Going into this screening last night I was fearful of only one thing. Please God! Don’t let this be a horrible remake like 2012’s Total Recall. Despite the beauty of Kate Beckinsale in it, life is too precious and short for something of that immeasurable quality. So here we are and there’s really no way around it. The twelfth of February 2014 is happening whether we like it or not. We are living in it and because we are we have a modern day PG-13 remake of the 1987 hard-R Robocop to discuss here. And guess what? It’s only been off and on and delayed since it was announced way back in 2005. How bad can this really be? Sometimes, as we seen last year with World War Z, not all delays are bad. Let’s give it the benefit of the doubt at least. So as the poster tagline for Robocop reads, “Crime Has A New Enemy,” I’m hoping by the crime they are talking about 2012’s Total Recall being made and that this film is the enemy attempting to kick its a$$! Come on! You have to be a little curious, don’t you? Read on! Continue reading ‘Good Cop, Bad Cop(s), Robocop (Movie Review)’

More clips today, folks. This time its from the upcoming film IN FEAR from Anchor Bay. It’s been getting a lot of buzz leading up to its small theatrical run and Blu-ray debut coming in March (the 7th and 11th to be precise). It stars Alice Englert who I enjoyed a lot in Beautiful Creatures last year and Iain De Caestecker most know for Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. which I, like I’m sure many others, am still torturing myself with and at this point I really don’t know why. It’s directed by Jeremy Lovering, who appears to have made his career in directing a lot of BBC stuff. I’m pretty excited for this one, so let’s take a look at this clip sent to us from our wonderful friends over at Anchor Bay/Starz! DreamWorks Pictures’ “Need for Speed” marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes — one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, “Need for Speed” captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting, while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless. I generally save the trailer posts for more high profile films, but Under The Skin seems very intriguing to me. The film first caught my attention during its run at various film festivals last year, where I kept hearing about the film and its lead performance from Scarlett Johansson. Some comparisons to Kubrick were being made with this latest film from Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Birth), which is a bit strong, but certainly gets my attention. Regardless, there is now a new trailer and poster available to view and it continues to make me excited to see the film. Continue on to view the trailer.

Only six weeks left! Over two seasons, this series has taken cringe-worthy jokes and biting satire to a whole new level. Winner of two 2013 Emmy awards for stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale,VEEP: The Complete Second Season comes to Blu-ray with Digital Copy, DVD and Digital HD on March 25, 2014 — just weeks before the third season premiere on April 6th — packed with laughs at the expense of Vice President Selina Meyer (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her motley crew of political misfits. Adding to the laughs are an array of deleted scenes and cast/crew commentaries that somehow make “one of the funniest shows on television” (The Wrap) even more enjoyable. If you cannot tell, as a childhood fan of action movie icon Jean-Claude Van Damme, I’m pumped about the announcement of Enemies Closer, which will be arriving on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD UltraViolet), DVD (plus Digital Ultraviolet) and Digital HD March 11th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. I saw this movie’s trailer on iTunes trailers weeks ago and immediately texted my fellow reviewers about it. Needless to say, we are all kinds of curious about this feature. So armed with that information, why don’t I let Lionsgate do the rest of the talking below. What do you say? Hell yeah! I knew it. Check it out below! This is one of those situations where I’m “easy”. Dolph Lundgren Vs. Zombies. Sure! Dolph Lundgren Vs. Zombies AND ROBOTS! Sign me up now! Battle Of The Damned promised me just that. And going in, that’s what I really expect and no more. Give me the vintage Dolph Lundgren goofy goods. Give me the gore vicious Zombie treats. Now, lets blend them. I’m not going to lie to you, when I first saw the trailer for this one I got pretty excited. I put on my “need to see” list, believe it or not. With such little aspirations, it would seem hard for this film to fail. But, Battle Of The Damned manages to make some choices behind the camera that doesn’t do it any favors on the viewers eyes and processing of the film. The story is just fine, it’s the way its told that does the disservice. Keep on reading and I’ll explain myself further. Continue reading ‘Battle Of The Damned (Blu-ray Review)’

CJ Entertainment imports another South Korean film to the United States. This time its Fists Of Legend. While its not even relatively close in subject matter, using the vice of reality television to tell this story reminded me that of Slumdog Millionaire. But, anyway, this film is one that showcases the popular fighting of MMA as a centerpiece to this story of longtime friends with a troubled history reunited after many years of being estranged. The film features some well directed action pieces and a great set of characters that will have you the viewer well invested fight-by-fight antsy to see who will win as if it was an actual match. I was quite surprised at not only the quality of the film, but how much I was into it. Continue reading ‘Fists Of Legend (Blu-ray Review)’

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN FOREVER, the music of “Frozen” was celebrated with live performances at Los Angeles’ Vibrato Grill Jazz club last night. Kristen Bell (voice of Anna), Idina Menzel (voice of Elsa), Josh Gad (voice of Olaf) and Santino Fontana (voice of Hans) took the stage, accompanied by a live orchestra conducted by David Metzger, to perform songs from the Oscar®-nominated, Golden Globe®-winning film, including the Oscar-nominated “Let It Go.” The packed house included songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, composer Christophe Beck, directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, producer Peter Del Vecho and executive producer John Lasseter, in addition to a host of celebrity guests. In theaters since Nov. 27, 2013, “Frozen” has earned more than $900 million worldwide. The “Frozen” soundtrack has held the No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 chart for four non-consecutive weeks, and is the longest-running No. 1 film soundtrack since 2003. Vampire Academy seems like it could have been a fun mix of meta-humor surrounding the recent wave of vampire and young adult novel themed-culture and satire dealing with high school drama. Unfortunately, this new film based on a young adult, paranormal romance book series (which I assume is a best-seller, because they all seem to be, regardless of whether you had ever heard of them before), has very little to offer in terms of wittiness, craftiness, or shrewdness. The film provides merely one character that has any life to bring to the film, two actors on the adult side to try and ham it up, and a ton of exposition that makes you feel like Vampire Academy will be providing you with a Scantron for the exam that takes place once the film ends. I can say right now, I didn’t take many notes.

In this unforgettable assault on reality–fully restored and presented completely uncut theatrically for the first time ever in the U.S.–legendary Hollywood director/actor John Huston (The Maltese Falcon; Treasure of the Sierra Madre) stars as an intergalactic warrior who joins a cosmic Christ figure in battle against a demonic 8-year-old girl and her pet hawk, while the fate of the universe hangs in the balance. Multi-dimensional warfare, pre-adolescent profanity and brutal avian attacks combine to transport the viewer to a stat unlike anything they’ve experienced… somewhere between Hell, the darkest reaches of outer space, and Atlanta, GA. THE VISITOR fearlessly fuses elements of The Omen, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Birds, Rosemary’s Baby, The Fury, and even Star Wars, creating the most ambitious of all ’70s psychedelic mindwarps. Its baffling all-star cast includes Shelley Winters (Night of the Hunter), Glenn Ford (Superman), Lance Henriksen (Aliens), Franco Nero (Django) and Sam Peckinpah (director of The Wild Bunch). It was a bit humorous that the party celebrating the upcoming release of the FX series, The Americans, was occurring on the same day as the start of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. For those unfamiliar, The Americans is a series revolving around undercover Russian spies in 1980s Washington D.C. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys star as a seemingly normal, suburban couple, who are actually lethal KGB agents. The first season revolves around these two working together to continue their mission, while staying hidden as spies in plain sight. It also takes a lot of time to expand on the lives these two have shared, making the audience root for these two to keep this fake, but not necessarily non-emotional, marriage alive. I very much enjoyed the first season and was happy to enjoy the festivities celebrating the upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release. This post details the event as well as the conversation I was a part of, with the producers of the series, who were very happy to talk about it.

We have given away some pretty big Blu-ray prizes here on the site over the years, but nothing compares in my opinion to what’s up for grabs in today’s BIG announcement. When I think of America, pride in my country and the ability to rise up against all odds and become the greatest you possibly can be in the face of utter adversity, nothing cinematically is more synonymous in my mind than the Rocky movie franchise. I’m not sure how you feel about that opinion of mine, but I’m hoping some of you at least share in my sentiments and are PUMPED about this Blu-ray giveaway our friends at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are making possible here for one lucky reader of Why So Blu! You ready to learn more? Follow me and let’s step into the ring! Ding! Ding! Continue reading ‘‘Rocky Heavyweight Collection’ Blu-ray Giveaway Contest!’
