I remember when this film first came out. I never heard of it until a few months before it’s release date. I thought that was odd. Then a star’s name in the billing credits caught my eye and that’s all it took. I didn’t care anymore as to how this film managed to sneak under my radar. Hook…line…and sinker! Yeah, baby! That’s right! Gemma’s in the house again and it’s time to get this party started! So needless to say when I received the press invite to this one, there wasn’t even a second of hesitation. Anything lingering on my calendar, as far as I am concerned, could wait. Gemma needs my love and support. This movie can suck for all I care, but as long as Gemma looks good in it, you already had my money…if I was a paying customer. But let’s talk about that. Is Gemma Arterton and her newest flick worth the price of admission now that it’s out on Blu-ray and DVD? And oh yeah…did I mention Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake also star in this one too? I guess you can say there’s a star in this for every one. So let’s take a closer look and see if you’ll be prone to “run” away from Runner Runner or stick around and play. Shoes all laced up? Good! Let’s hit the ground running… Continue reading ‘Runner Runner (Blu-ray Review)’

Devotion can be a tricky thing. Lone Survivor is ostensibly an action film, but because of its source material and the man who lived the experience, the effort that went into making this film seems to have been heavily concentrated on making it have the feel of an “important” story, just as much as a technically proficient action experience. This is not anything new, but it can have an effect on how impactful a film may be, depending on how strident a film may be in wanting to tell a certain kind of story. Lone Survivor gets points for depicting a level of intensity not often found in anything other than action-heavy war films, but it is because of how devoted it wants to be to the true story by way of brutality and how heavily supportive it is of the actual men involved in this story that the whole thing ends up feeling less impactful as a standalone film.

From the creative team behind “Pillars of the Earth,” “The Mentalist” and “Heroes,” “Being Human” is Syfy’s re-imagining of the acclaimed BBC original series created by Toby Whithouse. “Being Human” follows four paranormal, 20-something roommates living in a Boston brownstone – vampire “Aidan” (Witwer), werewolves “Josh” (Huntington) and “Nora” (Hager) and ghost “Sally” (Rath) – as they struggle to resist the temptations of their true natures. As the third season of “Being Human” returns, the four learn that there is a price to pay for getting what they want. Watching the characters hide their dark secrets from the world, while helping each other navigate the complexities of living double lives and trying to be human, viewership for the third season averaged 1.8 million viewers, making “Being Human” a Top 10 Cable Program in its time period among adults 18-49 and 25-54. Season 4 of “Being Human” premieres January 2014 on Syfy. Continue reading ‘Being Human: The Complete Third Season (Blu-ray Review)’

Killing Kennedy chronicles one of the most beloved United States Presidents, John F. Kennedy, and the shocking story of his assassination. The movie premiered on the National Geographic Channel and was seen by more than 3.4 million people, making it the most-watched broadcast in the network’s history. This epic journey is the second in a trilogy of books written by Bill O’Reilly and his researcher and partner Martin Dugard that have been adapted for the screen with National Geographic and Scott Free Productions. The first release in the trilogy was “Killing Lincoln,” a powerful display of the outrageous events surrounding the assassination of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. The final instalment in the trilogy is “Killing Jesus,” which follows the events leading up to the crucifixion. Produced by Tony Scott (Unstoppable,Cyrus) and Ridley Scott (Prometheus, American Gangster). See After the jump for a pre-order link and the bonus features! Home invasion movies are one of the current popular subgenre trends of horror in the last couple years. They are one of the easy to cheaply exploit routes to take for young up and coming filmmakers to tackle. The challenge is always putting your own stamp on things. You may be knocking something off, that’s obvious, but HOW you do it is key. Last summer we saw two examples of this subgenre. One put its own creative spin on it and made for a great horror film (You’re Next) while the other had a fun concept but took a rather stale and boring approach to things (The Purge). Anchor Bay’s In Fear looks like its got an interesting enough pitch, so I’m pretty excited to see if they’re are going to have the execution to match. This one takes place in a car instead of a home. Its also got a Sundance Festival label on it too, so that means it may not be completely bottom of the barrel if its dreck. There’s no pre-order available yet, but as soon as we get one, we’ll have it here for you at Why So Blu. Continue reading ‘Sundance Horror Sensation IN FEAR Bows On Blu-ray March 11th!’

I tend to be happy with embracing a film that not only has a goofy premise, but grabs it by the horns in its title alone. Big Ass Spider! does this well in both title form and actual execution. While we have seen our share of Sharknados and Mega Piranhas debuting on the SyFy channel in recent years, Big Ass Spider! was able to move beyond the realm of cable TV and screen at the SXSW Film Festival, before its limited release in theaters and on VOD. It even managed to receive genuine support from critics, as the movie proved to be exactly what it promised in a very good way. I can now also extend similar praise, as Big Ass Spider! may not be a mega-budgeted blockbuster, but it looks very good for what it is and is also a whole lot of fun.

I have to admit. I really wanted nothing to do with Last Vegas theatrically, but after reluctantly taking the trip with it, I actually liked it. It did not top anybody’s Top 10 lists last year, at least I don’t think it did, but that did not stop me from having a good time with the elders in this film. Come on! Look at that amazing cast lineup consisting of Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro and Kevin Kline. How can you not want to check this one out? Heck! I don again! I’ll give it another go around on the Blu-ray format this January. Will you? Check out the full press release below and pre-order your copy now! To be fair, I did not come up with the title of this post nor would I have wanted to write that, that was on the press release e-mail. That said, while I was initially disappointed in theaters by Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, I am one to pay attention to his extended/director cuts of his films, as they often tend to work even better than the theatrical cuts. I am still not sure if the film could actually play better, if it were longer, but I am certainly curious if a different cut will make me disregard how bad Cameron Diaz was in this film or how little I cared for these characters. Regardless, there is a solid-looking Blu-ray headed to stores on February 11th. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

Here is the kind of dramatic indie feature that I can happily support, as it manages to hit a lot of familiar beats, while taking some steps in different directions from the norm. The film features a strong lead performance by Brie Larson, solid support from both the adult and younger actors involved, and this is all achieved with a certain level of comfort that allows the film to feel at many times like a docudrama. The sense of realism is there, but writer/director Destin Cretton does a lot of good work making a fully realized motion picture out of this story adapted from his own short film. Short Term 12 is the kind of film that many people should go and seek out. Now that it is on Blu-ray, they can.

Scream Factory returns with another double feature disc on Blu-ray. This time they’re ditching the 80s and jumping all the way back to the 1950s. At the end of the month you’ll be able to grab this two B-movie set that features The Beasts Of Hollow Mountain and The Neanderthal Man. Both films are making their debut on glorious Blu-ray and have been given transfers that I’m pretty shocked and awed at (in a good way folks, in a good way, you’ll read about it below). I’ve liked the previous double features that Scream Factory has put out thus far, so let’s see how this one holds up as an addition to that lineup. And as always there is a pre-order link you can click below to have a copy ready for you when the release date hits! I always love how each decade seems to have its own approach and unique flavor to what was working with horror. In the 1960s, the world of horror was engulfed stuff like the Hammer Horror films and the Corman Poe movies. People seemed to gravitate to the gothic laced tales of older times. This film Die, Monster, Die! (alternatively retitled as Monster Of Terror at some point) as fits right into that fold event though the setting seems to be taking place in something closer to representing a present day or not that far behind. Horror legend and Frankenstein’s monster himself, Boris Karloff graces the screen here, and I’m sure that’s a prime reason why this one has been dug up and brought back to our attention by Scream Factory. After my last go around with Paranormal Activity 4 in 2012, I swore myself off the franchise for good. I made childish comments such as I don’t care how long this franchise carries on, I want nothing to do with it. When they announced the delay of the fifth film this past year from its lavish Halloween spot to a January play date, I just chuckled heavily. What movies play in January? A million arms raise high. I pick the loudest screaming one. The answer they all shout out unanimously is not very good ones. And then the unthinkable happened. Reports as of recent started flooding in on my RSS feeds saying low and behold, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones actually isn’t that bad and that revered writers praised it for reinvigorating their interest in the franchise and further installments. Say whaaat?! I can’t blame this on dirty ears and not hearing the information correctly. I actually read this with my own two eyes on more occasions this past week than I care to openly admit. So you can see my conundrum here, can you not? How can I not see this? Can all my fellow reviewers in the business be so wrong? I just had to take one for the team and take the plunge last night to find out. Continue reading ‘Guns, Gangsters and Brujas! It’s Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (Movie Review)’

I have made it no secret that I have been a fan of the Paranormal Activity franchise. While not every entry has been great, they have just the right effect on me, given that I enjoy horror films, but am rarely scared by them. Something about this series has worked well enough to have me tense in the theater, but more so the night after seeing the film. It must be the combination of a good audience experience, some of the clever ideas in creating the buildup and payoffs, and the attempts to keep these entries grounded by using the ‘found footage’ aspect. Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones worked for me more than I expected it would. It has to do with some change ups of the format, but I do also continue to enjoy the simplicity of this series, even as it continues to develop its mythology and include bigger special effects.
