My boy is all over the place nowadays! You see, I discovered him. Yep. That’s right. I discovered Bradley Cooper. I remember telling my wife when we used to watch Alias that Bradley Cooper was going to be a big star one day. She didn’t believe me. I’m always right. Remember that. LOL. Anyway, here’s a movie I missed in the theaters, but not for long. The action-packed thrills are Limitless on Blu-ray this July 19th. The Blu-ray features the theatrical and unrated cut, an alternate ending and more. Check out the short press release below from Twentieth Century Fox and pre-order yours now! Recently, Director DJ Caruso was kind enough to to spend a couple of hours answering questions about his new movie I Am Number Four. He not only answered questions about that move but also discussed other projects like the long delayed Y: The Last Man and whether or not that will ever happen and if he is still involved with that. Caruso also shares his thoughts about working in the science fiction medium and also talks about his upcoming plans and what he is currently looking forward to.

Cartoon Network has released Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle on DVD for your viewing pleasure. This is a 2 disc DVD set containing 10 episodes of the insanely popular kids television show. I should post this disclaimer: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle is actually PART 2 of the first season. I say that, because nowhere on the package will you find that information. This is somewhat of a blunder, because viewers will start off at episode eleven and will wonder what happened in episodes 1-10. This set contains episodes 11-20, so we’ll have to work with what we’ve got. Let’s get to it. Continue reading ‘Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Power Struggle (DVD Review)’

Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the simultaneous June 7 DVD and Blu-Ray release, through its wholly-owned Eagle Vision subsidiary, of Miles From Memphis: Live At The Pantages Theatre by Sheryl Crow. Featuring 18-songs in high definition, DTS 5.1 Surround Sound, the 2-hour+ release captures a standout show at this pristine art deco Hollywood venue. [MSRP $14.98 for DVD, $19.98 for Blu-ray]. Filmed in the Fall of 2010, the show captures the talented singer/songwriter—touring in support of her 100 Miles From Memphis album—fronting a powerhouse 9 piece band that swings through the best tracks from the record, and reinvigorates fan favorites with a soulful Memphis flavor. And there’s a little Motown in the mix too, with Crow’s 1994 megahit “All I Wanna Do” extended with a jam on Marvin Gaye’s classic “Got To Give It Up”, and a joyous rendition of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”. I got into the television show True Blood much the same way I do with most everything else in my life. I’m a sucker for brilliant marketing. I’m a salesman’s wet dream I think you get the picture. Although I’m a huge fan of vampire lore, it was the seductive lips dripping with blood on the cover art of True Blood Season 1 that were responsible for me blind buying it. I knew a little bit about the show and it’s onscreen sexual energy and eroticism, but it was ultimately a drawing that did me in. If that’s not brilliant marketing, then I’m not sure what to call it. Naturally, I fell in love with the show. How could I not? Vampires and sexy sirens make the perfect ingredient for my late night premium cable viewing. So I guess it goes without saying, I jumped at the chance to review The Complete Third Season Blu-ray set of the HBO hit series. And that’s why we are all here. Let’s get it started! Will Ferrell headlining a limited release comedic drama is not the sort of film that is going to stir a ton of interest from audiences that are happy with seeing him be loud and boisterous, but that does not mean the film should be overlooked. Ferrell is very good in a role that does not require most of his usual strengths. I do not find it surprising, as most comedic actors are usually very talented when it comes to drama. As far as the film goes, it is a bit of a slow burn and it falls into some of the trappings of these types of arthouse theater films, but it tells a good story. While it does hit a number of comedic beats, this is a drama about a man who has stumbled many times in his life and is finally finding some clarity. When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they decide to get out of town and quickly board a south-bound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the two newest and homeliest members of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect… until they meet an unlucky in love singer (Marilyn Monroe) who makes them both want to break their cover. This madcap farce was nominated for six Academy Awards and was later voted the Greatest American Comedy Film of All Time by the American Film Institute in 2000. The film did win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Comedy and Marilyn Monroe won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in Musical or Comedy, and Jack Lemmon won as well for Best Actor in Musical or Comedy.

MGM through 20th Century Fox is releasing a series of films that have been repackaged into their version of a digibook. The Terminator is one of these films. On the heels of its 30th anniversary The Terminator has been given this digibook treatment, but what else is packaged with the Blu-ray? Is it a special edition, does it come with the fabled restored print that Lowry Digital (rumored) completed some time back? All of these questions and more will be answered as you take a trip with us back to 1984 and see where it all began. We’re also really happy to be bringing this Terminator review to masses in general for the first time. It’s a been quite a few years since it debuted on Blu-ray. Enjoy! As if it were not cool enough to be having westerns entering successfully back into theaters, the chance to see new samurai films made with the technology of today is equally exciting. Better yet is the fact that I can appreciate a film that has clearly been inspired by samurai films of the past, notably the work of Akira Kurosawa, which manage to practically apply the type of mood and pacing appropriate for such a film. Furthermore, add a fantastic action sequence that lasts nearly a third of the film’s running time. Legendary Japanese director Takashi Miike is certainly no slouch when it comes to filmmaking, and while he may be more known in the U.S. for his cult status as an ultra-violent horror/action film director, his talents easily serve him well here in creating an old fashioned samurai story, using modern sensibilities. All movies related to exorcisms will undoubtedly have to answer to one question – was it as good as the Exorcist? In this case, the answer is definitely no, but it’s not a complete waste of time either. I’m glad I got the chance to watch it and I enjoyed the film. I really liked the overall feel and atmosphere of the movie. It was serious, dark, Catholic, and it’s set in Rome. As a Catholic myself, I find all things Roman Catholic to be solemn and to be respected. Maybe that’s why I’m willing to buy into this film more than many other reviewers might. As a Catholic child I was often told that movies related to exorcism were not to be watched as it would make a person more susceptible to possession. It’s possible that the lingering fears from an admittedly lapsed Catholic have me thinking this film is creepy even before it starts. Continue reading ‘The Rite (Blu-ray Review)’

It’s DTV (Direct to Video) week here at Why So Blu where we bring you more than just your average popular release on Blu-ray; we’ve got DTV material too! In this installment we will bring you Sniper: Reloaded which is the fourth film in the Sniper quadrilogy that started with actor Tom Berenger in the lead way back in 1993. To be completely honest I have not seen parts two and three, so I can’t comment on those. In fact I don’t remember much about the original Sniper film either. How will the latest installment in the dueling sniper franchise stack up to the original? Stay down, watch your step, and come on in. Continue reading ‘Sniper: Reloaded (Blu-ray Review)’

The last thing you want in a summer blockbuster is to be bored. Unfortunately, the fun that has previously been a driving point in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise seems to have just about run out. I suppose giving an opinion on the franchise seems appropriate, given that this is supposedly a new start for the series. As far as I am concerned, the previous ‘Pirates’ films have not steered me wrong. They all share the same problems (overlong and overly plotted), but there is a sense of fun and imagination that I have greatly admired throughout. This latest installment of the series manages to just feel long, without the benefit of being much fun. Continue reading ‘‘Pirates’ Set Sail On Dull ‘Tides’’

The Usual Suspects was released May 10th as a Blu-ray Book. I haven’t yet made up my mind about this new case, which is basically a book with a slot in the back to stick the Blu-ray disc in. As our movies shelves are beyond capacity I like the idea that these digibooks are thinner than the usual Blu-ray case, but I wonder how safe the disc is in the slot. Would it get scratched if this were one of my favorite movies that gets watched on a weekly basis? That remains to be seen, but I did learn some interesting things from the book portion of the set like the fact that The Usual Suspects was made for less than 7 million dollars, it’s been voted as one of AFI’s 10 great mystery films, and that it won two Oscars.

In this star-studded, black-hearted spy thriller directed and co-written by the legendary John Huston (The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen), a potentially catastrophic diplomatic letter from the CIA must be recovered at all costs. Drafted in is Rone (Patrick O’Neal), a young agent with a photographic memory, to make his way through a treacherous maze of shadowy cities and shady characters. Based on the acclaimed novel by Noel Behn, drawn from his work within the U. S. Army Counterintelligence Corps, The Kremlin Letter is a brutal, level-headed examination of espionage, leaving behind any trace of gadgetry or glamour. Like most men, I’m a big fan of John Wayne and his movies. My father introduced Wayne into my life with movies like North to Alaska, The Alamo, Rio Bravo and more. Despite being a huge fan of the man, I still haven’t seen all of his movies since he made so many during his long career. The Horse Soldiers was one of those movies that I had never seen until now. The film is based on the true-life raid by Col. Benjamin Grierson who, began his rampage through the South (known as Grierson’s Raid) from LeGrange, Tennessee, in April of 1863. Directed by the legendary John Ford and co-starring the great William Holden, I was really looking forward to this one. Did this movie live up to my expectations? Read on and find out… Continue reading ‘The Horse Soldiers (Blu-ray Review)’
