Let’s face it. Escape Plan is the tag team hardcore action moviegoers of my generation have been dying to see happen on the big screen ever since the big guns of the 80’s. With the exception of Arnold’s brief scenes in The Expendables series, Escape Plan truly marks the first time Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have starred together in the same film. I don’t know how you feel about it, but that’s one massive production in my opinion with both of those hulking names thrown together in the same ring. So nevertheless, since I missed the press screening last year, I have been drooling with anticipation and anxiously awaiting for this “action” flick to come out on the Blu-ray format, like a dog waiting for its master to come home from a hard day of work, just to get a first hand look at their onscreen chemistry together, outside of The Expendables franchise. Now the real question is whether or not I was disappointed in it? I’ll get to that more in a few minutes, but for now let’s talk about everything Escape Plan. You down with that? Well, this is exciting if you’re a Troma fan. I tend to be, but a lot of the time I have to be in the right prepared mindset for a night of Troma goodness. I’ve seen the original Class Of Nuke ‘Em High and rather liked it. I even made a zombie short film in high school that referenced that title called Class Of Zombie High. Oddly, as much as I did enjoy the first one, I never made my way to see the sequel. Well, if I’m to be reviewing this one, I’m gonna have to brush up and finally visit this one. Return To Nuke ‘Em High, Vol. 1 marks the return to the director’s chair for Troma head honcho Lloyd Kaufman. I hope he’s not too rusty and can deliver some of the extra campy, super goofy goodness that rocked the straight-to-video market back in the hayday of Ma and Pa VHS rental stores. The film makes its Blu-ray debut (in a groovy green case and stellar poster art) on March 18. Below, Anchor Bay and Troma deliver you the dirty deets as well as a pre-order link. Here we go again. Brandon with the zombies. This one is a comedy actually touting the term “Zom-Com” in its promo materials. Zombies apparently come from the Chupacabra in this tale. Millennium is selling this as a buddy comedy with zombies thrown into the mix. Let’s just hope either the comedy or zombie kills work in this or I could be in for a brutal experience. The cast in the film has a bunch of people whose names don’t strike me as familiar, but I’m very familiar with a lot of the shows and movies they’ve been apart of. So I’m sure it’ll be an “oh yeah, that guy” type experience when we get introduced in this film. Buck Wild comes out on glorious Blu-ray on March 18, so get your pre-order guns ready and pull the trigger. Below the studio provides you with all the pertinent details as well as a plot summary! I can’t tell you how excited I am about this early retail announcement that just dropped in my mailbox courtesy of our Magnolia Home Entertainment PR person. Thank you! The reason for my excitement is because of the fact that my girlfriend has been asking to see this one ever since she saw the trailer for it on iTunes last year. For some reason or another we kept putting off watching this film, but that will all be forgotten history come this March as Magnolia has announced a March 4th Blu-ray release date for Last Day on Mars. Check out the full press release below for more information on this release! Continue reading ‘‘Last Day on Mars’ Lands on Blu-ray This March!’

There is a lot of anticipation building for Maleficent, the live-action take on the Sleeping Beauty story, told from the perspective of it’s infamous villain. I have liked what I have seen so far and now there is a new trailer, with a nice addition that seems quite fitting for the vibe of the film. Here’s what Disney had to say: A never-before-heard Lana Del Rey rendition of “Once Upon a Dream” was unveiled as part of a 90-second sneak peek of Disney’s Maleficent during the 56th Annual Grammy Awards® on Sunday, January 26. Maleficent releases in U.S. theaters on May 30, 2014. Continue on to check out this sneak peak learn how to download the song.

When I was growing up, Ouija boards were a terrifying thing. It wasn’t like today. More and more people believed in just not messing with them as they were tools of witchcraft and made people uneasy just seeing them. Originally titled “Ouija”, Witchboard was the horror film that came along and played on all of those fears. It’s a film that when I saw it as a kid just kind of confirmed with me not to ever f*%$ with one of the boards. It was that kind of supernatural element that got under your skin with just a thought even well after the film’s credits have rolled. Yes, The Exorcist had used the board as a factor in the film, but Kevin Tenney’s film wanted to make the board an entire focus on its horror and not just and one and done kind of thing. Oh and did I mention that Witchboard also stars 80s super hottie and co-star(along with Dave Coulier) of America’s Funniest People Tawny Kitaen! Continue reading ‘Witchboard (Blu-ray Review)’

One of the best things about The Past, writer/director Asghar Farhadi’s follow up film to 2011’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film, A Separation, is that it makes me want to see all of Farhadi’s previous films. Once again working with a fairly straight-forward, reality-based premise as the subject for a drama, Farhadi is certainly proving to be one of the best voices in film, when it comes to examining familial relationships. What makes this impressive is how gripping I have found his films to be, despite being incredibly limited as far as any sort of flashiness is concerned. With The Past, there are no broad characters, the film has almost no music or score whatsoever, and the film’s stakes are entirely personal to the specific people involved. Still, The Past was another standout from 2013, as it is so great at being the film it is trying to be.

Wow! I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally get the official word that Hunger Games: Catching Fire is just around the corner on the Blu-ray format with a release date of March 7th! I can’t even recount all the times I tried to catch this one theatrically after missing the press screening in my area of this feature. Now I can just sit back and relax because the month of March will be here rather soon and I for one can’t wait. These cold temperatures suck! LOL. So without further ado, I’m pleased to share with all our readers here the official press release below of this Blu-ray release courtesy of one of my favorite studios, Lionsgate. Make sure you pre-order this title over here too so it’s waiting on your porch when you get home from work on March 7th. Enjoy! Universal’s Machete Kills represents everything that’s wrong with Hollywood, sexploitation, extreme gore, bad dialogue, ridiculous plot and action sequences…you name it. But why do I love it so much?! Because it’s so much God d@mn fun if you let it be! That’s why! If you can’t let go and have a fun time with a Machete flick, then you’re a corpse! Loosen up. Let go of everything that makes sense in life. It’s perfectly acceptable to rip someone’s intestines out, jump out the window with them in tow and swing from them to the below building floor. Totally realistic! Right? Wrong! But who the hell cares?! This is Machete and this is the Austin’s prodigal son, Señor Robert Rodriguez writing and directing these flicks. If you can’t respect that harmonious blend, then I have no reason to deal with you anymore. Move along. I’m sure there’s a Muppets review or two here on the site for you to look at. On the surface, after seeing multiple television spots initially, Last Vegas appeared to be nothing more than a cash grab at the box office as the older generation’s version of the wildly popular first entry in the franchise, The Hangover. Heck, it’s even about four friends and a bachelor party in Vegas! How much more convincing can that as an initial assessment possibly be? And guess what?! The movie poster’s tagline even read that “it’s going to be legendary.” I got to be honest with you. I feel like I hit a grand slam here with my initial way of thinking. The Hangover involved four guys, Las Vegas, a bachelor party and it was…L-E-G-E-N-D-A-R-Y. However, I digress and won’t throw anymore jabs. We’re always taught in life not to judge a book by it’s cover so instead of speculating and trading zingy one-liners, let’s roll the dice and find out how Last Vegas is! After reviewing fun the horror-comedies Big Ass Spider! and Bad Milo, it seemed like I was on a pretty good streak as far as this genre was concerned. I really wish I could have liked Hell Baby more. Some of the creators of The State and Reno 911 have gotten together to make a horror comedy about demonic possession in the vein of films like Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen, among others. At its best the film plays as its own entry in the horror-comedy genre, rather than a goofy parody film, but at its worst, the film leans to heavily on jokes that may have played better in a script and on set than they eventually did in theatrical form. Hell Baby features plenty of comedic actors that I enjoy, but the film just does not nail the laughs as consistently as one would hope.

For those who enjoy a fun horror comedy or have ever wondered what a sillier take on a David Cronenberg body horror film would be like, Bad Milo has you covered. The film is easily described as the one where Ken Marino has a butt gremlin and there is not much to argue against with that statement. Still, given the cast involved, the way the humor is handled, and the use of a real puppet to represent said butt gremlin, Bad Milo has cult favorite written all over it. Is the film worthy of such a status? Perhaps, but it is now available for all viewers to find out on a pretty decent Blu-ray. Time to dive in and learn more.

Scream Factory doesn’t release a whole lot of modern horror films, they pride themselves on being “Rated R for Retro”. So, when they do pick up and distribute something new, it gets my attention. Last year they released Dead Souls, Cockneys Vs Zombies and the anthology Chilling Visions: 5 Senses Of Fear. Their first new movie for 2014 will be Larry Fessenden’s Beneath. This looks to be a giant fish kills debaucherous teens type movie. While it may sound throwaway to some, I’ve heard a lot of good things about this film from very credible people in the horror field (writers, critics). So, I’ve had this one kind of on the radar. Scream Factory will be giving it its home video debut and supplying it with some extras on March 25th. As always, if you’re interested you can click the Amazon link below and support your fellow Why So Blu writer by pre-ordering. After the jump, Scream Factory provides you with all the specifics and nitty gritty details of their release of Beneath.
