Black Swan (Blu-ray Review)

I had my reservations about going to see Black Swan when it was playing theatrically.  I loved the concept, but I hate to admit it, I’m not the biggest Natalie Portman fan.  I know she’s a natural beauty and that she can act, but every time I hear her name I tend to cringe and think of her wooden performances in the Star Wars prequels.  Don’t get me wrong, I love those films, albeit they will never live up to the originals, and I know the blame should not fall on Portman’s shoulders alone, but on Lucas.  However, a film about ballet?  That sounded pretty boring to me.  How about you? Scream 3 (Blu-ray Review)

Gale, Dewey, Cotton, and Sidney have survived both the Woodsboro massacre and the murders at Sidney’s college but now face another killer yet again.  While I really enjoyed the writing in Scream and Scream 2, it is a tragedy that Scream 3 was not written by Kevin Williamson since the quality dropped in this one.  Aside from the title of Cotton’s TV Show – “100% Cotton” there isn’t much I liked about this one. The Resident (Blu-ray Review)

Hammer Films through Image Entertainment has brought us The Resident starring Hillary Swank, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and the great Christopher Lee on Blu-ray.  As far as I know The Resident is a direct-to-video affair.  Even big name actors have to do these every once in a while, I guess.  Hammer Films has been around for years and years and have offered horror and thrillers for the masses since the 30’s.  It makes sense that Christopher Lee would partake of The Resident since he’s been in many Hammer Film productions over the years.  How does The Resident on Blu-ray stack up to its “thriller” contemporaries out there?  Please follow us into the abyss and read for yourself.  Continue reading ‘The Resident (Blu-ray Review)’

Forgive The Logic And Enter The Thrills Of ‘Source Code’

If Hitchcock, Agatha Christie, and Philip K. Dick walked into a bar, they could come up with the plot for Source Code, a cracking new thriller, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a time constricted helicopter pilot and directed by Duncan Jones, who previously made the great, sci-fi sleeper – Moon.  The film works as a high concept sci-fi film, with some mysterious elements involved in its proceedings. Scream 2 (Blu-ray Review)

Before the movie starts, we are treated to a preview for Scream 4, coming to theaters on April 15, 2011.  Although I DVR almost every TV show I watch (and never watch the commercials), I am amazed this is the first I’ve heard of Scream 4.  As the trailer plays I am waiting for it to turn into a spoof of the Scream Trilogy but in fact, it appears as though they have made an honest to goodness movie and I’m a little ashamed that I want to go see it in the theater.  I wonder…am I too old for this?

An ‘Insidious’ Build Leads To An Effectively Scary Film

I think perception plays a key role when one makes a decision about going to see a horror film.  While I would not say I am a snob when it comes to horror films, I do consider myself pretty choosy about which ones I see, especially when it comes down to what the film is rated.  In recent times, there have been a slew of films that have either been focused on extreme amounts of gore or copping out with cheap “jump scares” in order to secure a PG-13 rating.  There are always some exceptions Continue reading ‘An ‘Insidious’ Build Leads To An Effectively Scary Film’

‘Peep World’ Is An Uneven Look At A Dysfunctional Family

There are ways to make a dysfunctional-family comedy work.  Arrested Development will go down as one of the great comedy television shows of all time, because of the wide range of talent split between all of the different members of the family, the dynamic of those relationships, and how super sharp and hilarious the writing was.  Peep World feels like an attempt to recreate the spirit of that sort of show and push all of the similar themes into a story that only spans 90 minutes of screen time.  The result is very uneven, as there is a great cast present, but the writing is not nearly as sharp or funny as it needs to be. Apocalypse: World War II (Blu-ray Review)

Anyone that’s followed my reviews for awhile is aware of my interest and fascination with World War II. (In fact, I have another WWII film to review after this one)!  Because of that, I’ve seen a lot of WWII footage from such masterpieces like The World at War (see my review here) and Victory at Sea (here) so I was very surprised to see footage that I had never seen before.  Continue reading ‘Apocalypse: World War II (Blu-ray Review)’

The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection (Blu-ray Review)

As a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes, I’ve been biding my time waiting for these films to arrive on high definition and the wait is finally over!  MPI and the UCLA Film and Television Archive have teamed up to restore twelve out of the fourteen films in this collection.  Now in glorious 1080p resolution, these films have never looked better!  With the incomparable Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as the bumbling but good natured Dr. Watson, this is the team up that all other actors playing these roles are compared to. ‘Das Boot’ on Blu-ray July 5th

Considered one of the best war films of all time in addition to one of the best films in German cinema history, Wolfgang Petersen’s masterpiece Das Boot is torpedoing to the Blu-ray format this July!  Not only will Das Boot be making it’s debut on the Blu-ray format (in the U.S.), but it will be coming to Blu-ray in a RESTORED and REMASTERED edition.  This is the 208 minute “Director’s Cut,” not the 293 minute  “Original Uncut” version of Das Boot. Ja, das ist gut!  Continue reading ‘‘Das Boot’ on Blu-ray July 5th’

Scream (Blu-ray Review)

I have to admit; it’s been awhile since I last visited the Scream franchise.  Where do all the years go?  I often find myself asking that question more than I care to acknowledge.  But one thing’s for sure, no matter how many spoofs or rip-offs that have popped up in the horror genre over the past 15 years, Scream has always held it’s ground as a pop culture phenomenon against the rest of the competition.   Like it or not, it’s simply a film that can’t be touched. Rocktagon MMA Aims For, Achieves 5-Star Events

It’s hard to believe that it will almost be a year when Why So Blu covered its first mixed martial arts event. In that time, we’ve seen fight card after fight card of determined athletes pitted against each other amidst a backdrop of live music and an engrossed fanbase. While the people behind Rocktagon make this look like an easily-assembled formula for entertainment, there’s actually a very determined work ethic taking place behind the scenes, which not only brings the ferocity and education of MMA to the public in an up close and personal style, but is a formula for success if nothing else.
