Cooley High – The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)

The 70s remains a robust period for cinema. Black cinema during this time has received various forms of appreciation over the years, particularly regarding the explosion of Blaxploitation films. Cooley High is in a different class. Call it “Black American graffiti” if you’d like, and it’s not inaccurate. Whatever the case, this is a funny and endearing coming-of-age story revolving around Black teens in Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing project. Seeing The Criterion Collection give Cooley High a proper Blu-ray release, complete with a fantastic new digital transfer, is a great thing to see. Sure, this is another step in delving into the diverse range of American cinema arriving during influential times in film history, but the film also stands out as a cinematic depiction of joy from the perspective of Black teens in an authentic environment. Having the film scored by Motown hits is merely a bonus.

Smile (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

One of 2022’s biggest box office success stories has come in the form of the original horror film, Smile. Paramount’s little horror flick that came from a short film has generated over $200 million and was able to cross $100 million stateside. As of writing, the film is still in the Top 13 grossing films of the Thanksgiving weekend. Quite an impressive little run for this movie, considering it has been on Paramount+ for a few weeks. The well reviewed film arrives on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on December 13th and will come with a host of extras including a commentary, the original short film, deleted scenes and more. Order yourself a copy of one of the year’s most successful horror films by clicking on the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review at the bottom of the page.

Silent Night, Deadly Night Collection – Collector’s Series (Blu-ray Review)

One of my long standing wishlist titles for Blu-ray have been for the remaining sequels to Silent Night, Deadly Night to find their day in the sun. And at last, on December 13th, they finally will see that dawn. Vestron Video Collector’s Series from Lionsgate has updated their DVD 3 film set and is bringing it to a pretty loaded Blu-ray set. Each film is getting a commentary and plenty of interviews in tow. These films may be of the acquired taste variety, but I tend to love how weird, wacky and somehow disturbing this series gets. There’s even peak hypocrisy with known vehement hater of the first film, Mickey Rooney, leading the cast of the fifth film. This set comes at a pretty great deal for 3 films with new bonus features and you can order it using the paid Amazon Associates link at the bottom of this review.

Yoda Ignites Green in Solo Series

There’s the old saying that every dog has his day, such is the case with short, green Jedi Masters. Marvel recently released issue #1 of Yoda in part one of the story arc, Light and Life: The Coming of the Jedi. No stranger to Star Wars, Cavan Scott, can be found authoring the series with Nico Leon responsible for the artwork. While it’s not necessarily considered an oversized issue, the premier certainly has more content than your typical comic book. That’s all fine and dandy, but how is the story?

Amsterdam (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

David O. Russell returned to theaters back in October with the star heavy cast ensemble film Amsterdam. This marked his first film since 2015’s Joy. Leading the charge of this one were Margot Robbie, John David Washington and Christian Bale. This “don’t make them like they used to” type movie didn’t really sizzle at the box office and was trounced by the run of horror phenomenon Smile. Thus, it came and went, and with it probably a lot of awards hopefulness next year. However, you can see it for yourself when it arrives on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray on December 6th, complete with a Dolby Atmos track and featurette on the film. You can order yourself a copy of Amsterdam by using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows this review at the bottom of the page.

Attack Of The 50 Ft. Woman (Blu-ray Review)

Warner Archive Collection is bringing a movie with perhaps one of the most famous classic genre/cult posters of all time to the Blu-ray format – Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman. Its a movie that is everything from a trailer to a poster, but how many people really know it any more for the film that it is? I’m sure plenty, but moreso a general public conscience. The film will come with a fresh restoration and transfer to go with a commentary and trailer to compliment as bonus features. The disc arrives on December 6th. You can order yourself a copy using the paid Amazon Associates link that follows the review at the bottom of the page.
