Can you believe it? We are now almost 3 months away from one of the biggest movies that will drop this year…KICK-ASS! Yes, Avatar and Iron Man 2 may have been the talk of the town during Comic-Con 2009, but the real hidden gem that made it’s presence known with ferocity and comedic genius was that of Matthew Vaughn’s KICK-ASS, based on the best-selling comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. Continue reading ‘This April is Going to KICK-ASS!’

Jigsaw’s terrifying reign on the Blu-ray format continues on January 26th. We last left off not knowing the exact goodies Jigsaw had in store for us on the Blu-ray release, but I am happy to report that is not the case anymore. Check out the full press release below from Lionsgate as they give us an all-access look into the special features we can expect to find on the Saw VI Blu-ray release. Let me start off by saying that I am a huge Mel Brooks fan. I have been so for as long as I can remember, but it has been a long time, admittedly, since I have sat down and viewed one of his films. When recently given the opportunity to review The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-Ray, specifically the film Spaceballs, I was nevertheless ecstatic. I was excited not only to watch some of these comedy classics again, but also to see what kind of remastering efforts and extras were included on the Blu-ray releases. It is with a great sigh of relief that studios have realized the entertainment and preservation value of transferring many of the old black and white classics to Blu-ray. The accomplishment is two-fold. First, it keeps these movies from falling into obscurity. They are now re-marketed, and quite often, these films gain a new following from new audiences. Second, it cleans up an otherwise grainy picture littered with ‘visual noise.’ Continue reading ‘5 Black & White Classics For Blu-Ray’

I feel the need to get something off my pulmonary cavity before I even begin here. Make no mistake; I am a gargantuan fan of the Diablo Cody horror comedy film Jennifer’s Body. Since owning the Blu-ray disc last Tuesday it has frequented my Blu-ray drive a total of seven majestic times. I just can’t seem to get enough of it. Like most movies I have seen this past year, the second viewing at home has been the most crucial in determining its cultural relevance within my life and usually the most applauding, as is the case here. If 2010 proves to be a year scarred by a multitude of bad films (which I don’t think will be the case), I will always have the Broadway-based Nine to make my top ten list. Starring Daniel Day Lewis as the overworked and oversexed film director Guido Contini, the man is surrounded by a barrage of talented and gorgeous female co-stars. Before I run down the roster of who’s who in the film, let me inform you that these women didn’t just act in the film, they danced and did their own singing as well. Continue reading ‘‘Nine’ Brilliant To The Last’

We thought it would be a fun idea, here at Why So Blu, if a few of us writers got together and wrote a conglomerate review of what we each thought our Top 10 Blu-ray releases of the year were in 2009. I know the anticipation and speculation must be running rampant through your veins right now so without further ado and anymore unnecessary words let’s get down to business and see what we all picked. I waited patiently until after my most recent screening of Sherlock Holmes to compile this list that I have been looking forward to working on all year long. As Gregg Senko kind of mentioned yesterday, it was not until the second half of the year that I was really able to round up a majority of the all-star gems I would be calling upon to complete the below list of my Top 10 films of 2009. Continue reading ‘Brian’s Top 10 Films of 2009’

Up in the Air has been one of the most talked about dramas this winter and with good reason. It has a terrific cast, a genuinely funny script and features stellar performances by everyone involved. Finally there is a movie that critics and audiences can both agree on. Director Jason Reitman, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Sheldon Turner (The Longest Yard), proves his ability to handle comedy was not limited to Juno or Thank You For Smoking. 2009 was an interesting year for films. By mid-summer, I was wondering if I was going to be able to fill out this list. Hasbro made a splash with two of its most successful lines appearing in theaters. Sandra Bullock had two films surface this year. Vampires seemed to be at the turn of every corner and Woody Harrelson made his Hollywood comeback. So, what topped the list and what was a cinematic bomb? Follow this list to the films of greatness (and not so great) for 2009! Continue reading ‘Gregg’s Best & Worst Cinema Films of 2009′

Now here is a movie I know little about except for the fact that I anxiously want to see it. Every time I had an opportunity to see this film during its theatrical run my chances were nixed. I even had press screening passes to this one and I was unable to use them. However, it seems like my luck is about to change as Anchor Bay just announced a February 16th Blu-ray release date for the Jamie Foxx and Gerard butler action thriller Law Abiding Citizen. I am pumped! Continue reading ‘Blu-ray Judges the Law Abiding Citizen’

So its time for the “Best of the Year” list. I’ll admit even though I watch a truck load of films on a weekly basis, I’m more of the ‘home theatre’ type, meaning I see all types of films from different countries and different eras but I am not always up-to-date with the current films in cinemas. Still there were a select few that I went out of my way to catch during their release and fortunately this year was rarely disappointed. Continue reading ‘Thor’s Top 10 Movies of 2009′

Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker are starring in a new movie together, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone since the pairing screams “romantic comedy gold mine!” Alas, the two don’t have great chemistry and the premise for Did You Hear About the Morgans? is unoriginal. Grant and Parker play Paul and Meryl Morgan, a high-powered New York couple—she’s in real estate, he’s a lawyer–who have been separated since slept with another woman. From November up to now, there has been a lot of buzz on Why So Blu about Captain Clegg and the Night Creatures. This holiday season, we were able to chat with the Captain about his early beginnings in music, his deadliness with a six-string and working with metal magician Rob Zombie. For the faint at heart, here’s your fair warning to beware. Clegg tells it like it is in his no-holds-barred delivery. Continue reading ‘Diggin’ Graves with Captain Clegg’

The Young Victoria satisfies the necessary requirements for a movie that deals with the history of the royal family in the 19th century. There are opulent costumes, some political intrigue, repressed emotions and the suffocating rules of social propriety. Oscar-winning screenwriter Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) manages to keep The Young Victoria focused on the title character as she navigates the early years of her reign as queen as well as her romance with Prince Albert, who she later married. With Blu-ray Brian yet to reveal his choice for ‘album of the year,’ I have landed on my decision after a review of the 2009 releases. While it’s no small task to cover them all, and no, I’m not going to act like I listened to every CD that came out this year, it is always a difficult but fun category to cover. How can you compare a classical piece to a country tune? Hip-hop to metal? The truth is, you really can’t, but the category calls for one record to stand above all others so that is what will be delivered. Continue reading ‘Gregg’s Album of the Year’
