It’s official! More of the casting for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men: First Class has been solidified with some names you may recognize, paving the way for the next mutant free-for-all. Fans are ready, though some with warranted skepticism, for this next installment in the series which will actually serve as a prequel in the X-Men movie storyline. With a release date set for next year, the film has begun gaining momentum in the rumor mill, although there are some things we can verify. Continue reading ‘X-Men: First Class Fills Roster Spots’

Animal Kingdom is an Aussie crime thriller that benefits from fantastic direction as well as marvelous and restrained acting from everyone involved. This is a film that is thrilling, but doesn’t rely on slick editing, instead placing emphasis on sequences built around tension, focus and concentration. The scope of the film isn’t large, but even while only centered on a small family, I was never fully aware of the turns this film would take. Less concerned with focusing on the activities of Melbourne crime families on a large scale, this film follows the plights of few a characters and is incredibly well constructed in that regard. I guess you can say that I’m a complete virgin when it comes to the world of the CW’s The Vampire Diaries. It’s weird too, considering how much of a sucker I am for the vampire lore (and my love for HBO’s True Blood). Heck, I have met the cast at last year’s Scream Awards (see here), seen signs for the television show plastered all over Comic-Con and even have friends who religiously watch the show, but for some strange reason, I have yet to ever check it out myself. I know…weird, huh? Continue reading ‘The Vampire Diaries – Season 1 (Blu-ray Review)’

I can’t tell you how happy I am about this news. Not only has the official teaser trailer for Adam Green’s upcoming Hatchet II been leaked online, but also the surprise announcement Adam Green promised us a month ago at Comic-Con (see here) has surfaced too. Hatchet II will see a limited theatrical release in AMC theaters across the nation. Why is this so important? Well, simply because it marks the first time an unrated film will get a nationwide theatrical release in a big movie chain. Continue reading ‘Adam Green’s Hatchet II Lands in AMC Theaters!’

There was a time when this film was threatened with the possibility of not being released, only to later be threatened with having a release, but not a 3D release. Fortunately enough, the powers at be made it possible for this film to be release as intended, thus preserving its artistic integrity. Anyway, there is a prolonged sequence featuring a very naked Kelly Brook swimming underwater with her very naked companion, accompanied by the orchestral theme “Viens Mallika Sous Le Dome Edais from Lakme.” This sequence earns the film its first star. Although I went into the press screening of Lottery Ticket with zero expectations, I can’t say that I have not been fascinated about this movie’s premise my entire life. My mind is so complicated by the way I process the real world. Instead of thinking how a winning lottery ticket could change my life for the better, my mind instantly drifts off to that dark place in regards to worrying about the safe keeping of that physical ticket until I can cash it. I mean, a lot can happen to a piece of paper, right? Continue reading ‘Don’t Lose That Winning Lottery Ticket!’

Well there wasn’t much Blu-ray news to report on yesterday, but at least one positive thing happened in the world. Someone was cast to play Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s US adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. That girl’s name is Rooney Mara. I only know her from the newest incarnation of A Nightmare on Elm Street, but others will get to know her from David Fincher’s other upcoming film, The Social Network. I really want to see that one. Not all that long ago, I came across DC’s latest animated title to hit the streets. Titled Batman: Under the Red Hood, Amazon included a brief clip from the film that contained some action, though offered little in the way of substance. It was questionable that DC released yet another Batman title in their animated lineup when there are so many characters yet to be tapped for the transition to a cartoon film. Saturday’s news from Celebration V really hit home with George Lucas’ official announcement that all 6 Star Wars films will be making their way to Blu-ray next year. There was no release date or no price information, but who the hell cares. I can finally watch Star Wars again (since my boycott of DVD in 2007)! But more importantly… I can watch Star Wars on Blu-ray! Continue reading ‘CV: George Lucas Announces Star Wars on Blu-ray!’

Leading up to the release of The Expendables, the main joy came from the fact that Sylvester Stallone had managed to pull together a ton of action stars, from multiple decades, all in for one seemingly cheesy action movie. While the film certainly delivered in that respect, I found the overall result to be more fun as an idea to be excited for and to talk about rather than when actually viewing the film. Both the hard-hitting action and stupidity on display certainly made me enjoy the film overall, but I can’t help but think it could have embraced its over-the-top concept for somewhat better results. I think when every red-blooded male heard that Sylvester Stallone was putting together a film that contained some of the most popular action stars from the 80’s and today, they got all googly-eyed as if they had just seen the gates of cinema heaven. I should know. I was one of them. It wasn’t long after then that I discovered actors like Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger would have nothing more than cameos in the potential blockbuster. Booo. Nevertheless, the active lineup is still impressive. Continue reading ‘The Expendables Delivers Fun Action, Little Else’
