NEW ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES TEASER TRAILER

ANCHORMANNot a whole lot of new to share with this one, but Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is arriving this December and I can only imagine more clips of the film will begin to flood the internet soon enough.  With that said, posted below is a new teaser trailer, which resembles the first, but with some alternate lines of dialogue.  It is humorous enough, as I enjoy these characters and am hoping that these guys are smart enough to know how to make a sequel that is less a repeat of the first film (ahem…Hangover Part II) and more of something completely different, as well as completely ridiculous.  Regardless, the film arrives this winter and you can check out the new teaser trailer in this post.

Take The Journey With ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ (Movie Review)

Star Trek Into Darkness TNBeing a huge Star Wars fan all my life who frequently has called Star Trek boring, dull and lifeless with the exception of The Next Generation episodes Ashley Judd appeared in, I was astonished by how much fun I had with J.J. Abrams fresh take on the franchise back in 2009.  In my opinion, he resuscitated the franchise, made it enjoyable and brought much needed life and energy back into it, not to mention some really humorous moments too.  And for that, I appreciated J.J. Abrams even more as a filmmaker and didn’t even bat an eye when this sequel was announced back in 2011.  I have actually been anxiously awaiting its arrival in theaters.  I was so thrilled and taken aback by the first one, 2009’s Star Trek, that I have actually been genuinely pumped, geeked and excited for this next chapter in what I would presume to be a trilogy, Star Trek Into Darkness.  And quite honestly, I never thought I would ever utter those words that I am excited for something Star Trek.  It feels like a betrayal to everything Star Wars and that goes against all my rooted values, but sometimes you need to spice life up and stop being a hater, right?  Different is good!  Sometimes. Hero Complex Film Festival: Maniac (Movie Review)

maniac whysoblu thumbFollowing the special screenings and Q&As for The Mist and the double-dose of Guillermo del Toro features, I was then able to catch a screening of the horror remake Maniac at the Hero Complex Film Festival in LA.  Maniac is a remake of an 80s horror feature of the same name and features the same basic story of depravity, as we follow a serial killer around and watch him scalp his female victims.  The separating factor for this version is how stylish it is.  Along with the 80s synth-infused soundtrack, Maniac is almost completely shot from the perspective of the killer, bringing a lot of credence to the challenging filmmaking techniques used to accomplish this.  However, deciphering between which is great, the style or the overall effectiveness of the film, is where the challenge in accepting Maniac really lies.

Hero Complex Film Festival 2013: Guillermo del Toro Q&A

deltoroguillermo01Following The Mist, I was also able to attend another very entertaining scheduled event at the Hero Complex Film Festival, a back-to-back screening of the The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth.  Both are films written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, who provided an hour-long Q&A in between features.  For anyone who is familiar with Guillermo del Toro, they would know that he is one of the most entertaining directors to listen to, as he is always full of passion for his projects and isn’t one to censor himself (not to mention his wonderful Mexican accent).  This entire conversation has been recorded and provided in a link.  Read on to learn more about what he had to say about his past films, his career as a filmmaker, his personal life, and his upcoming feature films, most notably Pacific Rim (Post Updated with latest Pacific Rim trailer).

Hero Complex Film Festival 2013: The Mist Q&A

struzan-themist-001I was happy to be able to attend the Hero Complex Film Festival in Hollywood this year and check out a few of the events that were on the lineup.  For me, the first scheduled event that I took part in was a screening of The Mist (an original 35mm print) followed by a Q&A.  Initially I was led to believe that only writer/director Frank Darabont would be in attendance, but I was happy to see that star Tom Jane was also on hand to discuss this 2007 horror film.  As a big fan of The Mist, I was very excited to check out the film with an audience, my first time on the big screen since Thanksgiving 2007 (an amazing release date for this of all films).  Read on to learn more about what went down at this Q&A, as well as find the entire recording of this conversation.

Cloud Atlas (Blu-ray Review)

Cloud AtlasEver see something so confusing that looks so mind-bending that you just had to see it with your own eyes despite what your better judgment and gut told you?  Well, that’s exactly how I felt about Cloud Atlas and its many bizarre, but very bold and ambitious trailers out there.  Much like the story within Life of Pi and the pursuit of whether there’s a God or not, going into Cloud Atlas I had hoped all my questions and curiosity on the subject matter of what’s beyond this life would be answered.  After all, that’s what the movie was about, or is it?  Wait!  Hold on.  Are you telling me you don’t know what Cloud Atlas is about or what to expect?  How could you?  Well anyway, welcome to the club.  That’s what we’re here to talk about today and if I go off on a tangent please forgive me as I just got done watching a time/globe spanning near 3-hour amazing, high concept journey so I’m a little taken aback right now to say the least.  Come on. We have a long and winding path to embark upon here in this review.  We best be moving along with little to no haste. Continue reading ‘Cloud Atlas (Blu-ray Review)’

The Great Production Values Highlight ‘The Great Gatsby’ (Movie Review)

the-great-gatsby-why-so-blu thumbA Baz Luhrmann-directed adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s acclaimed novel “The Great Gatsby” is either the summer blockbuster for everyone else or the obscure one that joins the fold of all the others.  Everyone that has gotten their fill of superheroes, disaster films, alien invasions, and other high concept ideas, now has the option of seeing the big budget drama that is filled with lavish production values and emotions that sit right on the surface of the characters.  Instead of actions sequences, there are extravagant party scenes, with an aggressively modern soundtrack.  Instead of tough one-liners, there are flippant asides.  Instead of the destruction of city blocks, there are explosions of champagne bottles amidst the CG rendered New York of the 1920s.  All of this can be exciting to the right viewer.  Luhrmann has attempted to make the ultimate film version of ‘Gatsby’, but for all the style and excess, it still has the core romantic drama that takes hold in the second half and ends the more frenzied excitement that propels the first half.  It is fortunate, however, that this is perhaps the most entertaining adaptation of the story overall, given the less successful attempts from the past.

‘Frances Ha’ The Impetuous Dancer (Movie Review)

frances ha whysoblu poster-001Frances Ha is the latest feature from Noah Baumbach, who is a filmmaker that I sometimes really enjoy and other times find to be hard to not be frustrated by.  His films always tend to have very strong and natural performances, but as strong as the writing may be, the tone always tends to be more on the sorrowful side, with a lot of meanness seeped in for good measure.  Frances Ha is a nice change in pace.  Along with his co-writer and star Greta Gerwig, Baumbach has made a film that has a lot of old-fashioned screwball energy, with a healthy dose of sensibilities akin to the films of a 70s Woody Allen (shooting in black & white is the most obvious nod in that regard).  As a result, while the characters can still be frustrating to watch, the film has a bouncy energy that seems to effectively reflect the lives of bewildered twentysomethings living in New York.

The Irresistible ‘Great Gatsby’ (Movie Review)

Great GatsbyBefore entering Tuesday evening’s press screening of The Great Gatsby, I strongly held the opinion that this was either going to be one of those films you’d love or you’d hate with uncompromising passion, no middle ground in the equation.  I know I found myself seriously conflicted in how I felt about it these past several months.  The first trailer did nothing to persuade me that this was a film I must-see.  Other than my infinite love for Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge masterpiece, I had not one ounce of desire to partake in a viewing.  And then came the second theatrical trailer and it totally erased all the negativity I had surrounding the picture.  Despite not being the biggest fan of Carey Mulligan, I found myself longing to see this spectacular unfold on screen.  And then boom!  A third trailer was released and I felt a little uneasy again until I saw a preview for the film on the Cloud Atlas Blu-ray I was reviewing…talk about indecisiveness.  Haha.  All I knew was that Tuesday night was going to be an interesting night to say the least.  Which way did I teeter?  Well, you’ll have to read on to find out, won’t you?

Ender’s Game Teaser Trailer Has Arrived

ender whysobluEnder’s Game has continued to seem like one of those things that would just never happen.  I am a huge fan of the award-winning novel by Orson Scott Card, but given the challenge that the story represents in creating a film that could really work, I can see why the film has remained in development hell for so long.  Well, now the wait is finally over, as the film is set to come out this November and now we have the first trailer for the film.  As always, anything could happen, but given the look of the film and the cast involved, I am quite pleased with being excited for this upcoming feature.  Continue on to check out the first official trailer for the film.

The Fugitive: 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Arrives on September 3!

fugitiveWarner Bros. Home Entertainment will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Academy Award-nominated (1993 for Best Picture) The Fugitive on September 3 with a new anniversary Blu-ray edition. The heart-pounding thriller stars Harrison Ford as wrongly-convicted Dr. Richard Kimble and Tommy Lee Jones in his Oscar and Golden Globe winning performance as Kimble’s relentless pursuer.  Kimble, who has been unjustly accused of murdering his wife, must find the real killer, and the reasons for the slaying, before he’s captured thanks to a nationwide manhunt led by tenacious United States Deputy Marshal Sam Gerard.  This is one of Harrison Ford’s best films and it also represents the best representation of director Andrew Davis’ career.  Tommy Lee Jones’ memorable award winning role as Gerard was also justifiably acclaimed too.  If you haven’t seen this thriller, you should correct that right now with this new edition that offers a lot more extras than the previous release!  Continue reading ‘The Fugitive: 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray Arrives on September 3!’

Texas Chainsaw (Blu-ray Review)

Well, whether you wanted it or not, you got another Texas Chainsaw “Massacre” film.  Many say this was to erase the puddle of mud that was Michael Bay’s bastardized attempt back in 2003, but quite honestly…I liked that one, Milo and all.  So what’s this latest incarnation about?  Good question!  And I’m really glad you asked because that’s what we are gathered here to talk about today.  Supposedly, this time around this one, Texas Chainsaw without the ‘Massacre” in the title, is a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic.  And yeah…if you buy that one I also sell you on the fact that Superman Returns was a direct sequel to the legendary Superman II too.  But whatever, toe-may-doe toe-ma-doe, let’s get going here because I don’t have all day, at least not for this fill in the (blankety blank adjective of your choice) title.
