I just realized it that it may be pseudo-comedy week here on Why So Blu – we’ve been dropping them like they were hot all week long and we’re not done yet. Up next we’ve got The Duplass Bros. sleeper comedy Jeff, Who Lives At Home starring the cry-baby from Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jason Segel along with Mr. Hangover I & II, Ed Helms. Judy Greer and Susan Sarandon round out the cast in this esoteric comedy of sorts. If the Duplass name sounds familiar that’s due to another film called Safety Not Guranteed, which was also reviewed here on Why So Blu. I will say one thing – The Duplass Bros. are busy guys, whether they’re behind-the-scenes or in front of the camera. They’re coming up, it seems. The Expendables are back and older than ever, plus Liam Hemsworth! This action-packed sequel is silly and stupidly entertaining, but at least it delivers on what seemed to be promised in the first film. I was let down by the first film, due to its intent on striving for a fairly serious tone and boring me with its bland story in between its few action set pieces. This time around, Stallone and his crew have a much more go-for-broke attitude about things and they have plenty of fun while delving into one explosive action sequence after another. That said, the movie is all sorts of ugly (CG, locations, the quality in general), even as it pulses with all the energy ridiculous kills and cheesy one-liners have to offer. Make no mistake; this movie is exactly what it looks like, so take that as you will. Continue reading ‘‘The Expendables 2’: The Legend Of Van Damme’s Gold’

ParaNorman was first introduced to me by a former co-worker whose family’s business (Peak Solutions LLC) just so happened to be directly involved in the production of this 3D stop-motion animated adventure film. How you say? Well they supplied/sold the many 3D rendering color printers the studio/production team used to create thousands of models that painstakingly captured every movement and conveyed every emotion in the character’s faces. Plus on top of that, the nightmarish subject matter and trailer for this one looked hella cool too. But we’ve all been there before. Cool trailers and crafty concepts don’t always necessarily mean its going to be good. So while we are gathered here today, let’s take a closer look at this one under my proverbial microscope. First and foremost, I should say that I really dug ParaNorman. The film has quietly stood as one of my most anticipated films of the year, as it fell into the realm of having so many different things that called out to wanting me to like it, and it completely delivered. A stop-motion animated zombie film that can appeal to all audiences, from the studio behind Coraline, is a film that easily has my interest and the fact that ParaNorman was able to match the kind of high expectations that I don’t like to have for films is quite rewarding. The film is great to look at, unique in its presentation, fun and exciting, as well as very funny, and not afraid to present some deeper themes and meaning behind a tale that could have simply been a kid’s zombie movie. Simply put, ParaNorman has all of its parts assembled incredibly well. Continue reading ‘‘ParaNorman’ Sees Dead People And The Film Delivers A Lively, Good Time’

After seeing Paranorman tonight, here’s another animated flick I’m really looking forward to seeing. Columbia/Sony Picture’s Hotel Transylvania stars Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi, CeeLo Green, David Spade, Molly Shannon and Fran Drescher. Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world’s most famous monsters – Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more – to celebrate his daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but his world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis. Check out the video below! Continue reading ‘Columbia’s HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA “Call Me Mavy” Video’

Up next is a film that warms the spirit and enlightens the soul. Scratch that. It’s Sacha Baron Cohen’s new film The Dictator. I remember when I saw the trailers for the film and they didn’t really do anything for me, but as they kept drilling the promotional materials deep into my skull I slowly started to come around and actually anticipate its release. I missed it in theaters, and really haven’t seen a Cohen film since Borat (Bruno looked awful, so I missed that one on purpose), but I have now sat down and watched The Dictator on Blu-ray. How’d it go you ask? Well, stay tuned after the jump and find out. I give you The Dictator: Banned & Unrated on Blu-ray! Continue reading ‘The Dictator: Banned & Unrated (Blu-ray Review)’

Marley is a documentary focused on Bob Marley’s life. The film is not about taking any sort of stance, it simply exists as a fascinating record of an influential figure, whose music has literally had an effect on the world. Following a limited theatrical release, accompanying its availability on VOD, the film is now available on Blu-ray with a slew of extras, all further helping to delve into the life and influence of Robert Nesta Marley. Featuring a straight-forward account of Marley’s life, complete with interviews from members of his family, friends, and others with some sort of connection to him, not to mention a fantastic soundtrack that is composed of live and rare performance footage, Marley is pretty much the ultimate take on understanding plenty about the reggae legend. I guess I could have liked this film a little bit more were certain things handled differently. Falling somewhere in between Stranger Than Fiction and Weird Science, Ruby Sparks is a comedy-drama with a dash of the fantastical that involves a writer literally creating a dream girl out of his own typewritten words. The concept is fine, but various issues I had with the early portions of this film and its switch to more dramatic territory left me a little unsatisfied with it. It is a shame, because the film finds decent balance with being too quirky and acceptably charming, especially given the majority of its cast. Still, I was not quite taken with Calvin and his dream girl from Dayton, Ohio. Continue reading ‘‘Ruby Sparks’ A Little Too Much’

Paramount Home Media Distribution proudly presents one of the studio’s most iconic films, newly restored and in sparkling high definition for the first time ever, when SUNSET BOULEVARD debuts on Blu-ray November 6, 2012. A fitting release to continue Paramount’s centennial celebration, Billy Wilder’s seminal classic continues to enthrall audiences with its bizarre and tragic tale of Hollywood’s dark side. Nominated for 11 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, and winner for Best Writing, Best Art Direction and Best Music, SUNSET BOULEVARD was named by the American Film Institute as #12 on its list of the Greatest American Movies. William Holden, as a struggling young screenwriter, and Gloria Swanson, as an aging silent film queen, created two of the screen’s most memorable characters, delivering unforgettable performances amidst the dramatic light and shadow of John Seitz’s evocative cinematography. With the third season of Louie currently airing, it was of course appropriate for the second season of the critically acclaimed series to arrive on Blu-ray, around the same time. I am a huge fan of Louie and the work of Louis C.K. in general, so even though I have already watched these episodes multiple times during the week of their individual releases, when initially airing on television, I was happy to go back and rewatch the season once more and provide an evaluation of this Blu-ray set. Of course, I would say that this show still holds up and continues to impress in the way that it improved upon the first season and managed to be more than just a comedy series, by adding on layers of absurdity as well as the sublime parts of life and some of the darkness that comes with it. I only wish the series was expanded on through the use of more special features, which are unfortunately light on this disc. Read on to learn more about this Blu-ray release.

Between you and me, I think I heard it all now. First there was Zombieland, then there were Zombie Strippers. Now, low and behold, there is Zombie Cat. I just think we, as a society of people all united for a single purpose, just can’t get enough of the fictional monsters to the extent where we have to “zombify” animals now. Thank God there are still CCW laws in effect and valid when there are zombie cats preying on us in the world. I betcha those critters are fast too. And probably have mad jumping skills. Wanna know more? Hit up the press release below, check out the book’s trailer and by all means…pre-order yours now!
