For all the big budget, summer action/sci-fi/fantasy flicks that have recently come out, it is nice to also get the big budget, carefree comedy around this time of year as well. The Campaign is a silly comedy that revolves around Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as rivals in an election, where both men are in the running for Congressman. It is a fairly simple setup and the comedy is exclusively about having fun. I wish there was a little more in the way of political satire, especially since having the R-rating seemed to imply a bit more free reign; however, I got enough entertainment out of seeing these two stars acting as political rivals slinging mud at each other, with more and more ridiculous outcomes. I am always really thrilled to want to recommend a documentary, when I find that it is truly fascinating and entertaining. There are some documentaries that I would only recommend to certain people, based on what I know about them, whether it be appreciation for these type of films or the subject matter that it is based around. The Imposter falls into the realm of other favorite documentaries of mine, such as Man on Wire and The King of Kong, as I think it is a film that can be enjoyed by an assortment of different people, because the story is so wild and takes so many turns throughout that one can help but be engaged. Given the event that it is based on and the style applied to this documentary, this is just as good as seeing this story adapted into a mainstream studio film. From Emerald City Comicon: Paul Tobin announced he’s writing a blend of horror and crime that will appeal to those who like books such as Locke & Key, Preacher, or B.P.R.D.! Colder comes from the creative team behind the successful Falling Skies comic, writer Paul Tobin (Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four, Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man) and artist Juan Ferreyra (Rex Mundi). “Horror and mystery are two things that have always fascinated me, and I wanted to bring those elements together in a story woven around what I consider one of my strongest tools as a writer, which is character. One facet of horror that I really wanted to explore is how the tension of horror is at its peak when it’s still a mystery. But . . . what if we had a chance to peek behind the curtain and into the darkened closet, and found that the truth is even worse?” Paul Tobin questioned. IDW Publishing is proud to release the hardcover comic book collection of ROAD RAGE, available tomorrow in comic book stores throughout North America. Renowned author Stephen King and Eisner-winner Joe Hill collaborated for the first time in Throttle, a story that paid tribute to Richard Matheson’s classic tale of suspense Duel. Now, ROAD RAGE presents the four-issue compilation of the comic-book tellings of both stories. Adapting the story alongside Hill and King is Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer, and editor of Hill’s New York Times best-selling graphic novel series, Locke & Key. The respective artists on the two stories were Nelson Daniel and Rafa Garres. Available on Wednesday, ROAD RAGE will feature all-new introductions by King and Hill, as well as an all-new wraparound cover by Zach Howard and Daniel, and additional sketches and character designs from Daniel. Self described as “Medical Grade Revenge” combining elements of 100 Bullets, Dexter and ER, this dark title caught my attention very quickly. We’ve all received those foreboding emails littered with urban myths about being cautious as to whom you meet in a bar. You never know if you might wake up in a bath tub the next morning with a kidney missing as you’ve fallen victim to some mysterious black market organ trade. Harvest brings that modern legend to the pages of Image in greater detail.

I normally don’t review theatrical features unless it’s warranted. Well, let’s just say that it’s warranted now. If you know me then you also know that I’m a horror fiend and that I hold the REC films close to my wretched heart. I consider REC and REC 2 two of the greatest horror films of all time. In fact, it’s because of the first REC film that I went region free in terms of Blu-rays and all. I have the Spanish import of that disc. I also have the Japanese import of the second film. When the filmmakers decided to expand on the REC mythology I was excited and nervous. The third entry into the successful franchise is entitled REC 3: Genesis, and as you can see, is the prequel. There will be a part four entitled REC 4: Apocalypse next year, which will end the series. For now, I will review part 3. Please keep in mind that the following review may or may not read like a rant, and will be spoiler filled, so if you haven’t seen the film (which is available on VOD through various outlets) then please skip my review, which is more of a cathartic piece than anything else. Be as it may, I tried to sit down this past weekend and for the first time ever watch the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Total Recall. Needless to say, I did not make it all the way through. I know. Boo! I became extremely bored and restless half way through. Like my experience with Serenity, I yet again seem to be in the minority when it comes to appreciating Sci-fi classics – although oddly enough, I do utterly adore and appreciate The Fifth Element. I don’t think I’ll fully understand why that is, but I try not to question logic too much when it comes to my love of certain quirky movies. My take away from last weekend’s viewing was that I finally got to experience the three-breasted-woman and appreciated how good looking and yummy Sharon Stone really was back in her Basic Instinct days. However, I won’t let this past weekend discourage me from everything I have seen so far since it was showcased at last year’s Comic-Con in regards to this rebooted title. Hear me world?! I’m coming in with an open mind. Continue reading ‘Watching ‘Total Recall’ Makes Me Want To Forget (Movie Review)’

Get your ass to…London? It seemed like it would be easy to constantly compare this remake to Paul Verhoven’s excessive, but entertaining Arnold Schwarzeneggar sci-fi/action flick, Total Recall, but the film has lifted so many different elements from an assortment of other action and sci-fi films that comparing it to just one movie would not do enough justice. The worst thing about this new Total Recall, similarly based on Philip K. Dick’s science fiction short story, “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale,” is that it drops the most interesting aspect about its story – the idea of whether or not we are supposed to believe what is happening. The lack of ambiguity, along with the lack of much in the way originality or personality in the filmmaking, make this a very expensive film that has little to offer, beyond some fancy special effects, which will only be blandly recalled after. All the great directors have to start somewhere, right? Well, David Lean (Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago) and famous English playwright Noel Coward would team up for four films in three years. How’s that for plowing through? David Lean was an editor and he and Coward teamed up to create some film magic so to speak. The Criterion Collection has brought us a beautiful boxed set of these early Lean/Coward films for our enjoyment. They come fully restored and fully loaded in terms of extras. How will they stack up to scrutiny? This review will be a doosy, and for all intents and purposes, the overall grading system will be for the films themselves as whole as opposed to rating each individual film separately. The same for the technical specifications. It’s easier that way since I’m reviewing a complete set and not just one film. I hope this makes sense. Let’s get to it! You know, I’ve always fancied myself as not having a fear for many things. Okay, there’s the dislike of bats (fear is such a nasty word), I’ll give you that one. But watching the new SyFy Channel show Haunted Highway has introduced me to a level of fear I’ve never considered before. Maybe I’m just getting old but watching these two person teams search for paranormal anomalies while on their own in the wilderness freaks me out. And to make it worse, Dana Workman, the subject of my interview today and one of the investigators on the show, is a beautiful, petite young woman. So what does that say about me? I bet I can at least take her in arm wrestling though. Enough about me. Let’s learn about my new hero… Continue reading ‘Bob Chats with Haunted Highway’s Dana Workman: SyFy Channel’s Hottest New Investigator’
