I Am Alive – Surviving the Andes Plane Crash (DVD Review)

On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed in the Andes Mountains with forty-five passengers aboard.  Due to pilot error, their flight plan and position was incorrect which led search patrol to look for survivors in the wrong area and eventually to abandon the plane and passengers as lost.  Left to survive on their own, the ill-equipped survivors had to survive in one of the most desolate places in the world and make choices that no human being should ever be forced to make in order to survive.

Stand By Me: 25th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Has it already been twenty five  years since the coming of age story Stand By Me hit theaters?  Time flies doesn’t it.  Well, it only took twenty five years for Stand By Me to hit the Blu-ray format, but here it is at long last!  I also have a confession to make.  I’ve never seen Stand By Me before.  Yeah, I know.  I knew of it, and I knew who was in it, but never saw it.  I know that Monster Squad was a horror version of Stand By Me. Does that count?  This will be an adventure for all of us.  Continue reading ‘Stand By Me: 25th Anniversary Edition (Blu-ray Review)’

Moonstruck (Blu-ray Review)

Norman Jewison’s Moonstruck paved the way for other culturally focused comedies like My Big Fat Greek Wedding where the story revolves around a large family who loves, fights, and eats together.  In this case, the movie is about the Castorini family, an Italian brood that sticks together despite some problems which include infidelity, curses, and more.  Continue reading ‘Moonstruck (Blu-ray Review)’

Gulliver’s Travels Journeys to Blu-ray April 19!

Gulliver’s Travels has a great cast with Jack Black, Jason Segel, Emily Blunt, and Amanda Peet who star in this classic tale of a regular guy who travel to the land called Lilliput where he is a giant among them.  This version seems to be very family friendly and I’ve read that they created a new process of filming in 3D so I’m curious to see how it turned out.  Continue reading ‘Gulliver’s Travels Journeys to Blu-ray April 19!’

Last Tango In Paris (Blu-ray Review)

Bernardo Bertolucci’s Last Tango in Paris is one of the most controversial yet celebrated movies in film history.  In fact, when it was released it was with an “X” rating and was protested by many women’s groups.  The press either seemed to love  it or hate it.  Some like Pauline Kael said that, “Tango has altered the face of an art form,” while others like William F. Buckley described it as “Pornography disguised as art.”

Burlesque (Blu-ray Review)

Quite honestly, I’m not sure how many people are going to spend their time reading this review or care that I’m so passionate about this title.  It’s a shame too.  Most of the same people who put me down for liking this are the ones that get upset because I never saw “this” or “that.”  Let’s see.  How does the old saying go?  I think it’s “to each their own” or something like that.  Anyway, this review is for me.  It’s a celebration of a film I really enjoyed last year.  It’s a delicate time in my life when I will take my “man card” out of my pocket momentarily and lay it on the table as I write this and truly could care less if you hate this film or not. Continue reading ‘Burlesque (Blu-ray Review)’

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: The Fate of Two Worlds

The people at Capcom have done it again.  They managed to take the most recognizable characters from Marvel and pit them against their own impressive list of characters from some of their marquee games.  In Marvel vs. Capcom 2 there was a plethora of characters to choose from, 56 in fact.  In this installment the roster has been reduced by twenty.  What they lack in character selection they more than make up for in other areas.  Let’s take a closer look. Continue reading ‘Marvel vs. Capcom 3: The Fate of Two Worlds’

Rain Man (Blu-ray Review)

This improbable pairing of Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise as brothers in a movie about autism seemed like an unlikely contender for success, but it not only succeeded both commercially and critically, but it also won four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and a well-deserved Best Actor award for Dustin Hoffman. A ‘Hall Pass’ May Excuse You From This

This is a movie about dorks.  The characters here are a couple of nice guys, who act like nice guys caught saying inappropriate things on many occasions.  There is a lot of raunchiness and gag related humor mixed with some sentiment and a touch of heart.  Unfortunately, the film does not hit the humor marks very hard. Continue reading ‘A ‘Hall Pass’ May Excuse You From This’

‘Drive Angry’ Made Me Aggravated That There Wasn’t More Angry Driving

This is strange, but I am going to have to both judge this movie, while defending Piranha 3D.  I think Piranha was the kind of film where I could have written the exact same review and assign it either a 1 star or a 4 star rating (which is what I ended up doing).  That film knew exactly what it was and it did it well.  Drive Angry also knows exactly what it is, but unfortunately, what it is as not as much fun as it should be. Continue reading ‘‘Drive Angry’ Made Me Aggravated That There Wasn’t More Angry Driving’

Glorious 39 (Blu-ray Review)

When I first heard of this movie I wanted to see it just for the cast alone.  Glorious 39 has Bill Nighy, Julie Christie, Christopher Lee, Jeremy Northam, David Tennant, and that’s a pretty good combination.  Plus, it was marketed as a thriller that takes place right before World War II, so between the two I wanted to review this.  While I did get to see this excellent cast do their parts as well as they could, I was let down by the rest of the movie.
