Modern Horror Classic THE WITCH Arrives On 4K UHD Blu-ray April 23rd!

One of the most original horror films of the past decade has never looked so good as when The Witch arrives on 4K Ultra HD™ Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray™ and Digital) April 23 from Lionsgate. Directed by Robert Eggers, winner of Best Director at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, this supernatural horror tale stars Ralph Ineson, Katie Dickie, and up-and-coming star Anya Taylor-Joy in a “breakout performance” (Jake Coyle, Associated Press), and has been hailed by Indiewire as “the most exciting and genuinely horrifying American horror film since The Blair Witch Project.” Experience four times the resolution of Full HD with the 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, which includes Dolby Vision® HDR, bringing entertainment to life through ultra-vivid picture quality. When compared to a standard picture, Dolby Vision can deliver spectacular colors never before seen on-screen, highlights that are up to 40 times brighter, and blacks that are 10 times darker. Available for the very first time in this absolutely stunning format, The Witch 4K Ultra HD™ Combo Pack includes an audio commentary with director Robert Eggers, a featurette, a Q&A with cast and crew, and a design gallery, and will be available April 23rd. The Golem (Film Review)

Every culture has its own mythological beasts. The Greeks had the Minotaur and Medusa. The Romans had the basilisk. The Chinese had dragons. One particular creature of the human imagination that has often been overlooked in mythology discussions is that of the golem, a creature made of stone or earth summoned to defeat evil…and maybe even go on an unintended murderous rampage. This product of Jewish culture has been traced as far back as the early years of Judaism with more prominent tales of the earthy monster taking place in the 16th and 17th centuries. It sounds like something ripe for the pickings of a movie. Screenwriter Ariel Cohen thought so too.

Widows (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Widows 4K ReviewI’m probably alone in this way of thinking, but I cant help myself. When I first saw the artwork to click on for playing the Widows trailer I instantly thought of another Viola Davis movie she did a few years back with Jennifer Lopez. That movie was called Lila & Eve, but had what I originally thought a similar motive…revenge. While there are very much aspects of a revenge genre film in the making here make no mistakes about it Widows is very much a heist movie. It’s also an incredibly good one if do say so myself. The Steve McQueen directed film was released this past week on your favorite home media formats.  Aaron Neuwirth brought you the Blu-ray review earlier in the week here and now its time to tackle the Widows 4K Ultra HD package.  Follow me down below. The Return Of The Vampire (Blu-ray Review)

This is a pretty cool new spin with the Scream Factory and Sony/Columbia relationship. It appears they are unlocking another wing of their ever-growing vault for more classic horror of the black and white era. In addition to what they are grabbing from Universal, it seems the classic monster/horror era is building a better foundation in the Scream Factory library. Shout! Factory looks to be getting their hands on some Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff and radioactive monster era horror now. While not the first time, the volume looks to have picked up significantly for 2019. We begin here with a Bela Lugosi film having him play a fanged menace once again (NOT Dracula, though) in The Return of the Vampire. You’ll be able to pick it up this month on February 19th. Pre-order using the Amazon link found below the review. Continue reading ‘The Return Of The Vampire (Blu-ray Review)’

Bohemian Rhapsody (4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review)

Bohemian Rhapsody 4K ReviewWhile I never was a huge Queen fan growing up I was never ignorant to their musical place and historical significance and in the world of rock.  That much was never lost on me.  I was a fan of most of their songs and like many from my generation completely smitten by “Bohemian Rhapsody” when it was resurrected in the 1992 Wayne’s World film.  However, when the first trailers of Bohemian Rhapsody, the musical feature we’re all gathered here to talk about today, first came out I had little to no interest in it.  I had no doubts that I wouldn’t love it, but instead focused my thoughts on other urgent priorities.  Then all those positive reviews came pouring in and like usual try as I might I could never get myself to the theater to see this one during its run.  Today’s viewing is my first. Overlord (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Overlord 4KNow this is a “Brian” film!  I started off last year believing Overlord was a fourth installment in the J.J. Abrams Cloverfield universe.  By mid year we were all aware that was not true.  Boo!  Overlord is so much better than that direct to Netflix Paradox feature.  If you don’t take my word for it, look no further than the highly reputable Rotten Tomatoes site the lay people of this nation perceive as gospel.  It’s Certified Fresh at 81%, yo!  The website’s critical aggregated consensus reads, “Part revisionist war drama, part zombie thriller, and part all-out genre gorefest, Overlord offers A-level fun for B-movie fans of multiple persuasions.”  I couldn’t agree more, but I know some of the peeps close to me in life surprisingly didn’t feel feverishly the same.  I hope I can convince you.  I giddily love this film! The Sisters Brothers (Blu-ray Review)

Here’s one of the latest post-modern, offbeat westerns that have come about in recent years. While the revisionist western serves as an interesting way to deconstruct the black and white ethics defined in classic westerns, The Sisters Brothers joins films like Damsel, Slow West or the Coen Brothers’ True Grit in terms of westerns that are aware of their perplexing nature. While still acknowledging the darker qualities of living in a time where outlaws could roam free, it is not above films like these to feature so much humor that reflects both the nature of that present era and where things will go. The Sisters Brothers goes one step further by taking on a level of self-reflection, which serves well for the terrific characters featured.

Widows (Blu-ray Review)

You want them to get away with it. That’s the same thought that always comes to mind when watching a heist thriller. Widows stacks so much against the central characters that all you can do is hope they make it. This is the sort of tricky area that director Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave) is in, as Widows finds a need to balance the rhythms of a typical genre film with the serious-mindedness of his filmmaking style. It worked out as far as delivering a terrific drama for adults, but audiences, sadly, didn’t turn up to see it in theaters. Fortunately, the film can now be seen on Blu-ray.

The Old Man & The Gun (Blu-ray Review)

Robert Redford has never been a chameleon-like performer, but there’s something to be said for the way he brings an unflappable cool to almost all of his features, let alone a naturalness to any persona he is tasked to put on. The Old Man & the Gun may or may not be the end of Redford’s career in front of the camera, but it would be a fine swan song. This laidback crime caper could have gone down some different avenues to tell the story of a real-life career criminal, but when the camera accomplishes so much with slow push-ins on old man Redford’s very friendly face, why make things more complicated?

In The Heat Of The Night – The Criterion Collection (Blu-ray Review)

Starting the year with a bang, The Criterion Collection has released In the Heat of the Night, one of the bigger box office hits of the 60s, along with a major award winner. The mystery drama starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is memorable for many reasons. In addition to the characters and quotable lines, the film tells a topical story involving murder, police officers, and the role a black man plays in a small town in Mississippi during the 1960s. As a result, you have a cinematic classic still relevant today, and Criterion has that film on a packed, new Blu-ray release.

The Poison Ivy Collection (Blu-ray Review)

I’m sure there are people out there that were hoping to one day land Katt Shea’s 1992 thriller Poison Ivy on Blu-ray. I’m not so sure there were those out there clamoring for an entire set of the Poison Ivy quadrilogy on Blu-ray in order to get that film. But, hey, if you’re doing one of them, lets nab all four while we are at it. Shout! Factory’s new relationship with Warner Bros has led them to snagging this series from the library and putting three of them out on the format for the first time ever. Previously, just the fourth one had received a Blu-ray release (Back in 2009). They come in a nice little set together, in Unrated and Theatrical editions and will be able to be had by Valentine’s day as they release on February 12th. Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist For 2019!

As promised after much delay, the annual wishlist is here! I’m actually glad I waited until the end of January to publish it, because in the time between November and now, many past wishlist titles have been announced for this coming year. So, we can scratch them off the list. There are titles that were originally on this list (Like Klute) that didn’t get a chance to be. The Blu-ray landscape began to evolve a lot in 2018, merely with the decision Warner Bros has made to license out movies to independent distributors like Criterion and Shout! Factory. Sony used to be strict about adding new features to their titles in licensing deals (Hence why many of theirs went to Twilight Time in the past), but appear to have scaled back and now we are getting better editions and titles companies want to pull the trigger on BECAUSE they can make the Collector’s Editions they were wanting to. Its becoming obvious with major studios that home video itself is pushing and moving toward streaming being the dominant format going forward and Blu-ray/4K UHD will go way of vinyl and be a collector’s medium. Premium prices will be more standard, but as long as the big studios are turning a corner like Warner Bros and your Arrows, Criterions and Shouts continue to put out top notch product, things will prosper for us fans of cinema and the physical media formats.  Continue reading ‘Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist For 2019!’
