Directed by Adrianna Maggs, who is best known for her writing on TV series like Frontier and Saving Hope, the film Goalie takes audiences behind the scenes of late NHL goalie Terry Sawchuk. Sawchuk’s career took place from 1949 to 1970 where he was a seven-time all star and four-time Vezina Trophy winner (best goalie). In that span, he amassed 103 shutouts and 445 wins eventually supplanting him in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Still, his accolades on the ice were never medicine for his off-ice struggles. Maggs guides us through Sawchuk’s tragic story.

Technically he never left, but the black-clad Sith Lord has had two ongoing monthly series from Marvel in recent memory with this being the third. The most recent was the 25-issue series that was absolutely brilliant from start to finish (and one I hated to see come to an end). While that prior series took place during the tale end of Order 66, the new series picks up during the events of The Empire Strikes Back when he and Luke faced off in person for the first time.
There was a time when the old Brian would have found such a movie like Ford v Ferrari to be an absolute wet dream. Up until about two years ago my world literally revolved around my 2006 Mustang GT. She, affectionately named Dark Angel after Jessica Alba’s failed TV show back in the day, was everything to me. And I mean everything. She was the only physical connection left to my old life in Cleveland, OH (Austin has nothing on that city) and my bridge to the proverbial road ahead. I never imagined a day of my life without her. Then some “great” guy in Austin, TX, whose hair just happen to get in his eyes while driving (no kidding), took my world away from me. My life has never been the same. I absolutely hate driving nowadays and pretty much want nothing at all to do with cars anymore to the point where I sadly drive a Honda Civic Hatchback I named Vegas. However, I digress because secretly my motor revs for Ford v Ferrari. So fill up your racing tanks and speed on down below with me as I test drive Ford v Ferrari on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner (Nicolas Cage) and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a living nightmare. Based on the classic H.P. Lovecraft short story, Color Out of Space is “gorgeous, vibrant and terrifying” (Jonathan Barkan, Dread Central). As an avid hockey fan and former player, I nearly did a backflip when I caught news of the upcoming film about hall of fame goalie Terry Sawchuk. While he played for numerous teams in the NHL, he was best known for his time with the Red Wings from 1949 throughout much of the 50’s and into the early 1960’s. Now the late, great Sawchuk gets his own movie.
DARK STAR PICTURES will release the critically acclaimed GOALIE, starring Mark O’Brien (Marriage Story), Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects, “The Marvelous Miss Maisel”), and Georgina Reilly (“City on a Hill”) On Demand and Digital February 25. It based on the true story of hockey player Terry Sawchuk and is directed by Adriana Maggs.

Cats are coming! Although Alamo Drafhouse has started hosting Rowdy Cats screenings now you can take home Universal’s musical oddity. Judge for yourself if this is a misunderstood classic. Perhaps it’ll be catnip for ya! I am looking forward to revisiting this much-maligned but can’t look away film. I wish it was getting a 4K Whiskers Edition but I digress. The story of the Jellicle cats can soon take up space on your shelf as your real furry companions do. As I recall, Taylor Swift’s performance outdid her early acting bit from Valentine’s Day. Sir Ian McKellen went method. And newcomer Francesca Hayward was clearly a much better dancer than anyone else. I’m not looking forward to seeing Rebel Wilson eating bugs on-screen again but it’s a Blu-ray, I can skip that!
Tick tock. Fans can dive even further into the alternate world that has captivated audiences since its debut when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment releases Watchmen: An HBO Limited Series on Blu-ray and DVD, June 2, 2020. Featuring all nine riveting one-hour episodes – plus over 90 minutes of bonus content, including two never-before-seen special features exclusive to the Blu-ray and DVD. Created for television and executive produced by Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers), Watchmen drew 1.5 million viewers in its series premiere, becoming the second-highest rated HBO original series debut of the past three years, only behind Big Little Lies. The show is also currently “certified fresh” with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name, while attempting to break new ground of its own. Videogames flicks based on the actual games have, at best, a spotty track record. I personally enjoy a few Resident Evils and at least one Tomb Raider (the Alicia Vikander entry), but I can’t argue that most films which use the language of games and their ideas with original characters and plots are much better. Your Wreck-It Ralphs and Scott Pilgrims are, to paraphrase Marty Scorsese, actually cinematic. Still, as one whose love of videogames is second only to film, I’m hoping a beloved property will crack that digital ceiling someday and be truly great. In my mind, studios have infinite lives to get this right. Will Sonic the Hedgehog runs laps around the previous game-inspired features?

Boyz N The Hood is one of those quintessential genre movies. More than just merely a “Black Film”, Boyz centered around universal themes, but those themes are turned on their ears by the new landscape presented by visionary director John Singleton. The characters, the setting, the music and the mood are all such a huge part of the enjoyment of this film. The film itself is such a huge iconic moment for 90’s cinema and for people of color who lived these lives. The film was announced for a 4K disc late in 2019, and to my surprise there were a huge amount of 4K enthusiasts as excited as I was to see this announcement. Boyz N’ The Hood is available now for purchase, and you can get your copy at the paid link below!
