‘Win Win’ Scores A Blu-Ray Release This August!

Win Win is one of the films that entered into theaters, in limited release, during the early part of 2011.  I was a big fan of the film (find my review HERE), and soon everyone will be able enjoy it in the comfort of their own home.  On August 30, 2011, Win Win comes to Blu-ray and DVD.  Still one of the best reviewed films of the year, Win Win stars Paul Giamatti as a lawyer who moonlights as a high school wrestling coach.  The film is a comedy-drama that revolves around Giamatti’s character struggling with maintaining his law firm and coaching a losing team.  Things take a turn when he becomes the guardian of sorts for a troubled teen with natural talent.  The film co-stars Amy Ryan, Jeffrey Tambor, Bobby Carnivale, and newcomer Alex Shaffer in this delightful and… winning film. Get the Spiderman Trilogy on Blu-ray for $30 and Free Shipping!

While I realize that many people didn’t like Spiderman 3, this is still a great deal for all three Spiderman Blu-rays.  Personally, I loved the first two and liked the third and I think most people can agree that Spiderman 2 was one of the best (if not the best) superhero movies ever made.  All three movies were directed by Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire was an inspired choice to play Peter Parker/Spiderman.  With other roles played by Alfred Molina, Willem Dafoe, James Franco, Thomas Haden Church, Topher Grace, and Kirsten Dunst, these movies are packed with good people!  If you haven’t upgraded your trilogy to Blu-ray yet, this is the perfect time to do it! The Cat O’Nine Tails (Blu-ray Review)

Dario Argento, be thy name!  Why So Blu and Blue Underground are back to bring you even more from the Italian master of horror in The Cat O’Nine Tails.  The Cat O’Nine Tails is Dario Argento’s second film in the so-called “Animal” trilogy, but unlike his “Three Mothers” trilogy later on you don’t really need to see these films in any sequential order.  They’re also referred to animal, because each contains a particular animal in the title of the film.  The first one is called The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, then The Cat O’Nine Tails, and finally Four Flies On Grey Velvet. No, none of these films deal with any animals either.  They’re also NOT horror films in the traditional sense.  Argento didn’t really get into the traditional horror theme until 1975 with Deep Red. Argento’s earlier work is classified as “giallo,” meaning thriller.  Okay, so without any more hesitation let’s dig into The Cat O’Nine Tails on Blu-ray!  Continue reading ‘The Cat O’Nine Tails (Blu-ray Review)’

Louie – The Complete First Season (Blu-ray Review)

From the inventive imagination of Louis C.K., Louie puts a spotlight on Louis C.K.’s everyday ordeals, his quest to find love and his pursuit of humor.  Each episode features a scripted story and a mix of his stand-up comedy, which is original material for the series.  The single-camera comedy is shot entirely in New York and features a unique mix of Louis C.K.’s stand-up comedy and scripted stories.  Louis C.K. serves as executive producer, writer, director and editor for the series, which is a fairly impressive feat especially considering how good the show is. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman and 2011 Golden Globe® Award-winner Katey Sagal, “Sons of Anarchy” Season Three is FX’s adrenalized drama about a notorious outlaw motorcycle club intent on protecting their sheltered small town against encroaching drug dealers, corporate developers and overzealous law officers. The club is equally determined to protect their ruthless and illegally thriving arms business.  Hunnam stars as Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller, a man whose love for the brotherhood is tested by his growing apprehension for its lawlessness. Katey Sagal stars as Gemma Teller Morrow, Jax’s force-of-nature mother, who along with Ron Perlman as Clarence ‘Clay’ Morrow, Jax’s stepfather and MC president, have their own darker vision for the club.   Chaos and confusion reign after Jax’s infant son is kidnapped and Gemma is framed for murder.  Continue reading ‘‘Sons of Anarchy’ Season Three Rides in on Blu-ray August 30th’

Wake Wood (Blu-ray Review)

With 2011 stinkers like Sucker Punch and Thor (IMO) out there, I don’t get as excited about upcoming films as I used to, but one press release, I did not so long ago, really peaked my curiosity.   After watching the movie’s trailer I found myself actually looking forward to a film other than The Hangover: Part II.   Basically, the film’s logline did me in.   It simply reads: GRIEF-STRICKEN PARENTS TRY TO BRING THEIR DAUGHTER BACK FROM THE DEAD IN A THRILLER FROM THE MOST FAMOUS NAME IN HORROR.  Now dissected, there’s a lot in that logline for me to love.   You have a story about bringing someone back from the dead.   I’m always fascinated about that subject, as I want to learn how to do it myself one day.   You have a tale about grief-stricken parents.  What kind of person can’t sympathize with that?   And finally, you have the last line that tells you this film comes from the most famous name in horror.  Now come one!   Admit it.   Like mine was, your curiosity is peaked to the max already, isn’t it?   I can’t be the only one! All good things must come to an end, so here is the final Blu-ray music review brought to you by Why So Blu and Eagle Rock Entertainment.  It is the David Byrne concert documentary entitled Ride, Rise, Roar. American: The Bill Hicks Story (Blu-ray Review)

Getting into this disc, I was aware who comedian Bill Hicks was, but I had not watched much of his stand up.  Now consistently ranked high on lists concerning the top stand up comedians of all time, Bill Hicks unfortunately passed away in 1994 at the age of 32, due to pancreatic cancer.  Hicks was known for evolving his comedy act into a much darker showcase of his humor, where he developed lots of controversial material involving social commentary in regards to issues like consumerism and pop culture in general, as well as literally challenging the audience during his shows.  This film is a documentary about his life and evolution as a comedian, featuring lots of archival footage and interviews with those closest to him. A Little Brightest Day, A Little Blackest Night, ‘Green Lantern’ Doesn’t Quite Get It Right

It is sad when a movie, capable of being better than its actual results, goes down the inevitable path of disappointment.  Initial footage of Green Lantern was met with lukewarm reactions.  The completely computer generated costume never seemed to click with the masses.  Only the power of Ryan Reynolds’ charisma and the intrigue that stems from seeing a live action Green Lantern using imagination-based abilities seemed to be giving people hope.  I had remained cautiously optimistic in anticipation of the film’s release, but alas, despite a lot of entertaining and well put together portions, the film did not end up working for me as a whole. Robin of Sherwood Set 1 (Blu-ray Review)

Combining elements of history, myth and magic with some action, Robin of Sherwood: Set 1 has arrived on Blu-ray with all 13 episodes from Series 1 and 2.  Marking the series’ first Blu-ray release, this presentation of the 1980’s British series comes digitally remastered and presented in stunning high definition with over eight hours of bonus material .  Shot entirely on location in England’s castles and countryside, this set brings the centuries-old legend to vivid life.  Broadcast on PBS and Showtime as Robin Hood, the ensemble cast includes Michael Praed (Dynasty) as Robin of Loxley, Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Departed) as seething-mad Will Scarlet, and Nickolas Grace (Brideshead Revisited) as the greedy, conniving Sheriff of Nottingham. Battle: Los Angeles (Blu-ray Review)

Much like my Blu-ray review of last year’s Burlesque (see here), I know I’m going to get bashed here.  For some reason, the critics didn’t receive Battle: Los Angeles too well.  Well la deed da.  What the f#$k do they know?  I guess they are all dead inside and truly don’t know how to have a good time by letting go and escaping reality for a little bit.  This movie never claimed to be another Platoon or Saving Private Ryan, but instead it sought out to do just what 1996’s Independence Day did, captivate and entertain audiences with its non-stop alien warfare and adrenalized action.  On those levels, I believe very much that it succeeded. Battle: Los Angeles has been one of my most anticipated film this year ever since I saw the panel at last year’s Comic-Con (see here).  Is that hardcore or what?  Ha ha.  I really don’t care if you think it’s hardcore or not.  That’s just filler to make this first paragraph longer so it looks good on the web page.
