This is the moment you have all been waiting for folks and it’s finally here! Since it was first announced this past February, fans around the world have anxiously been awaiting the very first online episode (see here). I’m not into divulging any spoilers, but I was overjoyed to hear the F-bombs in the show! You gotta keep it real, right? Also, I like to point out that the production value is relatively high here. You can definitely tell the Magic Bullets scenes when you see them, but overall, the quality rules. That’s important, right? But how’s the story? Well, it wasn’t what I expected, but I will let you be the judge of that. So without further ado, I present to you the first online episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Enjoy it! Alright. Here’s the conundrum I face. Do I or don’t I? When it comes to discovering new talent I tend to believe whatever I like will go on to become the newest fad. Who doesn’t like to think that way? Sometimes it’s a blessing and sometimes it’s a curse in disguise. My wife thinks I’m full of it, but what does she know. I aksed my fellow writer Gerard Iribe today if he would mind if I did a very short piece on my latest musical find. He said sure…go for it. I know, right out of the gate, I will be blasted with Burlesque-like insults, but quite frankly, I don’t bleeping care. Like my leading lady within this piece shows us, “This Is What Rock N Roll Looks Like.” Continue reading ‘Porcelain Black Shows Us What Rock N Roll Looks Like’

For years, Don Bluth was one of Disney’s chief animators and worked on many of their classic movies before taking off on his own for a short period before returning to the studio for a couple of years before leaving again. With Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy, he founded Don Bluth Productions and released the cartoon short “Banjo the Woodpile Cat,” and then the animated segment for Xanadu. He also provided the animation for the “Dragon’s Lair” and “Space Ace” video-games. When a group of former Disney executives formed a production company called Aurora Productions, they funded what many people consider to be Bluth’s masterpiece – The Secret of Nimh. I’ve always loved the 80’s whether it’s the music or the movies, but I could do without a lot of the fashion. 1985 was a good year for movies when you consider that The Goonies, The Breakfast Club, Rocky IV, Witness, Fletch, A View to a Kill, Young Sherlock Holmes, and more came out that year. Teen Wolf was wisely released after Back to the Future, which turned out to be the biggest movie of the year. That strategy allowed it to capitalize on Michael J. Fox’s huge success and gave this small movie more box office receipts than expected. Teen Wolf is a light-hearted comedy that is powered solely through the superb star power and charisma of Michael J. Fox. Continue reading ‘Teen Wolf (Blu-ray Review)’

I’m always up for new discoveries when it comes to music and musicians. Being a hard rock aficionado and guitar geek, why is it that I had never heard of Rory Gallagher? In fact the whole staff at Why So Blu hadn’t heard of him. I decided to go ahead and venture into unexplored territory with the Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour ’74 Blu-ray. In a sense you really can’t go wrong when some of the greatest living guitar legends of all time like Slash, Brian May, Glenn Tipton, and The Edge, cite Gallagher as a major influence in their playing of the guitar. That’s all I needed to know before I dove into the Blu-ray. Continue reading ‘Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour ’74 (Blu-ray Review)’

There is a lengthy, one-take sequence in the middle of Hanna that is a showcase for clever camera work, a solid central performance, intrigue, and a climactic action sequence that delivers on stylish, visceral impact. All of the descriptors for this scene can be used to describe Hanna as a whole, with another huge shout out going to the fantastic and nontraditional score composed by The Chemical Brothers. I recently posted an article here on the site mentioning the release of Nintendo’s glasses-free 3D version of the handheld DS. I finally got my hands on a demo and after a few minutes on the small machine, the verdict is in…

There have been a lot of Broadway plays that have made the transition to the big screen, but none seem as unlikely as Fiddler on the Roof. The play itself was a risky endeavor since many felt that the story of a milkman and his family set in the 1900s in Russia wouldn’t have mainstream appeal. It ended up being the longest running play in history with a ten year run until it was beaten by Grease. Continue reading ‘Fiddler on the Roof – 40th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray Review)’

Arthur puts itself in a difficult place when it comes to evaluating it. One of the best things I can say about Arthur is that a lot of people laughed really hard in my theater, and that does not make them wrong. However, the percentage of those people who had seen the original 1981 Arthur was probably very low. That film is superior, but this update has some genuinely funny moments. Morgan Freeman has a way with words. Not only is the guy an incredible actor, but his skills in the narrative department also excel. I would be hard-pressed to name an actor or narrator who does a better job at guiding a documentary than he. Putting his vocal talents to use once more, this time in the educational IMAX film, Born To Be Wild. Bring the whole family for this wonderful documentary that kids and adults will equally enjoy.

Quite possibly my favorite Pixar movie to date, The Incredibles is finally on Blu-ray! After making The Iron Giant, which was a critical but not commercial success, Brad Bird joined Pixar to make their first movie with humans as the lead characters. Initially, Disney wanted to make it a live action movie but that idea was turned down by John Lasseter. As Bird said later, “Basically, I came into a wonderful studio, frightened a lot of people with how many presents I wanted for Christmas, and then got almost everything I asked for.” Continue reading ‘The Incredibles (Blu-ray Review)’

It’s like that Lady Gaga song, “Born This Way.” Here’s two of my favorite interests…the color black and the subject of death…combined into one movie title. So yeah, baby I was born this way. Okay, that may be a stretch, but bear with me. I actually just saw this feature late last weekend at the Cleveland Film Festival. I thought it was pretty good, but I know if it had not been past twilight I would have loved it more. Anyway, I’m pleased to report that Magnolia Home Entertainment and Magnet will be releasing Sean Bean’s Black Death on Blu-ray May 10th. Continue reading ‘Black Death Lives on Blu-ray This May’

I haven’t heard of this movie but any movie directed by Peter Weir (Master and Commander) and stars Ed Harris (The Rock), and Colin Farrell (In Bruges) should be pretty good. This is a prison escape movie which I always enjoy so I’m looking forward to seeing this. The movie also has upcoming stars Saoirse Ronan (The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo) and Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe as well. Continue reading ‘The Way Back Comes to Blu-ray April 19’
