There are a handful of truly elite warriors in this world; South Korea’s Rock Marines, Britain’s Special Air Service, and the French Foreign Legion to name a few. But when it comes to the best of the best, look no further than the U.S. Navy SEALs. We’re going to cover the explosive (literally) action film Act of Valor featuring active duty Navy SEALs. Yes that calling card was promoted time and again with this film. Did it help or hurt the movie’s delivery? Yes.

Ladies and gentlemen, be alert. We are going to initiate a hard-target search for a fugitive in an ever-widening perimeter. We will wade through swamps, prowl Manhattan streets, search every house and doghouse. We’ll eat on the run, sleep tomorrow, watch our backs. And since Marshal Sam Gerard leads the hunt, we will experience suspense, action and daring twists every breathless step of the way. Returning to his Oscar-winning role from The Fugitive, Tommy Lee Jones is Gerard, joining an A-team including Wesley Snipes, Robert Downey Jr. and director Stuart Baird (Executive Decision) to deliver adrenaline-rush excitement. The suspect: armed, extremely dangerous, perhaps linked to a spy ring. The chase: highlighted by an out-of-control 727, a death match in a ship’s cargo hold, a 12-story plunge onto a moving train and more heart-pounding sequences. The movie: U.S. Marshals. Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan bring their New York Times best-selling series of novels, the Strain Trilogy, to Dark Horse Comics with an ongoing adventure that takes a terrifying spin on the vampire genre. Renowned comics creator David Lapham (Stray Bullets, Silverfish) and artist Mike Huddleston (The Coffin, Butcher Baker) join forces in this comic book adaptation unlike any other—bringing del Toro and Hogan’s vision to life in a story that casts a deadly plague over the whole of humanity. The Strain Volume 1, collecting issues #1–#6 of this ongoing series, is a horror story unlike any other! When a Boeing 777 lands at JFK International Airport and goes dark on the runway, the Centers for Disease Control, fearing a terrorist attack, calls in Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his team of expert biological-threat first responders. It must be difficult to approach a film like this from the perspective of a filmmaker who has done previous, similar work that is now considered a classic. It must also be difficult for someone to go in and see a film like this, knowing what one knows about said classic, the filmmaker, and the pedigree of people involved in its making. Prometheus is a film that began as a prequel to Alien, only to evolve into something different, yet still shares the same universe. It marks the return of director Ridley Scott to the realm of science fiction, but it certainly does not seem like he has run out of ideas. On the contrary, the biggest problem that he and his screenwriters have is the fact that Prometheus, while a visually gorgeous spectacle, is too full of ideas and too ambitious for its own good. It’s been 25 years since the action buddy film, Lethal Weapon, became a phenomenon in its genre and spawned a legacy of films on the heels of its success. Now Warner Home Video has debuted the ultimate Lethal Weapon Collection as a 5-Disc gift-set containing all four original theatrical releases in the series (Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2, Lethal Weapon 3 and Lethal Weapon 4). The franchise, directed by Richard Donner (Superman, Goonies) and starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as L.A. detectives Riggs and Murtaugh, is one of the most successful in film franchise history, with a worldwide box-office gross and home entertainment sales totaling more than $1 billion. The Lethal Weapon Collection includes four featurettes (released for the first time in the US) about the genesis, legacy and making of each film in the franchise. Also included are deleted scenes, outtakes and two music videos; one starring Sting and Eric Clapton. Lastly, also included are two hours of 2010 cast interviews with Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Rene Russo, Joe Pesci and Richard Donner. The magic is back!

If I had to rank my Top 3 “Most Anticipated” Films of 2012, Prometheus would have been a gut wrenching #4 choice. It’s not that I wasn’t really looking forward to it, but nothing will ever top my love for the Nolan’s Batman series, which I considered masterpieces, and Seth Grahame-Smith’s literary mash-up work, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. And oh yeah, there was that small tribe of insignificant Marvel superheroes too. What were they called? Oh yeah! The Avengers! So to say Prometheus didn’t have a little competition this year would be like saying peanut butter and chocolate don’t go together, BECAUSE THEY DO! One thing’s for certain ladies and gents, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for Prometheus to start rolling last Thursday night. I could not wait to take it all in…the science fiction…the breathtaking landscapes…and the ALIEN(s). Oops! Did I say too much? Come on, we’re all adults here. Let’s play nice. I promise, to keep this review spoiler-free. So let’s get this party started! What say you? Continue reading ‘Prometheus: The Truth Is Out There OR Is It? (Movie Review)’

Ridley Scott, director of’ Alien and Blade Runner, returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a new mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a mysterious journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race and to discover the intentions of an alien race who may or may not have mankind’s best interest in their plans. This animated action adventure Madagascar 3, the third movie in the series, is by far my favorite. It manages to effectively deliver laughs and enough exciting adventures to keep all the little ones entertained and giggling throughout its 95-minute run time. What a fun 3D summer movie for the whole family to see! I would totally go see it a second time!! Once again directed by Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath with the addition of Conrad Vernon, the series seems to be getting better with each movie. Looking for a way back to the New York Zoo, Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the Hippopotamus (Jada Pinkett-Smith) set out after escaping Africa. They have been left behind by the penguins and chimps as they need to obtain funds for their journey home. However, the penguins and chimps have a scam to win the money at a casino. Alex gets tired of waiting for them to return and decides that they need to go after them. Continue reading ‘Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – The New York Giants Are Back!!!’

They both love The Simpsons but that’s just an obvious pick. So Aaron Fink champions The Venture Brothers and David Freedman desperately wants to re-animate Drawn Together. What are your favorite animation “Hidden Gems”? THE VENTURE BROS is created and produced by Christopher McCulloch and stars the voices of Christopher McCulloch, James Urbaniak and Michael Sinterniklaas. DRAWN TOGETHER is created and produced by Matthew Silverstein, and Dave Jeser and stars Adam Carolla, Jess Harnell, Abbey McBride, Jack Plotnick, Tara Strong, and Cree Summer.

I’d been really interested in seeing The Innkeepers when I heard about the project and it being Ti West’s follow up to the excellent The House of the Devil. Spooky New England hotels, ghosts, demons, people crapping themselves in hotels where ghosts and demons live? Hell yeah! I should also make mention that I had already seen the film on VOD a couple of months (or weeks) before the Blu-ray, so I already knew what I was getting myself into. The question still remains: Did I like the film before AND after? The Blu-ray contains a couple of extras that the bare-bones VOD version did not. Maybe that will sweeten the deal a bit more? Read on and find out. Continue reading ‘The Innkeepers (Blu-ray Review)’

True Blood: The Complete Fourth Season finds Sookie embroiled in a love triangle and tangling with a charismatic witch; Lafayette, Tara, and Jesus get tempted with otherworldly powers; Jessica tries to adjust to domestic life, while Jason finds himself alone in were-panther territory, and Alcide is caught in the clutches of an old flame. As old alliances crumble and new relationships form, nobody’s safe when there’s magic in the air. Once again, HBO has put together another nice boxed set. Not only do their shows tend to look amazing but the physical box itself is usually high quality, with easily accessible discs. This also marks the first time a television series box set has included all three formats in one complete package. Additionally, previous seasons of the hit series will also be available on “Blu-ray with HBO Select” day and date with season four. The digital copy is redeemable via a provider of your choice: iTunes, Vudu, and Amazon, or an UltraViolet copy through supporting providers. His name is Django. The ‘D’ is silent. Alright ramblers, lets get ramblin’. If Brian can put up posts about the latest trailer for Step Up 4, then I guess I might as well put up a post about the latest from writer/director Quentin Tarantino. Django Unchained hits theaters this Christmas and it is easily one of my most anticipated films of the year. The film is a western (of sorts) that stars Academy Award winners Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz as a former slave and a German bounty hunter, who have teamed up to take down an evil plantation owner played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Of course, this being a Tarantino film, expect plenty of other genre-defying antics to come up as well. Continue on to see the first official trailer and some pictures from the upcoming film. I love Star Wars and I love Mel Brooks. Spaceballs is not necessarily a favorite film of mine, but it is one that I can say I have easily watched more than most of the films I have owned over the years. Now everyone gets a chance to celebrate it yet again in this upcoming Blu-ray release. The farce is strong in the “uproarious salute to science fiction” (The Hollywood Reporter) when SPACEBALLS: 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION blasts off on Blu-ray August 7 from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Comedy legend Mel Brooks leads an all-star cast of cutups including John Candy (Splash), Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters) and Bill Pullman (Ruthless People). Read on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release. Continue reading ‘Spaceballs 25th Anniversary Edition Arrives on Blu-ray August 7’

From Academy Award–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes John Carter – a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.
