share a disc. If they’re using BD-50s (which I would be shocked if they weren’t), then its really no big deal. No pre-order is available yet, but scroll down for the first official announcement and specs! I love Muppets. 2011 gave me a big bowl of smiles in the form of The Muppets; seemingly a return of the classic characters to the big screen in the form of what could have been an emotional farewell to them. It happened to also be a hysterical (and Oscar-winning) comedy suitable for everyone, but it definitely wanted to deliver on sentiment as well. Muppets Most Wanted is more “business as usual” as far as Muppets movies go, as it does much less work from an emotional standpoint, with focus placed well into the madcap adventure category this go around. As a result, the film feels less significant (which it is happy to point out from the outset), but it is still a chance to have a whole lot of fun with the Muppets, which I have no problem doing.

I really did not know what to expect with this one having not seen anything Muppets on television or in the movies since my childhood. I’m not entirely sure why I went that long with a Muppet-like drought, but nevertheless I did. However, much to my surprise, Muppets Most Wanted was like a family reunion for me. You know how you can let years past and not see extended family, but just pick things right up like nothing ever happened upon reunion? Well, it’s simply like that. It felt good! As Muppets Most Wanted unfolded on the screen, I remembered all those characters like a book unravelling one is reading for the second time. Talk about a blast from the past! You can add wrinkles to my face, pepper my hair gray and pile me under tons of non-fun adult debt, but you can’t take away that geeky kid in me no matter how hard you try (the PlayStation 4 is evidence of that). And best of all, Muppets Most Wanted, like the television show of my childhood, scores lots and lots of superstar cameos. I like that! So come on! Let’s cut Animal loose from his chains and get this party started! Continue reading ‘‘Muppets Most Wanted’ Proves A Worthy “Sequel” (Movie Review)’

Divergent is the first sci-fi/action/coming-of-age film adapted from a young adult novel to be released this year. For those keeping track, we still have The Giver, The Maze Runner, and The Hunger Games: Mocking Jay – Part 1 to look forward to in 2014. I say this because these types of films have formed their own sub-genre at this point, akin to the big-budget superhero films of recent years. Not all of these book-to-film adaptations have been super successful in the way Marvel and DC superhero films have (but you should check out Beautiful Creatures, because it is solid), but some of these tend to still feel like the next big thing. I am not sure what future lies ahead of Divergent and the other potential films adapted from Veronica Roth’s book series, but this first film seems to at least be satisfying for fans of the book who will see it no matter what and could be enjoyable for those who are not tired of this sub-genre or are diving into it for the first time.

Just in time for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, here we have an animated Avengers adventure coming right at our Blu-ray players. What’s funny is that this is being put out by Sony. So, while they are targeting this release to closely coincide with The Winter Soldier, you’ll find no trailer or other promotional material for the upcoming Marvel film anywhere on this disc (Captain America doesn’t even show up in this film, but Black Widow and Nick Fury who are also in The Winter Soldier are here). Staying in tune with all the more adult-aimed Marvel animations that have appeared on networks like the now defunct G4, this is done Anime-style.
