You have got to hand it to Hugh Jackman. He began his American film career by starring as Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s X-Men back in 2000 and he has remained loyal to the franchise. Despite proving his versatility as an actor, including his garnering of an Oscar nomination this past year for Les Miserables, Jackman has stepped into the shoes of Logan 6 times now (7, if you include next year’s X-Men: Days of Future Past). The man clearly has a love for playing this character and that is expressed better than ever in The Wolverine. Taking a step away from the X-Men franchise as a whole, this film is content with telling a smaller story with focus, as it deals with the journey of just one character and what it means to have lived a life full of everlasting pain. It also happens to be set in a world of comic book characters, allowing it to still have lots of action and fun with the premise. The result makes me happy to view The Wolverine as the best comic book movie of the summer.

Trance is one of those 2013 films like Stoker where I had every intention of seeing it theatrically, but for one reason or another the stars didn’t align properly and ultimately plans fell through. Simply put, I call that the hardships of life. And much like Stoker, movie goers and critics alike have given Trance higher than average regards thus giving me slightly elevated expectations. So that says something to me, right? Of course it does! My mind works in both quantifications and justifications. So on average I should have anywhere from a 60 to 70 percent chance of liking both films. However, unlike Stoker, it wasn’t a letdown to me and I really enjoyed being “hypnotized” by Danny Boyle’s Trance. Wanna know why? Come on! You know you do. Continue reading ‘Trance (Blu-ray Review)’

Out of all of the panels that were to appear in Hall H this year, the one that I was looking forward to the most (with the exception of Harrison Ford), was the Marvel one and it also proved to be the hardest one to get into as well. I love superhero comics and movies (both DC and Marvel) so I was very excited to see what Marvel had planned for Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier as they were the only two announced panels. I knew that Marvel being Marvel, would of course have something secret that they would spring on us and I couldn’t wait to see what it was. I thought it might be an official announcement for The Avengers 2 or maybe some welcome news of a brand new franchise like Doctor Strange or something. I thought there might even be a mention of The Guardians of the Galaxy, but considered that to be somewhat unlikely since they just started filming the movie. They couldn’t possibly have footage to show after fourteen days of filming right? And there’s no chance that Loki could show up to belittle the Hall H crowd either right? Well, true believers you just might be surprised… Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2013: Marvel Panel’

Sony Pictures had a big day on Friday at San Diego Comic Con this year, mainly due to the debut of footage from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the panel that went along with it (an article on that can be found HERE). With that said, there were plenty of other exciting things going on with Sony and Screen Gems at Hall H that day, which included presentations from 3 of their other upcoming films: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (something I was personally really excited about), The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (a book series I know next to nothing about…sorry), and the debut of footage from the remake of RoboCop (hopefully not as dull as the Total Recall remake from a year prior). The following post is all about what exactly went down at this packed presentation, along with some film photos, panel photos, and videos. Take a look!

For this San Diego Comic Con post, I am going to have to emphasize the word ‘unfortunate’, because it was very unfortunate that I could not make it to the panel for the animated series The Legend of Korra. A new season will be premiering in the fall and it is a great show that I am very much looking forward to. This Emmy-winning sequel series to the Emmy-winning Avatar: The Last Airbender was one of the best shows on TV last year. Not just as far as animated show go, but television in general. It combines incredibly well-animated action and settings with strong characters and very interesting concepts, all while being wholly appropriate for people of all ages. While I was not able to attend the panel, which actually screened the first episode of the upcoming season (Comic Con is just too incredibly busy of a time to see everything), I was able to find some highlights from the panel, which can be found below, along with some photos and a trailer for the upcoming season. Enjoy.

Nobody does John Carpenter’s films justice on home video like Scream Factory. They’ve already released 4 titles directed or produced by him and have 2 more slated for release before the year ends. One of those is his 1987 cult classic Prince of Darkness. It’s a film that reunites Carpenter with actor Donald Pleasance, who starred in Carpenter’s breakout film Halloween. These new extras feature a new interview and commentary with John Carpenter himself (he can be tough to get ahold of for these things nowadays). In addition, rock legend Alice Cooper and frequent composing collaborator Alan Howarth have interviews. Also appearing is another episode of the always informative Horrors Hallowed Grounds series (will Robert Russler show up yet again?). Also, if you act now and preorder from Scream Factory’s official site (click here) you will receive an exclusive 18×24 poster featuring the new artwork. Prince of Darkness comes out September 24, which for Blu-ray collectors an d fans should be “John Carpenter Day”. Continue on to get all the details! I should start by saying I liked this movie. The To Do List is a fun summer comedy that mixes absurd raunchiness and some sincere qualities in terms of what the journey means to the lead character, when all is said and done. It also happens to be another coming-of-age film, which will be in far less theaters than some of the bigger comedies, but still fits the bill of a little indie that could, were it to break out. Also, it’s a coming-of-age film that was written and directed by a woman and centers on a female character. I am not one to do too much discussion about gender politics, but aside from being a pretty funny (and filthy) movie, it is coming from a perspective that does not get seen as much, when it comes to these sorts of stories. Emphasizing once again that I liked the film, it does help that this is not only a movie by a women, starring a women, in a genre generally dominated by boys, but one that does not throw that fact into your face.

No Comic Con is complete without a little bit of weirdness on one of the panels and thankfully we had a new film from writer/director/Monty Python veteran Terry Gilliam to provide plenty of weirdness. The Zero Theorem is the latest project from the famed and eccentric director of films such as 12 Monkeys and Brazil. Occurring later in the afternoon on Thursday in Hall H, it was certainly a low-key but interesting panel to watch, as Gilliam makes very interesting films, which are sometimes a success and sometimes a mess. Here is the panel description: Appearing on stage to introduce the trailer, the first 10 minutes from the film and take your questions are producers Zev Foreman (Killer Joe), Dean Zanuck (Get Low) and Terry’s daughter Amy Gilliam (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus), who produced many of the commercials featured in the film. The panel will be moderated by Gina McIntyre of the Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex. Read on to learn more about what went down on this panel as well as see some brand new photos from the film.

Although Fox never listed what was going to be covered during their Comic-Con panel this year, I knew I had to be there because I was pretty sure that The Wolverine would be included and I had a sneaky suspicion that we might get to see some X-Men: Days of Future Past footage. I was right on both counts, but there was still some big surprises in store. It was a panel that included a funny pickup line, the concept of a Wolverine Broadway musical, and some absolutely amazing footage that I was happy to see twice. Everybody seems to want to get into the zombie business these days. And if you want to be different or above that, you go and call them “infected”. Back in the early 1980s, everybody wanted to cash in on the slasher genre. They were cheap to make and could win you a healthy profit at the box office. In this last decade and still going now, the zombie film seems to be the modern day slasher in those terms. With the advent of being able to do CG or easily seclude people and bloody up some extras, every seems to have a story to tell. And the zombies do sell very well. So why not? Anchor Bay brings us another example of this with their new release, The Demented. It’s a film that has a solid finish, but pitter patters on its way there. When it comes to Rick Springfield, “Jesse’s Girl” immediately plays in 99.9% of our brains. A few less may recall his days on the daytime soap General Hospital. And all of this was back in the 1980s. It’s been a long time since Springfield fever was sweeping the nation. But for some, it never left. And for Rick Springfield, he still continues playing on, knowing his prime has past but all is not lost. An Affair Of The Heart documents the latter part of Rick Springfield’s career and the fans that have stayed loyal and devoted throughout. The documentary is a celebration of a man overcoming himself, touching the lives of others and everything culminating in the joy of his music. Apparently he had more songs than “Jesse’s Girl”. Who knew? Continue reading ‘An Affair Of The Heart (Blu-ray Review)’

35 years ago, John Carpenter and Debra Hill changed the landscape of horror for may years to come. Once the highest grossing independent film of all time, Halloween has scared audiences for over 3 decades. It has been replicated, sequelized and remade, but none stand close to the original “Night He Came Home”. Anchor Bay is celebrating the anniversary in style. First and most importantly this is a new transfer of the film supervised by the film’s cinematographer, the legendary Dean Cundey (this is also not the same transfer used for last years re-release). Some complained the original Blu-ray wasn’t up to snuff with his intended vision. Well, Anchor Bay listened and here you go. There’s also an all new commentary from John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis as well as a new interview with the original scream queen herself. Halloween is my all-time favorite film, as it scared me senseless as a kid and its production story and history served as an inspiration for me and my love of film. “The immortal classic returns” on Blu-ray September 24th. Given all of the Star Wars news that didn’t happen at Comic Con this year, I may as well put out an article that has to deal with another movie about Harrison Ford and a war in the stars, so here it is. Summit Entertainment had a presentation that occurred in a packed Hall H for their big, upcoming films Ender’s Game and Divergent. For those not familiar, both films are based on incredibly popular books, with Ender’s Game, in particular, being a highly regarded novel that has been a much anticipated film adaptation for quite some time. I was happy to be at this packed panel, even if I still don’t know what Divergent is yet, exactly (I’ll do some catching up at some point), because any time you put grumpy ol’ Ford in front of thousands of geeks, fun can surely occur. Read on to learn more about what went down at this presentation and to view some clips, movie pics, and panel photos.

I’ve been there for every edge-of-your-seat moment, every kill, inside Dexter’s most intimate thoughts, watching him transform before my eyes. Now, after eight amazing seasons, it’s time to say goodbye to America’s Favorite Serial Killer and most importantly for me, I was finally able to see the show’s Comic-Con panel for the first and unfortunately the last time ever. I must say this will go down as one of the most exciting days of my life. Read on and see how it all went down Thursday evening in the massive Hall H at Comic-Con 2013 in beautiful downtown San Diego, CA. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Bruce Lee’s big Hollywood film debut, Enter The Dragon. Of course it was his only true Hollywood film, as he died just a month before its premiere. His personal filmography may be very light, but his legacy is one of the largest Hollywood has ever seen. He inspired an entire generation of action films, bringing the kung fu genre to the forefront. There have been many imitators and many trying to become take what he started to a whole new level. Not only did he have, still to this day, an amazing physique but also an amazing mixed martial arts skill set to break wide open the fight scenes in his films. Before getting his big Hollywood break, Bruce had moved back to Hong Kong and started making kung fu films there which later became big hits in other countries. To celebrate 40 years of Bruce’s biggest film, Shout! Factory is releasing The Legacy Collection, gathering his first 3 films that led to Enter The Dragon and Lee’s final appearance Game Of Death. Also, this set is chalk full of extras, including 3 feature length documentaries. Continue reading ‘Bruce Lee: The Legacy Collection (Blu-ray Review)’

Hey Hey! Happy Hunger Games everyone! Many in line for the packed Hall H presentation on Saturday at San Diego Comic Con were very pumped to see what was next in the world of The Hunger Games, with knowledge that Lionsgate would be featuring a panel for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Fortunately, along with a description of the panel that I will provide, the brand new trailer for the film also hit the web today, making it much easier for me to show you, rather than tell. Still, if you would like to learn more about what went down at the panel, as well as check out the new trailer, and get a look at some photos from the panel, continue on reading or scrolling through this post.
