Mahna Mahna…excuse me, Saturday at Disney’s D23 Expo was a big day indeed. I have already covered The Avengers presentation, which was a way for plenty of people to geek out. I have also written about Pixar, which has big, ambitious plans for their future as well. This whole film presentation was a part of the D23 Arena panel, titled “Building Worlds: Inside the Walt Disney Studios,” which was a way for Disney to bring out the various cast and crew members involved in all of their upcoming films and show new footage. Among those was a sneak peak at the upcoming Muppets film, due for release this Thanksgiving. Given my belief that Muppets can bring out the joy in practically anyone, I was plenty happy to learn even more about this film. Collecting the first twelve episodes from the show’s second season, the two-disc Batman: The Brave and The Bold Season Two, Part One DVD collection is the latest home video release for the acclaimed Batman: The Brave and The Bold animated series. This is the first of two planned DVD releases to collect the entire 26-episode second season of Batman: The Brave and The Bold with the next one scheduled to be released in early 2012. The show has benefited from some great guest stars including: Morena Baccarin, Xander Berkeley, Clancy Brown, Jeffrey Combs, Tim Conway, Olivia d’Abo, Dana Delany, Michael Dorn, Ioan Gruffudd, Neil Patrick Harris, Tippi Hedren, John Michael Higgins, Carl Lumbly, Stephen Root, Ron Perlman and a ton more! Top Gear‘s a show that I’ve been hearing about for years, one that I’ve been told time and again that I’d really enjoy if I “just gave it a chance”, but one that I’d never actually given a chance to: I’d seen the series pop up in my Netflix Instant queue on more than one occasion– beckoning me with its promises of silly-ass stunts, British humor, and car-worship– but I never quite found the time to give it a whirl. And so, when the fine folks at WhySoBlu.com offered to pass the latest season of the series along to me (on my beloved, razor-sharp Blu-ray format, no less) I was happy to take it off their hands. Finally, I was going to get a chance to see what everyone’s been raving about. So, did Top Gear turn out to be a all buzz and no bang, or did it turn out that this long-running series had earned its esteemed reputation? (Hint: there are sixteen seasons of Top Gear). Among those was a large look at what is next for Pixar Animation Studios. Pixar Chief John Lasseter was on hand during this portion to present all of the upcoming Pixar projects, with appearances by those involved as well as a special sneak peak at some of these upcoming titles. Hearing not only about what is the next Pixar film, but getting a look at projects up to 3 years away in advance was certainly something special. When you think about it, horror movies are a lot like the hamburgers you get at McDonald’s. McDonald’s seems to have no qualms about the fact that just about everyone agrees their food sucks, mainly because people continue consuming it. They take the cheapest, weakest ingredients and mash ’em together to create a product that– while hungover or drunk– might seem like a good idea, but one that loses a lot of its appeal once the booze wears off and common sense kicks in. Similarly, studios have always treated horror films as a dirty little (not-so-secret) secret, churning out titles (all of which are destined to end up cluttering the clearance bin at Wal-Mart) with alarming rapidity simply because they know that the ill-informed, the drunk, and the hungover will always have an appetite for them. Whereas McDonald’s “cheap ingredients” might include grade-D beef and more than a little rat feces, studios’ “cheap ingredients” include grade-D actors and…well, more than a little rat feces. All of this is a very longwinded– and entirely unnecessary– was of getting to this: when you’re trolling the bargain bins and bottom-shelves of the world, you never know what you’re gonna get. Saturday at Disney’s D23 Expo was a big day, mainly due to the massive film presentation in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena. While Notable films including The Avengers, John Carter, and Pixar’s Brave made their mark, a few other films were on hand as well, including an upcoming Disney animated feature called Wreck-It Ralph. I would have to honestly say that besides The Avengers and Brave, I believe Wreck-It Ralph was the film I was most impressed with, having heard about it for the first time. It has a clever premise, some great talent involved, and looks to be a lot fun. Aside from a few films such as Tangled and Bolt, I don’t believe the CG animated Disney films without the Pixar name attached have been entirely successful in the past. While there are plenty of other things to eventually write about concerning Disney’s D23 Expo, which took place at the Anaheim Convention Center this past weekend, one of the most anticipated moments was easily the debut of basically anything related to the upcoming Avengers film. As many keeping track of this sort of news know, Disney skipped out on having a big show at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, with intentions to save their big presentations for the D23 Expo. As Disney currently owns Marvel, this meant holding back The Avengers as well. Well the time has now come, and The Avengers did make an appearance at the Expo. Nearly the entire cast was present on the arena stage, and they came with an entire scene from the film, as well as a sizzle real of new footage. Through a great deal of planning, caution and artistic development, the home of Superman and Batman will reset 52 of its titles, many of which are already deep into the hundreds, to issue 1. What would cause the company to create such a mammoth undertaking and erase the history of so many of its long-running titles?

Conan the Barbarian gives the viewer everything that they would be expecting…if they did not have their expectations very high. The movie has plenty of macho ridiculousness and is filled to the brim with violence and CG blood and gore. It is not a good movie by any means, but I did laugh a lot. Once you see your lead character literally born on the battlefield, delivered via C-section by your father’s own sword, there are few things to do but have a good laugh at the whole thing. Really, the only question I have to ask is why did this movie need to carry on for nearly two hours? I guess it was to ensure the delivery of all the “aaaarrrrggghhhs” in the movie. I am happy when my optimism is met with pleasing results. The idea of remaking the 1985 vampire horror/comedy Fright Night seemed like fairly solid idea in my eyes. There’s a structure to that story that could easily serve as a template for a modern update. I can’t say that I was initially sold on the trailer, as I thought the original’s tone may have been lost in the shuffle; however the buzz that was building and the panel I saw at San Diego Comic Con kept me hopeful. Now having seen it, I can easily say this new take on Fright Night was one of the more enjoyable films I have seen this summer in terms of having a fun, R-rated time at the movies, with both thrills and laughs being spread around. All good things come to those who wait. That’s what they say, right? Well, I’ve been patiently waiting for my favorite director of all time to make a full feature film for about ten years now and here we are ten years later with the master of horror’s newest feature film entitled The Ward. After a couple of false starts, mainly due to an overseas error on the import Blu-ray release, we were subjected to a Fall delay. Then the flood gates opened up and a domestic distributor stepped up and took charge. John Carpenter’s The Ward had it’s VOD premiere last month (or two) along with a limited theatrical release across the United States, before finally being released on the might Blu-ray format. All of this within a 2-3 month time span. I could not be happier. So how was the movie? How was the Blu-ray? Grab some adult diapers and enter if you dare. John Carpenter’s The Ward is now admitting. While it’s not quite The Terminator, remaking any Schwarzenegger movie is always going to add a great bit of skepticism amongst fans of the original. Case in point, the 2011 version of Conan the Barbarian. In the 21st century trend of Hollywood remaking films, film execs apparently figured this would be another cult classic worthy of refreshing. Let me start out by saying that films are out of my expertise, I am an in your face gamer. However, I was fortunate enough to attend an advance screening of the film in 3-D. I would much rather see a film the regular way not only do I think 3-D is stupid but it’s a waste of money but again it was free, so who am I to argue. Fright Night is a remake of the 1985 Tom Holland film of the same name. You wanted some non-sparkling vampires, well now you got them! Priest is the latest graphic novel-to-film-adaptation to hit the big screen with a pretty strong and familiar cast. The original graphic novel is Korean and was created by Hyung Ming-woo. The cast of Priest is comprised of Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q., Stephen Moyer, and Christopher Plummer. Now with a cast like that how does Priest fare on Blu-ray? Will you be able to sink your fangs into Priest or will it have you craving for the early morning dawn to turn you into ash?
