John Woo has returned to his roots, so to speak. It’s been almost 20 years since he’s taken on a project of Chinese origin, whether it being a gangster, war, or period piece. This was obviously a passion project, and when you have total control and a nice sized budget, the sky is the limit. John Woo Executive produced, co-wrote the screenplay, and directed the film. It’s been a 3-year journey to this moment. Continue reading ‘Red Cliff – U.S. Theatrical Version (Blu-ray Review)’

I just came home from a Wednesday night preview screening of The Bounty Hunter. One word quickly comes to mind. Cliché. The Jennifer Aniston/Gerard Butler romantic comedy, and I’ll use those two words loosely, is about as dull and predictable as they get. I felt my mind going gad during most of the screening. It’s not the worst movie I have seen so far this year, but it definitely won’t have me standing outside Best Buy on a cold Tuesday morning before the store opens to grab a copy on Blu-ray. Continue reading ‘The Bounty Hunter Misses Its Target’

Okay, so Boba Fett wasn’t actually comedic as the intent of this film is, but he was cool and that’s something the film The Bounty Hunter is not. Starring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston, audiences get to discover that Gerard Butler can be in a crappy film. Call it bad direction, call it bad acting, call it a bad script, heck, call it all three of those, because in the end, it really doesn’t matter. His work on this project was as flat as the Nebraska plains. Meanwhile, those same audiences get to rediscover that Jennifer Aniston is not an actress. Whenever I get a chance to write about Rob Zombie I jump right on the first opportunity to do so. The man has done so much over the past 20+ years and his legacy continues. Word cannot even describe how much his career, music, films and other passions mean to me. He provides me the much needed motivation to live strong every day. But wait…his legacy just doesn’t end with music and movies…he’s also been heavily involved in the world of comics and he’s making his return known this May with the title Whatever Happened to Baron Von Shock? Continue reading ‘Whatever Happened To Baron Von Shock?’

Summertime arrives early this year for me with last year’s blockbuster film coming to Blu-ray this April. Actually, isn’t it the biggest grossing film of all time? Well anyway, the record breaking film needs no introduction. James Cameron’s Avatar arrives on the Blu-ray/DVD retail shelves of planet Earth everywhere on April 22nd. If that day doesn’t break home video sales records, then I don’t know what I am talking about. Continue reading ‘Avatar Blu-ray = 40th Anniversary of Earth Day’

Four years is not that long when you think about and in that amount of time from now, Riverdance will become 20 years old. Where has the time gone? The year was 1994 and a little something known as the Eurovision Song Contest, a competition that is a fixture in Europe, was being hosted by Ireland. As host, it was their duty to provide a piece of entertainment with hopes of impressing audience members and television viewers alike. Continue reading ‘Irish Dance and the Flatley Factor’

September 19, 1997 is a date I will always remember. I have been fortunate enough in my life that I got to interview (and later meet) someone who inspired more than anyone else. This may sound cliché, but Irish dance changed me, my life, the way I approach things, etc. This interview, while it didn’t really fall into my lap, well, I’m just going to say it fell into my lap. I had been chatting online one day with a fellow Lord of the Dance fan named ‘Mitzi.’ Continue reading ‘Interview with Michael Flatley’

Here at Why So Blu, we always like to point out great talent. In late 2009, we featured an interview/article on Irish singer Liz Madden, whose travels have brought her over the pond from the Emerald Isle. The woman behind the smooth-as-glass voice has released her latest work My Irish Home, now on available CD and also for download at Amazon and iTunes. As far as Matthew Broderick films go, I haven’t found one I don’t like and Wonderful World is no different. We’ve seen him dance around in The Producers and of course who could forget him as the adorable slacker in Ferris Beuller’s Day Off, but now we see him as a pessimistic career proof-reader and failed children’s folksinger. It’s an interesting combination, but it works to make the character someone you want to help up out of the perpetual mud puddle of life he is floundering in. Our Family Wedding is a tongue-in-cheek romantic comedy starring Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera as Lucia Ramirez, who is certainly not ugly in this new film. Quite the contrary as the beautiful actress sports charisma and talent on the screen. Also headlining the film is Lance Gross (House of Payne) who plays opposite Ferrera as her husband to be, Marcus. The two have made some drastic changes in their lives, some of which are being kept from their parents who know nothing of the inter-racial relationship. It’s Monday morning. I lost an hour of my day yesterday due to Daylight Savings Time. I think I deserve the right to be a little crabby today. Actually, I was doing OK until I stumbled upon the following press release. And this will also be one of the few times you ever hear me talk about a DVD release. Words cannot express how disappointed I am right now with my favorite Blu-ray movie studio Lionsgate. Continue reading ‘The Descent: Part 2… NOT Coming to Blu-ray?’

Are you in the market for a no holds barred, martial arts-infused, action movie? Well, if you purchase Warner Brothers’ Ninja Assassin, then that’s exactly what you are going to get. Make no mistake that the action sequences are zany and over-the-top, but that’s the appeal of Ninja Assassin. Even our own reviewer, Gregg Senko (see his review here), loved this film. That says a lot coming from a man who could not stand the non-stop crazy mayhem of one of my favorites, Crank. Continue reading ‘Ninja Assassin (Blu-ray Review)’

Let me begin by extinguishing the haste of all those who said this is another Bourne movie, just set in Iraq. BZZZT. Sorry, thanks for playing. We’ve got some great parting gifts for you. However, I can see how one would deduce such a theory based on the misleading trailer, but we’ll get to the nitty-gritty in a second. Green Zone reunites the former Bourne tag-team of director Paul Greengrass and actor Matt Damon. Continue reading ‘Green Zone is Red Hot’

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is one of those projects that some bill as ‘an artistic film.’ I have never really been certain of what that phrase means. My take on it is a movie that is low budget, has some bigger names, and flies under everyone’s radar. It can be argued that every film is artistic, but we are a society that does have to have a label for everything so for Pippa, ‘artistic’ it is. This film only saw a limited release in U.S. theaters grossing slightly over $337,000 (the-numbers.com) and recently made its debut on wonderful Blu-ray. After being scolded by movie reviewer Gregg Senko for not checking this one out in the theater, I think this will be a day 1 purchase for me on the Blu-ray format. Lucky for me, May is right around the corner. Lionsgate has announced a May 11th Blu-ray release date for the blood war film, Daybreakers. The stars Ethan Hawke and everyone’s favorite green enemy, Willem Dafoe. The vampire film was touted as being both original and clever, so I am looking forward to checking this one out. Check out the full press release from Lionsgate below. Continue reading ‘Daybreakers Bites Into Blu-ray This May…’

Halleluiah! My prayers have been answered. It seems that we finally have some concrete information confirming Christopher Nolan’s involvement in a third Batman film. I came across this very interesting article (see below) in the LA Times yesterday that I wanted to share with the world…or at least all our readers. The Geoff Boucher article exposes the director’s involvement in rebooting the Superman franchise as well as spilling the beans on all the wild Batman rumors circulating the net over the past year. 1999 was a great year, let me count the ways. Woodstock ’99, Y2K, the end of the world, etc… Okay, so a lot of it was blown way out of proportion. What wasn’t blown out of proportion was the arrival or rebirth (if you will) of a particular band by the name of Powerman 5000. They came in with guitars set on ANNIHILATE and DESTROY. Led by Spider One, these futuristic sci-fi characters landed on the scene with their second album entitled Tonight the Stars Revolt!
