Ever been caught up in a “Bad Romance”? Nah. I didn’t think so. Neither have I. [cough…cough…bullsh1t!] Just when I was feeling blue and alone on Valentine’s Day this past week, Tim Sullivan made my day so much better! How you ask? Well I’ll tell you how. He provided members of the press an opportunity to check out and access the official soundtrack from his segment, I Was A Teenage Werebear, from 2011’s hit horror anthology Chillerama (see our Blu-ray review here and our theatrical Comic-Con 2011 review here), offering me an alternative kind of romance that I couldn’t have been happier about. Hey! Werebears need love too…especially this werebear. So now it’s time to purge my urge indeed as I talk about all things Chillerama: I Was A Teenage Werebear – The Original Soundtrack. Let’s start off with an obscure reference – The tagline for the mid-90s comic book film, The Phantom was “Slam Evil”. In Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Johnny Blaze, aka The Rider, doesn’t just slam evil, he literally sucks it in, chews on it, spits it out, then gives you the finger, as he drives off on his Hellcycle. Let it be said right now, if you’re seeking a film full of constant clarity and touches of nuance, this sequel to (the inferior) Ghost Rider will not be for you. However, if you want a film that has Nic Cage dialed to 11 and pissing fire, Idris Elba as a drunken French priest going on shooting rampages, and the Highlander himself – Christopher Lambert as a tattooed monk with a long scimitar, then this new Ghost Rider film, from the directing duo behind the Crank films, is one you may want to check out. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), star in The Sunset Limited, a searing film that explores the ongoing debate between belief and atheism, afterlife and nihilism, salvation and suicide. The Sunset Limited mixes humor and pathos to examine the relationship between strangers brought together by desperate circumstances. The men lock themselves in a passionate philosophical exchange of opposing views, each seeking the language and inspiration that will convert the other. Over the holiday season, audiences everywhere had a chance to see the latest film from writer/director Cameron Crowe, We Bought A Zoo, starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. It was an incredibly sweet story, almost too sweet (review HERE), but one that was certainly a fitting film for families to go out and see together. And now families will get their chance to see it again or for the first time. Coming April 3rd, We Bought A Zoo hits Blu-ray and DVD and is loaded with over 2 hours of bonus materials. I can at least say that Cameron Crowe always supplies some amount of earnestness in his features, and We Bought A Zoo definitely delivers that much. Read on to learn even more about this upcoming release. Continue reading ‘We Bought a Zoo Roars onto Blu-ray & DVD April 3’

Here we are once again bringing you the latest in Blu-ray reviews and as luck would have it – our second silent film review in a day. What are the odds? The Phantom of the Opera has hit the Blu-ray format in a nice package that contain three different versions of the film. There are two 1929 reissue versions along with the original 1925 version in it’s entirety. We’ll get into it some more in the review. Oh, and just to reiterate, this is the ORIGINAL Phantom of the Opera, not the recent Joel Schumacher version with Gerard Butler. This stars the man of a thousand faces: Lon Chaney Sr. With that out of the way let’s see how The Phantom of the Opera stacks up on Blu-ray. Vamos! It’s been nearly thirty years since Giorgio Moroder’s somewhat controversial version of Metropolis was released in theaters. It’s also been quite a few years since the long out of print VHS and Laserdisc copies went out of print and until then most of the curious fans out there had to settle for awful bootleg copies and cost prohibitive laserdisc copies. That’s all over now, because the good folks over at Kino Lorber have gone to the vault and dusted off the film for a high definition release. Now you can experience for yourself what all the hoopla was about all those many years ago. Geez, it was 1984, yo! Anyways, let’s get our groove with Giorgio Moroder’s Metropolis! Growing up, I remember being enamored by Mad magazine, particularly one regular strip in particular, Spy vs. Spy. Do you remember those? Those black and white characters had me in stitches every time I read their strip and I was overjoyed when they were eventually commercialized into everything from an animated television series to trading cards and video games. The reason I mention these crudely animated little fellows is because they are exactly what I thought about the first time I saw the theatrical trailer for This Means War. And it also meant the return of McG. In the eyes of the critics out there beside myself, I wonder what fairs worse? I’m not going to lie. This Means War looked like a fun little movie, but it didn’t win me over instantly. What did was the controversy behind it. I’m referring to how it went from losing the appeal of it being labeled a Rated-R comedy by the MPAA and how it was excised down to a PG-13 cut. I know it sounds strange, but as much as I write, I hardly ever read. Reading to me is a luxury that is afforded by time, that which I have not much of. Boo! But it was almost two years ago when I came across a book title while glancing through an issue of Entertainment Weekly that right then and there I knew I had to have. That title was none other than Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. All I have to say is wow! I loved it so much I did what I never did before…I wrote a review about it (make sure you check it out here). Okay. Maybe that’s not too special, but it was my first book review ever. That’s something to be proud of, right? Well I think so! Continue reading ‘Get It While It’s Hot! We’re going to take it way back to the early 90’s for our next review in which actor Denzel Washington and Director Spike Lee team up to bring the story of Malcolm X to the big screen. Spike Lee’s grand opus about the controversial figurehead of the nation of Islam in the 60’s has finally made its way to the Blu-ray format in a deluxe edition brimming with extras and even a collector’s book. The film clocks in at over three hours, so will the origins of Malcolm X be a fascinating tale of intrigue, deception, and murder or will it be a bloated mess of a film that is too self indulgent for its own good? We shall see. Continue reading ‘Malcolm X (Blu-ray Review)’

It was only a matter of time before FX guru and Star Wars creator George Lucas jumped on the 3D bandwagon. This past Friday, Episode I: The Phantom Menace made its arrival in theaters. With massive cardboard standups in cinemas months ago promoting the upcoming release/re-release, hopes were high that Lucas would deliver on the conflicted visual technology. At the end of the day, however, the only thing that was high was the ticket price.

I’d caught word about a little zombie tale called The Dead due to it being released on Blu-ray in the UK a few months ago. I almost imported it myself, but decided to wait a bit. Once the announcement by Anchor Bay was made on them acquiring it for distribution here in the states, I jumped at the chance to review it. That was actually a good thing due to it saving me twice what it normally would cost me to import, and it being a blind buy. I had seen the trailer for The Dead and thought it looked decent enough. Zombies in Africa with a hint of Resident Evil 5 – what’s not to like? Well, that’s what we’re going to find out. Continue reading ‘The Dead (Blu-ray Review)’
