Hall H’s second panel on Thursday was appropriately titled EW: The Visionaries and the idea behind it was to bring three prolific storytellers of the modern day together on a panel and discuss how they can take things in their head and make them real. The panel consisted of Amazing Spider-Man‘s Marc Webb, Gravity‘s Alfonso Cuaron and Shaun of the Dead‘s Edgar Wright. The panel tackled many themes and inherited challenges each of the three filmmakers tackle in their success and I tried my best to capture some of the highlights below. Enjoy! Welcome to the official kickoff of Comic-Con 2013 here in Hall H on Thursday, July 18th. Europa Report was the first panel to grace the beloved and expansive walls of Hall H. Things quickly started off with a “big bang” as the excited audience was greeted with a glimpse of the film’s trailer before the panel consisting of director Sebastian Cordero, composer Bear McCreary, producer Ben Browning, actress Karolina Wydra and JPL scientists Steve Vance and Kevin Hand were called out on the stage I hope to someday grace. Today I was lucky enough to get into this year’s hot ticket television panel – “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” where Marvel honcho and the show’s executive produce Jeph Loeb held court wearing a “Coulson Lives” t-shirt. He then introduced the writer-producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeff Bell, and then the show’s stars Clark Gregg (Agent Phil Coulson), Ming-Na Wen (Agent Melinda May), Ian De Caestecker (Leo Fitz), Elizabeth Henstridge (Jemma Simmons), Chloe Bennet (Skye), and Brett Dalton (Agent Grant Ward) with mastermind/writer/director Joss Whedon coming in last to thunderous applause. I’ve seen Joss Whedon a couple of times now, and he’s always a ton of fun on these panels but I was wondering just how much of the show we would get to see. By now, all comic book fans are familiar with the history of the homicidal maniac Cletus Kasady. A little bit of that symbiote alien left Spidey and jumped on the serial killer way back when and look at him now. He’s been beat down, beat up, sent into orbit and died in space but you can’t keep a crazy man down for long. His dreadful alter ego is back in the new mini-series; Superior Carnage.

This is a big jump to way towards the end of Friday’s activities in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con this year, but I figure Spider-man is popular enough to have more people curious about what went on here than other panels I was able to witness. Here is the official description of what was in store for audiences: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 — Last year, Andrew Garfield, along with director Marc Webb and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, launched a new chapter in the Peter Parker story with The Amazing Spider-Man. With a new installment in the franchise due in 2014, join us in Hall H for one of Comic-Con’s most highly anticipated panels to hear a bit about what awaits Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Having gotten to sit through the entire panel and take a first look at footage from this web-slinging sequel, I will have plenty to share in the rest of this post.

Hey there! You will have to bare with me, as there are plenty of exciting things going on at this year’s San Diego Comic Con and I only have so much time to cover certain aspects of it. This post is simple: I have two new R-rated trailers for upcoming films Riddick and Kick Ass 2. Below you will find those trailers embeded and can take a look for yourself. Here is a description for the panel that took place on Friday at Comic Con: Universal Pictures presents an all-star panel featuring talent from two of its highly anticipated summer films. In attendance will be stars and filmmakers from the action-comedy Kick-Ass 2. Attending from Riddick will be the action-adventure’s star/producer Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious 6), along with actors Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) and Dave Bautista (The Man with the Iron Fists) and Riddick‘s writer/director David Twohy (The Fugitive). As much good as The Conjuring has in it, I wish the marketing didn’t spoil the film’s key scene. I am not going to delve to deep, but Lili Taylor (one of the unluckiest actresses, given that for such seemingly nice woman, she always seems to play emotionally or physically scarred characters) is involved in what is easily the film’s most accomplished horror set piece, based on the setup and payoff. No, not everyone has necessarily seen the same marketing for the film, but the point I am getting at is that the film is effective enough, but does not do much to push the genre forward, nor does it have to. The Conjuring is effective in merging 70s horror sensibilities with the vision of a modern day horror filmmaker. There is not much more to glean from the film, but it looks good, will scare many, and is not obnoxiously dour.

A few years ago audiences were treated to RED, a film based off a not-very-well-known comic, which centered on the idea of a retired CIA agent getting back into action. While the film was nothing like its comic counterpart, it got by on its playful sense of humor, fun cast, and the fact that it allowed Helen Mirren to wield a mini gun. For whatever reason, a sequel was green lit and the results are far from great. Red 2 does not have a whole lot of novelty this time around, as we are already used to the concept of older folks cracking wise, while cracking skulls. It does not help that the film has an alarmingly twisty narrative that relies on globetrotting and double crosses throughout, but still never manages to be compelling. The loose tone is definitely still apparent, but I can’t quite say that I needed to watch more of these retired, extremely dangerous folk.

There’s absolutely no way I would ever miss seeing the man I look up to the most in the industry today, the hardest working man in Hollywood, creator/star Adam Green (Hatchet) of Fearnet’s Holliston TV series. So much so that I actually made a special trip up to Sails Pavillion today at 11 AM to personally say hello before tonight’s Comic-Con 2013 panel in Room 24 ABC. Cast members Laura Ortiz (Happy Endings) and Oderus Urungus (GWAR), director Sean Becker (The Guild) and fan-favorite moderator Alison Haislip (The Voice) were all in attendance tonight at the 8:30 PM panel. Sadly, Dee Snyder could not make it due to a concert he was performing. Boo! But that’s okay! It’s Holliston folks! So much fun to be had despite the missing others! In all honesty,with the exception of the sad goodbyes said to the cast of Dexter in Hall H tonight, Holliston was my favorite panel of the day at Thursday’s Comic-Con 2013. Read all about it here! I’m going to be completely honest with everyone here. The Conjuring flat out looks like a movie I would want to see. If I wasn’t getting into an early press screening of the film, then you’d better believe I’d be laying down my hard earned cash to cover the price of admission over the weekend. In my opinion The Conjuring has four main things going for it right out of the gate. First, word of mouth…it has received rave reviews from critics who have been treated to special advanced showings of it. Second…James Wan! The man did Saw and Insidious, people! And now’s he graduating onto much larger things like the seventh Fast and Furious sequel. How grand is that? He’s a big boy with Universal now. Kudos! Third…Vera Farmiga. I love her in everything! She just brings it. And finally…the following quote I found online regarding the film’s rating had me absolutely dying to see this. Back in 1996, The Smashing Pumpkins were the kings of the alternative music scene. Their singles were on every station, their double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was setting chart records and they just couldn’t be stopped. To cash in on this success, they released The Aeroplane Flies High, a collection of expanded versions of their singles from the current album. The release included B-sides and a detailed booklet from Billy Corgan. As a part of their reissuing program, the wheel has landed on The Aeroplane Flies High to be remastered and re-released. This will also mark its first appearance on vinyl. To celebrate the reissue, they dug into the vaults and found even more demos, rarities and some live tunes to accompany each disc. In addition a whole new sixth disc has been added featuring highlights from their massively successful 1996 world tour. And for those who buy the CD version, a full live show from France will come as a bonus DVD. The Smashing Pumpkins were my favorite band in my middle/high school days and it was a nice trip down memory lane to revisit this release. Turbo presents the idea of a snail racing in the Indy 500. There are reasons why this happens and the fact that the film is animated and intended for children allows for an obvious amount of suspension of disbelief, but let me reiterate that this is a film that presents the idea of a Snail racing in the Indy 500. Sometimes my tone is not too clear, but I can just say right now that did not like this movie. It is certainly bright, colorful, and full of talent from all sides, given the production value of the animation, voice cast, etc., but in terms of being entertained by Turbo, that just wasn’t happening. I can imagine that those who buy into the premise will be more entertained, but given that the movie settled in its groove early on and did not have me on board, I can say pretty easily that I just did not care for this film.

Given the popularity of shows like
Game of Thrones and
Spartacus and the fact that we at Why So Blu are big fans of those shows,
Vikings is a series that I would have been happy to get into, were I to have had the time. I am quite pleased that I am now going to have the chance, as it arrives on Blu-ray on October 15th. I have heard good things about this series and it looks intriguing enough, so hopefully it will be as compelling as some of these other similar series have been. One thing is for sure, the Blu-ray is packed with extras, which is always a plus. Read on to learn more about this upcoming release.

If there is an excuse to put up a post about Predator, I’ll be there. At this year’s San Diego Comic Con, Predator will be making a bit of s splash on the exhibit floor, as fans will be able to pre-order the 3D Blu-ray, which will also feature an option and all new experience. For an extra cost, fans will be able to order this new Blu-ray and have their image used to make them the victim as a customized figurine is created using 3D Systems 3D printing technology that features the Predator alien holding the fans’ severed head. That sounds a little insane and a little awesome, but that can also describe Comic Con in general. Read on to learn more about this Blu-ray event.
