Anuvahood (DVD Review)

Up next on DVD, we have Revolver Entertainment’s Anuvahood (Another Hood) which is a UK urban comedy film that may or may not bring to light how it goes down on the block aka the ghetto or the projects. Anuvahood is an interesting selection for coverage, because it hits closer to home. I am from the block, so you know how I do it. I don’t mince words and I don’t take any foolishness. Kind of like some of the characters in the film, but this is from the UK, bruv, so you know it’s going to go down a bit differently than your average American counterpart. Will Anuvahood sink or swim in the world of urban comedies? That notion is a bit vexing, innit though?  Continue reading ‘Anuvahood (DVD Review)’

‘Tower Heist’ Is Annoyingly Entertaining

The title of this film, as bland as it is, certainly cuts to the chase.  This is a simple heist comedy that is fairly entertaining, even as it slightly underuses the talents of its ensemble cast.  Brett Ratner, a director better known for his reputation as a hack director responsible for some entertaining successes (Rush Hour 1 & 2, Red Dragon) and some other not so entertaining ones (Rush Hour 3, X-Men: The Last Stand), found his way to bringing his workman-like skills to a pretty forgettable, but enjoyable film.  Tower Heist is problematic in the way it attempts to take a very goofy comedy and add more significance and emotion to its story than it should have, but it still functions as a tolerable crowd pleaser. Scary Movie 3 (Blu-ray Review)

There are countless reasons why I should think of this movie as low-brow, stupid, and idiotic attempt at a spoof film. However, I found myself laughing out loud throughout the entire movie, from the side-splittingly hilarious opening titles to the “twist” ending. Along with being a major improvement over the painful Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2, Scary Movie 3 manages to produce sincerely comical laughs. You can further experience the laughter of this with Scary Movie 3.5, the all-new extended cut of the original, packing in more laughs and “scares” into an already fun film.   Continue reading ‘Scary Movie 3 (Blu-ray Review)’

Procol Harum: Live at the Union Chapel (Blu-ray Review)

So, I sat down to watch the latest Eagle Rock concert movie sent to me, which is Procol Harum: Live at the Union Chapel, and was skeptical about this one. I had literally no prior knowledge to who Procol Harum was, or what there style of music was (which is actually a great tactic going into something fresh), yet was pleasantly surprised with this British rock band. Aside from the lack of special features, Procol Harum: Live at the Union Chapel is a great Blu-ray.  Eagle Rock continues to impress with their amount of Blu-ray output – they seem to have a genuine support for high definition, and we like that.  Continue reading ‘Procol Harum: Live at the Union Chapel (Blu-ray Review)’

Toy Story 3 3D / 2D (Blu-ray Review)

Andy is preparing to depart for college, leaving his loyal toys troubled about their uncertain future. When a mix-up lands them at Sunnyside Daycare, the untamed tots with their sticky little fingers do not play nice, so it’s all for one and one for all as plans for the great escape get underway. More than a few new faces – some plastic, some plush – join the adventure, including Barbie’s counterpart, Ken, a thespian hedgehog named Mr. Pricklepants, and a strawberry-scented teddy bear called Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear. Toy Story 3 dominated the box office when it was released (over 1 billion dollars!) and is currently ranked as the 5th biggest worldwide movie of all time.  More importantly to me, is that this movie was made with care and love and continues the ongoing storyline in a funny yet poignant manner.  Buzzing with hours of bonus features — and now on Disney Blu-ray 3D, Toy Story 3 is an unforgettable family experience.

Salvage (DVD Review)

Revolver Entertainment has graced us with some horror DVDS for coverage and the first title that Why So Blu will be reviewing is something by the name of Salvage. Salvage comes to us from the UK and we are big UK horror fans here, so it’s no surprise that this title would be the first one on the to-do list. I’d never heard of Salvage before, but seeing all of the positive praise given to it on the DVD box I was actually kind of excited to tackle the project head on. That, and it’s Halloween, so why not indeed. How will Salvage do? Will it sink or swim? Will we be able to salvage it? Okay, that was a bad pun. Come on in and let’s see what we can see.  Continue reading ‘Salvage (DVD Review)’

Torso (Blu-ray Review)

Up next, and perfectly fitting for the Halloween season we have some giallo horror brought to you from the fine folks over at Blue Underground where the horror train keeps on chugging along. Giallo, for a lack of a better word, refers to “thrillers,” but the term often lends itself to the Italian way of doing things. Dario Argento’s early stuff is all horror, but with a giallo twist. Torso can be considered a giallo horror thriller. In fact, I’d go far as to say that Torso is taken straight from the pages of of the Dario Argento playbook. Will it live up to its reputation or will it be a silly knock off? Let’s take a trip to Italy and find out!  Continue reading ‘Torso (Blu-ray Review)’
