Countdown Needs A Day One Patch (Movie Review)

Countdown’s success at delivering thrills should have been as easy as, well, downloading an app. By now, there is a formula – perfected by the Final Destination series for random folks doing whatever they can to avoid their untimely demise. Add a spooky shot of The Ring for maximum ticking clock syndrome and presto! After all, not all scary movies need to leave viewers with a sense of dread as they exit the multiplex. A silly high concept boo-fest via a literal “killer app” should have been as fun as Happy Death Day’s Groundhog Day-meets-slasher flick conceit. And yet…

Screamfest 2019 – Best Of Fest ‘Wrap Up’

Well, it’s over folks!  The illustrious Screamfest Film Festival 2019 and our comprehensive coverage have both come to an end and what a ruckus ride it has been. With sixty-five reviews, two in-depth interviews and six articles both of the Coleman’s have been hard at work.  But they say goodbye with their winners of what they think are the cream of the Child of the Corn crop.  That’s right it’s the…

The Lion King (2019) (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Welp, Disney is at it again, updating their old animated classics and raking in the dough at the box office. The Lion King, the third of four films of such ilk coming from the mouse house this year was a dominant force at the box office. Not quite making that Avengers: Endgame money, but making its own feast of green in impressive fashion. Poor reviews can’t stop people from biting into their nostalgia apples as both this film and Aladdin earlier in the summer had proven. Granted, you knew this one was gonna make a quick, cool, easy billion and give them reassurance that they are making the right moves with these straightforward modern takes. You’ll be able to own The Lion King on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray when it sees the shelves on October 22nd.

The Devil Rides Out (Blu-ray Review)

Well, we are now almost  solid year into Scream Factory giving us a regular dose of classic Hammer Horror films on Blu-ray for the first time (Some the second) in the United States. And I have to say, its been quite a valiant effort. Next up this month of October, more of the more well revered films in the lexicon, The Devil Rides Out (Or as the title card says when you select the standard Play Movie option, “The Devil’s Bride”). This one has the hallmarks of Terrence Fisher and Christopher Lee attached to it as well as Dennis Wheatley. Previous released on a UK Studio Canal Blu-ray (That transfer is offered as a bonus feature here), it carries over those bonus features as well as adding some unique to this release. Its not a Collector’s Edition, but honestly its just as impressive and better than some of those. You can have this one in your Collection by ordering it from the Shout! Factory website or by using the Amazon link at the bottom of this page.

The Blob (1988) – Collector’s Edition (Blu-ray Review)

Many US collectors missed the boat on Chuck Russell’s 1988 remake of The Blob. Twilight Time’s limited sales model wound up being a pretty solid success for them and that means it was largely unavailable. Umbrella released a nice (And better than Twilight Time’s) version in Australia that those who don’t fear importing have probably owned for years. Now, more excitement for this classic as Scream Factory takes a swing at it. But before anyone could wonder what another version would entail, the eye-opening laundry list of new interviews and extras were unveiled and this release immediately got our attention (Well, done Reverend Entertainment!). This exciting release is coming in JUST in time for Halloween on October 29th. Make sure you pre-order yourself a copy from Scream Factory’s website or the Amazon link below to ensure you’re able to have it in your clutches to watch on Halloween night this year.

Scarface “The World is Yours” Limited Edition (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Scarface The World Is Ours Limited Edition 4K ReviewBack in September of 2011 we did an experiment here on the site.  At that time we let veteran staff writer Sean Ferguson loose with covering Scarface’s debut on the Blu-ray format.  You’re probably wondering why is that even relevant here.  Well it’s because it was Sean’s first ever viewing of the infamous Al Pacino film and the world was wondering his thoughts.  The last part is of course an exaggerated stretch, but one did definitely not expect the outcome of such a feat.  Long story short, Sean wasn’t impressed.  The film, which I have long considered a cult classic was only given a score of 2.5 by Sean.  As one would expect that raised a lot of eyebrows, scrutiny and comments of blasphemy from fellow Why So Blu readers and whatnot.  That legendary Blu-ray review of Scarface is still alive and kicking here on the site and can be viewed HERE complete the 21 comments of debate that ensued.  Ah…memories.  I promise you that you’ll see a different point of view from my review below and I even enlisted Adam Byrne (sans cowboy boots) to chime in as well to compliment any sentiments or highlights I may have missed.  Enjoy! Wonder Woman: Bloodlines (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Sam Liu and Justin Copeland bring Wonder Woman to the animated side of the DC Universe in her very own Bloodlines. The film is deftly animated, paced quickly and the voice acting is stellar. But is that enough to make it a DC Cartoon classic? Read on below about Wonder Woman: Bloodlines which is available on 10/22!

Jojo Rabbit… Just Wow! (Movie Review)

Jo Jo Rabbit Movie ReviewSo I went to see Jojo Rabbit (2019) on the very first day of this month. I was very aware of this film coming out. I know on a few of my reviews I mention that “I had no idea this film was even coming out”; this is not the case with Jojo Rabbit (2019). The stills from the film, featuring, director, Taika Waititi, as one of the most infamous war criminals in history, Adolf Hitler, is enough to rub people the wrong way. Seeing only one of Waititi’s films in completion, Thor Ragnarok (2017), I had a feeling that Jojo Rabbit (2019) would be some sort of satirical film about the overbearing presence of Nazism in WW II Germany. Where this would make for a disastrous and poorly received film… I actually found it to be truly moving, clever, and heartfelt. Let’s hop to and talk about it.

Zombieland: Double Tap…They’re Back Baby! (Movie Review)

Zombieland 2 Movie ReviewIt feels so good to be back! It was 10 years ago when the first film,  Zombieland (2009), came out. I went to go see it with a friend or two not sure what to expect. I walked out of that film with such a love for what I was seeing on screen! The cast was great, the sets were awesome, and the humor was in full swing. Now we flash forward to 10 years later, not only in time of the film, but also in real life. I know what you guys are thinking… Does it hold up after all this time. Is this film still relevant? Does Zombieland: Double Tap (2019), truly, nut up or shut up? It nuts up guys… it nuts up.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Can’t Cast A Spell (Movie Review)

Angelina Jolie has returned to the big screen. Though she’ll always be “Acid Burn” to this reviewer, as the powerful, horned anti-hero, Maleficent, fans of the original 2014 flick are far more vocal than a ragtag group of rollerbladers intent on hacking the planet. The first film, which felt more like a ninety-minute television pilot, raked in over 750 million worldwide, so a sequel was inevitable. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is definitely more of a film than it’s predecessor, but it’s still a mess.

Zombieland: Double Tap Is Unnecessary But Still Has Bite (Movie Review)

A decade is a long time for fans to wait to see the next installment of their favorite franchise. That tenth of a century waiting period can pay off big time like with Disney’s release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens… or not (we’re still waiting for Avatar 2). Enter Zombieland: Dobule Tap, a sequel to a surprise hit from 2009. In that time, the undead craze unearthed some bona fide hits like AMC’s The Walking Dead. Was ten years too long to wait for another romp with Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock? Yes… and no.

Almodóvar, Lumet, Cukor & More Coming to The Criterion Collection January 2020

In January, the Criterion Collection will kick off the New Year with one of Pedro Almodóvar’s most beloved films: All About My Mother, the Spanish auteur’s Oscar-winning ode to maternal love and female fortitude. George Cukor’s effervescent romantic comedy Holiday, starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant in one of their most memorable pairings, will appear on Blu-ray for the first time in a new 4K restoration. Jean-Luc Godard’s long-unavailable sophomore feature Le petit soldat, the director’s first collaboration with his iconic muse Anna Karina, represents a major rediscovery from a legendary career. And that’s not all: we’ll celebrate Sidney Lumet with a new 4K restoration of his arresting nuclear-war thriller Fail Safe and a Blu-ray edition of his Tennessee Williams adaptation The Fugitive Kind, starring Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani.
