The latest season of Mad Men will soon be available for all to own on Blu-ray and DVD this October. It is one the best shows on TV and certainly one of my favorites. Here is what Lionsgate had to say: The men and women of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce are back with all-new drama inside and outside of the office. From creator Matthew Weiner (HBO’s “The Sopranos”) and featuring a stellar cast including Jon Hamm (Friends with Kids), Elisabeth Moss (TV’s “The West Wing”), Christina Hendricks (I Don’t Know How She Does It) and January Jones (X-Men: First Class), MAD MEN: Season Five arrives on Blu-ray Disc, DVD and Digital Download on October 16, 2012. This wildly praised season is going to come to homes fast than you know it and it will be packed with special features. Read on to learn more about this upcoming home release. The Coen Bros. film Fargo is a favorite of mine. I think it is a wonderful, dark comedy that works thanks to its fantastic script and great performances from all involved. It is quirky, despite going to dark places; sweet in regards to its hero, Marge Gunderson, despite detailing the exploits of some other really nasty characters; and it’s a great looking film, despite being set in a snow-filled winter in Minnesota. Thin Ice feels very much like a film that wishes it could be more like Fargo, but it never really works out that way. It features quirky characters, down on their luck, that turn to crime in order to get ahead, but only find themselves in deeper and deeper trouble. It boils down to being a con-man film that really does not go anywhere exciting, regardless of whichever version one watches on this good looking Blu-ray disc. People may have to stick with me on this, but I, myself, have stuck with this Step Up franchise for no discernible reason, beyond the fact that the choreography has always been impressive. Despite the lack of Channing Tatum (who began as a bland, pretty face in the first Step Up and is now a hot commodity all over), the series has actually gotten ‘better’ with each entry…until now. Yes, Step Up Revolution has a similarly generic story and weak characters that serve as the same elements that we are not supposed to care about, but the other films seemed better. I was still more engaged with the previous entries and found the dances to be really involving. This film has some elaborate dance sequences and the 3D looks pretty good, but everything around those aspects feels even lazier this time around than normal. I don’t ask for a lot from these movies, but I do wish I was more entertained with this one. Continue reading ‘‘Step Up Revolution’ Is A Dance-tastic Step Down’

Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Jon Hamm star alongside Jennifer Westfeldt and Adam Scott in a daring and hilarious ensemble comedy about a close-knit circle of friends whose lives change once they have kids. The last two singles in the group (Westfeldt and Scott) observe the effect that kids have had on their friends’ relationships and wonder if there’s a better way to make it work. When they decide to have a child together and date other people, their unconventional “experiment” leads everyone in the group to question the nature of friendship, family and, above all, true love. Written and directed by Jennifer Westfeldt and also starring Chris O’Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns, Friends with Kids delivers the laughs and the heart from beginning to end! Director Scott Speer is the man in charge in this fourth go-around in the Step Up franchise. He picks up where Jon Chu’s third installment left off in 2010…sort of. What was arguably the best film in the series, Step Up 3, or Step Up 3D as it was originally called, is a tough one to top. Sure the acting is rather unnoticeable and the story was cliche, but here comes Speer’s version!

What’s it about? What does it mean? Who is that lovely young lady in the video? Hey, there are some questions best left unanswered. For now, enjoy Cruel Daze of Summer on Why So Blu and stay tuned for more Julien-K updates. Continue reading ‘Julien-K: Cruel Daze of Summer (Music Video)’

I don’t know what it is, but of the half dozen or so comic book titles that really, truly impress me this year, a third of those deal with the dearly departed. First it was IDW’s Grim Leaper. Now it’s National Comics’ (via DC) Eternity; the story of a 27-year old medical examiner who has one extremely unique talent.

I am all for a good comedy and fun & games, but I do also appreciate when the pieces of a film, no matter how initially scatterbrained, eventually work out within the realm of logic that said film has established. The Watch is very funny in various moments, because it features funny people getting to say and do funny things with each other, and I am sure the blooper reel is probably hilarious. That said, the film, as a whole, is really messy and does not come together in a way that could be considered clever or successful in a way that would make me find the film to be memorable. Bits of it work really well and put it in the league of Ghostbusters, but by the end, it really just turns out to be more like Evolution. It has been a strange series of events that have led to me missing several chances to actually see this movie, while it was in theaters, but it looks like I will finally be able to have the chance to see Best Exotic Marigold Hotel this coming fall, when it arrives on Blu-ray. Given the talented cast of older, English actors and coming from director John Madden, I have had a lot of interest in seeing this film, which centers around several seniors heading off to India for their retirement, due to various circumstances. I imagine it will have various levels of charm, while also making good use of the colorful scenery, but I will find out for sure, come this September.
