Warner Home Video has announced three more Blu-ray double feature packs. They will all be released on June 7 and include American History X / A History of Violence, Collateral Damage / Eraser and Wyatt Earp / The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. There is literally no difference between these versions of the film and their respective single disc counterparts. You can check out the cover art that’s available for two of the releases below. These sets are not up for pre-order as of yet on Amazon. Continue reading ‘More Warner Bros. Blu-ray Doubles on the Way!’

Oh yes, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is finally bringing Taxi Driver to the Blu-ray format this April! Taxi Driver is considered one of the best character studies and even one of the best films of all time. What will truly separate this release from all the others that have come before is that SPHE has gone to the source and restored the film in 4K from the original camera negative. In addition to the restoration this version of Taxi Driver will also be fully loaded with special features including the Scorsese/Schrader audio commentary that has only ever been available on the laserdisc edition. It will truly be a sight for sore eyes when Taxi Driver hits the shelves on Blu-ray April 5th. “You looking at me?” Continue reading ‘“Taxi Driver” Picks You Up On Blu-ray April 5th’

Right off the bat, I am going to say that I will be surprised with how much I have to say about this movie by the time I reach the end of this review. For whatever reason, Disney has not only decided to produce an animated comedy about lawn gnomes (which is not a bad idea), but has for some reason decided to base it on the plot of one of the most famous romantic tragedies of all time and release it during Valentine’s Day weekend. I dare you to guess how far the studio wanted to take these characters by the time it got to the end. Continue reading ‘‘Gnomeo & Juliet’ Brings Childish Joy For Few’

Attention all Programs! Tron and Tron: Legacy are both coming to Blu-ray April 5th! Prepare for disc wars, lightcycles, and more when the original movie and it’s long awaited sequel finally arrive in high definition! I can’t wait to see how these look on Blu-ray and how the 3D turns out! Based on the last couple of 3D releases from Disney, I think it’s safe to say that it’s going to look incredible! The Eagle presents a story about a soldier trying to redeem his family’s honor by retrieving a lost treasure of the Roman nation. It is also a buddy film that unites two unlikely friends. I would have liked to enjoy these two aspects of the film more if this film tried to make it more interesting. While I appreciated the practical aspect of this film when it came to the action sequences, there really isn’t much else to grab onto here. The film goes through its predictable motions without developing any aspect that is particularly unique. Continue reading ‘‘The Eagle’ Soars At About Mid Altitude’

There have been many comedy teams throughout the years such as Laurel and Hardy or The Three Stooges, but one of the biggest acts was Abbott and Costello. The combination of the straight man schemer (Abbott) and the man perpetually in trouble (Costello) was a winning combination and led to their great success. I totally missed this one in theaters, but 20th Century Fox will be releasing Casino Jack on Blu-ray April 5th. Kevin Spacey stars as a lobbyist who ensnares himself into big trouble while amassing a fortune. Comedy, political intrigue, corruption will all play a role in Casino Jack. Casino Jack was to be George Hickenlooper’s final film as director before he passed away right before it’s theatrical release. Continue reading ‘“Casino Jack” Lobbies For Blu-ray’

I don’t tend to post many news items, but today saw the release of the first trailer for X-Men: First Class, the prequel/reboot of the comic book movie series. With this new trailer out, we now have footage from all three Marvel Studios superhero movies that are going to be released this summer, which also includes Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Lionsgate presents one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2010 in the Rabbit Hole starring Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart. The film is directed by John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch). I’m a big fan of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, but have a feeling that Rabbit Hole will be a complete 180 degree departure for John Cameron Mitchell. Lionsgate will be releasing Rabbit Hole on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Download, and VOD on April 19th. Continue reading ‘Follow The “Rabbit Hole” On Blu-ray’

Before Kenneth Branagh brought his own adaption of Hamlet to the big-screen in 1996, he played the role on stage under the direction Derek Jacobi who himself played Hamlet years earlier to great acclaim. The year was 1990, and Branagh was on the brink to international stardom but not quite there yet. Continue reading ‘Discovering Hamlet (DVD Review)’

For fans of the Holmes and Watson portrayed by Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, a nice treat arrives this March 29th when all of their Sherlock Holmes films finally arrive on Blu-ray in one complete collection! While I never thought Bruce’s interpretation of Watson was true to the original stories, I always thought that Basil Rathbone was an excellent Sherlock Holmes. While watching the 2004 Academy Awards, I recall the award for Best Original Song. After sitting through a set of nominated songs that brought little excitement, the final entry came on. It was for “Belleville Rendez-vous” from the animated French comedy, The Triplets of Belleville, directed by Sylvain Chomet. This song was a burst of jazzy fun and I felt I immediately needed to see that movie. After having done so, I immediately fell in love with it and would be anticipating whatever Chomet had to offer next. Continue reading ‘‘The Illusionist’ Creates Animated and Heartfelt Wonder’

Dead Space 2 is a fantastic follow up to the original Science Fiction/Survival Horror sleeper hit from Visceral Games and Electronic Arts. It is not as much a significant upgrade as say Assassin’s Creed to Assassin’s Creed II, but it takes what worked very well in an already great first entry and adds little tweaks and a more diverse setting to make the gameplay and overall experience very satisfying. Making an underwater, 3D cave-diving thriller, with producer James Cameron in your back corner, seems like an exciting idea for a film. Using today’s technology, there are certainly a lot of ways to come up with a well made film that can pit people up against elements such as air, darkness, and tight spaces, as they struggle to survive. Unfortunately, nothing really helps the cause when that film is glued together by a pretty horribly written script and poor work by some of the actors involved. Such is the case with Sanctum. There are moments, especially towards the end, that are quite involving, but the film as a whole cannot support its nice photography and moments of actual tension with the story and characters that it provides.
