The Lollapalooza 2010 Experience

So two things:  I enjoy a good concert, and I have never been to Chicago.  In an effort to satisfy both of these things, on the weekend of August 6th – 8th, I embarked on a trip to Lollapalooza 2010, located in Grant Park, Chicago, IL.  For those unfamiliar, Lollapalooza is an annual music festival, consisting of a diverse range of bands (though mostly alternative rock), performing on about 8 different stages throughout the day. I Would Be Proud To Stand By This ‘Centurion’

My love for writers/directors Robert Rodriguez and Christopher Nolan is not a secret around here, but one man that often gets overlooked, because of his UK presence in my opinion, is Neil Marshall.  He put out a pair of my favorite films in the past five years, Descent and Doomsday.  Now I did not mean to make it seem like these are my two most favorite films of the past five years, but rather I would like to come across by expressing the fact that they are in an elite class of what I would consider to be my most desirable and most watched movies made since 2005. Bringing in ‘The Other Guys’ Was a Solid Choice

Here’s a genre mix – A fanciful comedy set in the world of a gritty buddy cop film.  I say this because this movie never tries to make its world feel real, despite being filmed as if it were from the door steps of a Michael Mann cop drama.  Instead, we have a film that deals with the basic tropes of a buddy cop film, and pokes fun at them, as well as injects a good amount of absurdist humor that many Will Ferrell films have been known for. Rush Hour Speeds Onto Blu-ray This Winter

Now here’s a catalog flick that is a definite must-own for my Blu-ray collection.  Merry Christmas Brian.  Warner Home Video has announced a December 7th Blu-ray release date for the New Line movie Rush Hour.  This Brett Ratner action comedy stars the martial arts of Jackie Chan and the hilarious antics of Chris Tucker.  These two cracked me up when I first saw them onscreen together and still do to this very day.  Can anyone say Rush Hour 4?  C’mon!  Currently, there has been no announcement about a Rush Hour 2 Blu-ray release. Comic-Con 2010: Drive Angry 3D

I’m finally scraping the bottom of the barrel with all my Comic-Con 2010 coverage, but that doesn’t mean the following stories are any less important than the others.  I usually save some of the best for last.  Usually.  Drive Angry 3D is a hard R-rated action/adventure that was filmed in Real 3D and proudly features violence, sex, revenge and car stunts.  And best of all, Drive Angry stars my twin (as so many tell me), Nicolas Cage, the beautiful Amber Heard and bada$$ William Fitchner. Continue reading ‘Comic-Con 2010: Drive Angry 3D’

Step Up 3D No Average Dance

Some of you probably know by now that I’m not very favorable of 3D.  It started out as a gimmick, was revived as a gimmick, and will die as a gimmick.  Still, when I saw the 2D previews for Step Up 3D, I saw potential for some impressive use of the novelty technology.  So can a little street dancing and 3D make a good marriage on film?  It was actually the wife of Why So Blu guru Brian White who said of the Step Up franchise, “You really don’t see them for the story.  It’s more for the dancing.” Continue reading ‘Step Up 3D No Average Dance’

Warner Bros has done something unique.  In a music first, if memory serves, they have released a collection of the King’s films and live performances.  These editions have been released as a 3-disc Blu-ray collection and as a single disc-book of Elvis on Tour.  WhySoBlu was extremely fortunate to get a copy of the 3-disc set for review and a set to give away (enter here).  Without further delay  WhySoBlu is proud to present the Elvis: Blu-ray Collection. I Want To Be Just Like ‘The Other Guys’

Stop!  I want to play a game.  No, not like Jigsaw does in the Saw movies, but I want to play good cop, bad cop.  What?  You want to be the bad cop too?  How will that ever work out?  Well if you are talking about the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg action-comedy film The Other Guys, I have a hunch that’s it’s going to work out to be a pretty ball-busting hilarious good ole’ time.    But that’s just me.  I don’t mind giving this film a shameless plug or two right off the bat. Scott Pilgrim Achieves an Epic Win (Movie Review)

From the fiery depths of geekdom, director Edgar Wright has emerged with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, a film daring to defy the conventions of both romantic comedies and action films.  His adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim comic book series is a wonderful blend of comedy, action, romance, music, and great visual storytelling.  This is a film bringing together a hip young cast, plentiful video game references, innovative action sequences, and a strong alternative/indie rock soundtrack. It’s a blast of entertainment for anyone ready to experience a kinetic jolt of fun unlike anything seen at this level. Continue reading ‘Scott Pilgrim Achieves an Epic Win (Movie Review)’

Comic-Con 2010: Paul

I first became aware of the upcoming Simon Pegg comedy adventure, Paul, through my involvement over at leiasmetalbikini.com.  The webmaster over there filled me in on the filming late last year, as it pertains to all things Comic-Con and of course, girls dressed in scantily clad Princess Leia metal bikinis. The film has a ridiculous cast that consists of Simon Pegg, Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, Sigourney Weaver, Jeffry Tambor, Bill Hader, Nick Frost and the very funny, Joe Lo Truglio. Comic-Con 2010: Jason Howard Interview

It’s come that time to wrap up the last of my 2010 Comic-Con articles.  It proved to be yet another grand weekend of stars, starlets, ink, film and fun in San Diego this year.  On Wednesday’s preview night, I took a moment to focus more on the ink than anything else, spending some time at the Image Comics booth.  ‘Booth’, however, is an understatement, as the Image area covers some significant square footage and is dotted with a variety of company talent.
