True Blood: The Complete Fourth Season finds Sookie embroiled in a love triangle and tangling with a charismatic witch; Lafayette, Tara, and Jesus get tempted with otherworldly powers; Jessica tries to adjust to domestic life, while Jason finds himself alone in were-panther territory, and Alcide is caught in the clutches of an old flame. As old alliances crumble and new relationships form, nobody’s safe when there’s magic in the air. Once again, HBO has put together another nice boxed set. Not only do their shows tend to look amazing but the physical box itself is usually high quality, with easily accessible discs. This also marks the first time a television series box set has included all three formats in one complete package. Additionally, previous seasons of the hit series will also be available on “Blu-ray with HBO Select” day and date with season four. The digital copy is redeemable via a provider of your choice: iTunes, Vudu, and Amazon, or an UltraViolet copy through supporting providers. His name is Django. The ‘D’ is silent. Alright ramblers, lets get ramblin’. If Brian can put up posts about the latest trailer for Step Up 4, then I guess I might as well put up a post about the latest from writer/director Quentin Tarantino. Django Unchained hits theaters this Christmas and it is easily one of my most anticipated films of the year. The film is a western (of sorts) that stars Academy Award winners Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz as a former slave and a German bounty hunter, who have teamed up to take down an evil plantation owner played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Of course, this being a Tarantino film, expect plenty of other genre-defying antics to come up as well. Continue on to see the first official trailer and some pictures from the upcoming film. I love Star Wars and I love Mel Brooks. Spaceballs is not necessarily a favorite film of mine, but it is one that I can say I have easily watched more than most of the films I have owned over the years. Now everyone gets a chance to celebrate it yet again in this upcoming Blu-ray release. The farce is strong in the “uproarious salute to science fiction” (The Hollywood Reporter) when SPACEBALLS: 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION blasts off on Blu-ray August 7 from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Comedy legend Mel Brooks leads an all-star cast of cutups including John Candy (Splash), Rick Moranis (Ghostbusters) and Bill Pullman (Ruthless People). Read on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release. Continue reading ‘Spaceballs 25th Anniversary Edition Arrives on Blu-ray August 7’

From Academy Award–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes John Carter – a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). John Carter is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands. If at first you don’t succeed try again, right? Wait a minute, the first Ghost Rider film grossed almost 230 million dollars worldwide, what do you mean try again? It was a box-office success even though it was garbage. Well, there are forces out there that deemed there be a sequel to the film, or in this case, a re-boot, so there you go. Honestly, I didn’t even know this film was a re-boot, because if you watch it all the way through it plays fine as a sequel. Anyways, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance are directing duo madmen Neveldine/Taylor’s (Crank, Crank 2, Gamer) latest project and first foray into directing-for-hire features. How has the demon biker with flame, skull, and a motorcycle on fire fare this time out? Will it ride off into the darkness as it should or will its flame be extinguished early on? Given the visual wonderment seen throughout this darker take on the Snow White fairy tale, it is too bad there is not more to praise in other regards. Snow White and the Huntsman is a fairly empty film that has plenty to show off on the outside, given the high budget and imaginations at work to create rich fantasy worlds, but practically nothing inside when it comes to showing off the characters involved or a story that makes more sense. This would be less bothersome if the film was at least fun, but it has very little joy to share, instead keeping things quite grim throughout. Despite good looking visuals and a good looking cast (in more ways than one), Snow White is more or less a bad apple. Continue reading ‘‘Snow White’ Goes Dark’

Well I did not think I would be writing a review that would come to the defense of Piranha 3D, but its god-awful sequel Piranha 3DD certainly necessitates some attempt to separate the two. While one may scoff at the 2010 horror-remake, that film at least knew how to deliver on almost every level that it tried to. Piranha 3DD fails spectacularly at being anything that resembles horror, comedy, sexy, or basic, intentional entertainment. The film is only a step or two up from those terrible excuses for parody films (Meet the Spartans, Disaster Movie, etc.) and really requires the aid of some friends who want to equally try and make some good out of a film that is so bad. Still, try as we did, nothing good came from what we saw, as Piranha 3DD only delivered one ‘D’, which stands for dumb. Continue reading ‘‘Piranha’ Doubles The Ds And Lowers The Intelligence’

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power. The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders. The second Snow White movie of the year releases on Friday June 1st. The first, Mirror Mirror, was the lighter side of the story, with Snow White and The Huntsman certainly representing the dark side. Continue reading ‘Snow White and the Huntsman (Movie Review)’
