It’s truly amazing how die hard the so-called twi-hard fans really are. They camped out for days for the final twilight comic con panel. I was lucky enough to get a spot in the press pit right next to the stage with some nice and some not so nice photographers and journalists. After being crushed up against the stage (by photographers not fans) at the Twilight Panel I didn’t know if I could make it all the way to ballroom 20 for the Psych panel. Comic-Con thankfully has a Starbucks inside and it was very tempting to just sit down and relax with a black iced tea and a scone after the Twilight pandemonium. I ran, to the Psych panel (okay I walked really fast) and I made it just in time for the panel moderator and Psych cast member Timothy Ombudsman’s introduction. The brilliant Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) “establishes a claim to be the best comic filmmaker now working” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times) as Third World ruler Admiral General Aladeen in the “outrageously funny” (Rafer Guzman, Newsday) comedy THE DICTATOR, reigning supreme in an all-new Banned* & Unrated version debuting August 21, 2012 on Blu-ray with a Digital Copy, DVD (both with UltraViolet ™), On Demand and for Digital Download from Paramount Home Media Distribution. The hysterical tale of an inept despot’s first trip to America, THE DICTATOR “starts at outrageous and rockets on from there” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone) as the leader of Wadiya is stripped of power and suddenly forced to live his ultimate nightmare…the American dream. THE DICTATOR features an outstanding comedic ensemble including Anna Faris (Scary Movie), Ben Kingsley (Hugo), Jason Mantzoukas (“The League”), Chris Parnell (“30 Rock”), Bobby Lee (“MADtv”) and Jessica St. Clair (Bridesmaids). “My film is funnier than equal rights for women, as gut-busting as a UN resolution and more hilarious than watching a student set himself on fire. Owning a copy of my glorious and award-winning** film will give you more pleasure than having Halle Berry rub almond oil into your buttocks while you stimulate her bint al-sahn with your mashloof…and it will cost you considerably less money,” said Admiral General Aladeen. “Although my film was subjected to the infamous authoritarian censorship of the West, thanks to Blu-ray and DVD you can finally see all the really naughty bits. I have your home address, so trust me, you WILL love it.” Continue reading ‘The Dictator: Banned and Unrated on Blu-ray August 21st’

Bobcat Goldthwait did a hell of a lot of promoting for his film, God Bless America, which has been entertaining to see. Having retired from stand-up comedy nearly a decade ago, with his eyes set on being a filmmaker, he’s since made some interesting (and quite good) dark comedies; including Sleeping Dogs Lie and World’s Greatest Dad (Robin Williams is great in that movie). I like Bobcat Goldthwait. Listening to him now, he is very honest, funny, and brash in a good sort of way. It is unfortunate that God Bless America is not a better film. It certainly has a lot on its mind in regards to the state of America’s fascination with reality television, among other things, but the film does not come together as strongly as it could. Revisiting it now and after hearing more of what Goldthwait had to say, I still think it is worthy of a recommendation and the Blu-ray is certainly solid. After returning from the army, New York bartender Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) learns the secrets of the trade from his new boss, Doug Coughlin (Bryan Brown), before heading to Jamaica to work at a local resort Tiki Bar. While in Jamaica, Flanagan falls in love with an American tourist (Elisabeth Shue). Academy Award nominee Tom Cruise (Oscar Nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Jerry McGuire in 1997) stars in Cocktail as Brian Flanagan, one of Cruise’s most memorable films from earlier in his career. This summer, Cocktail is available digitally restored and presented for the first time ever on Blu-ray High Definition. Continue reading ‘Cocktail (Blu-ray Review)’

The Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of books published by Scholastic that has already become a literary phenomenon with over 36.5 million copies in circulation. One of the best reviewed films of the year and one I really wanted to see, but missed out on in theaters, Marley, is coming home to Blu-ray and DVD on August 7th. Marley is a documentary-biographical feature that covers the life of famed musician Bob Marley. Directed by Kevin MacDonald (Touching the Void, The Last King of Scotland) and featuring a soundtrack composed of many tracks and live recordings by Bob Marley & The Wailers, the film is an all encompassing look at the life of a man who became a legend. With tons of concert footage, interviews with his family and those influenced by him, and other insights into reggae’s greatest star, I am very excited to finally be able to check out this feature. The Duplass brothers, particularly Mark Duplass, must be doing something right. This year alone, Mark has been in four movies and still has The League on FX coming back in the fall. He and his brother Jay have also been doing quite well. Earlier in the year, their film Jeff, Who Lives at Home came out in theaters and now they have The Do-Deca-Pentathlon hitting theaters and VOD. ‘Do-Deca’ was actually made a few years ago, but between ‘Jeff’ and 2010’s Cyrus it would seem that the Duplass’ have been given the chance to put out their much smaller and more personal movie. ‘Do-Deca’ is a minimalist sort of feature that doubles as a high stakes sports film and an exploration of sibling rivalry. It is certainly small scale, but also well done. Continue reading ‘Brotherly Love Gets Serious In ‘The Do-Deca-Pentathlon’’

Those that know me know that I’m a huge fan of the infamous Starz Original Series, Spartacus, but things changed a bit for me this year. Like George Washington, I cannot tell a lie. I severely missed not having Andy Whitfield filling that coveted role. But like all good things, everything comes to an end no matter if we like it or not. We just have to press on. There’s always hope and right now Starz, Liam and the cast and crew of third season, Spartacus: War of the Damned, is trying to provide just that as they take us on an exclusive behind-the-scenes first look at the making of the series’ final season. Make sure to check out the press release and short video below.

In theory, I should have been fairly excited about a gritty, R-rated thriller from director Oliver Stone. After Stone’s last set of films, which includes Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, W., and World Trade Center, Savages seems like the kind of film that would bring him back to the edgy kind of filmmaking once utilized by the man who made Natural Born Killers and scripted Scarface. It certainly looks like an Oliver Stone film, complete with brutal violence, the use and repetition of certain types of music juxtaposed with symbolic cutaways, and a cranked up sense of direction. Unfortunately, the film falters by having certain key characters not really register as well as they should, ending quite poorly, and not having much of a sense of purpose, which seems key in all of Stone’s films. Still, a few of the actors and a number of other elements in the film worked well enough for me to find a decent B-movie here. Continue reading ‘‘Savages’ Is a B-Movie With Only So Much Bite’
