Forgotten Friday Flick – “Breaking In” (Burt Reynolds Tribute Edition)
As everyone knows the iconic actor/director Burt Reynolds passed yesterday, but fortunately he left behind an immense body of work that was unparalleled in terms of diversity and longevity. Having created so many cool characters, memorable movies and all with joyful everyman quality, Reynolds was one of the last of the Hollywood movie stars. So when I found myself scouring his various cinematic wares to select five of the best pieces of work from the man known for his legendary smirk and swagger, it became almost impossible to pick just a handful of films that he should be remembered for. His dramatic turn in Deliverance, his joy in comedies like The Cannonball Run, Smokey And The Bandit and Stroker Ace (my guilty pleasure!), his action prowess in 80’s fare like Stick, Heat, Malone and Rent-A-Cop and of course his Academy Award nominated role as charismatic pornographer Jack Horner in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights, prove that Reynolds was far from a one hit wonder. So in tribute to one of my favorite actors of all time I’m putting up some movie remembrance in the form of a lesser known Reynolds gem the only way I know how – welcome to…Forgotten Friday Flick. Today we delve into the recesses of Reynolds movie lore to dissect a 1989 outing that has plenty of beautiful Burt bravado. HBO’s Silicon Valley has been a bit of a pop culture phenomenon for a few years now. The show has found itself trend setting some catch phrases (My friends and I have been obsessed with “This guy f***s” for a few years now and its not going anywhere anytime soon, ever) and some of the most popular talked about comedic moments on television. It helped jump to its own popularity getting a boost off of being the show that followed Game Of Thrones for its first couple years and sandwiched between that and VEEP. Damn, that’s a hella fantastic 2 hour block of television, is it not? The show sits in such honor at HBO that they’ve decide to demote the series to a DVD only release for Season 5. So, Why So BLU(!!!) fans, if that’s your thing, then go on and pre-order this bad boy now!

The DC Universe is alive, well and rocking on the CW network. Supergirl, while a part of the universe (Moreso multiverse), didn’t originate there, but has no just finished her second season on the CW. Its a show that really tackles modern day issues regarding inclusion and takes no prisoners in doing so. On September 25th, Lionsgate will release John Carpenter’s 1978 masterpiece, Halloween, onto the 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray format for the first time. Halloween, like some other popular vintage horror properties (The Evil Dead, for instance), has long been part of a running gag with multiple re-releases on home video having many fans coining the phrase “double dipping.” Rolling their eyes with every new edition, questioning how much the cow has left to offer while subserviently forking over money to have the most current version available. With the first jump to the most current format on the horizon, I thought it would be the right time (And fun) to take a look back at the Haddonfield, IL home video catalog. In 2017 (Kinda the end of 2016, but hear me out), one of my BIGGEST bucket list items for Blu-ray finally was checked off; the entire Phantasm series arrived on Blu-ray. The iconic Tall Man’s entire chronicles of antagonizing the ice cream man Reggie and his friend Mike arrived in glorious restored 1080p glory. The first film features an outstanding restoration from JJ Abrams and company during the post production of The Force Awakens. Last year, everything was only available via limited edition boxed sets from Arrow and Well Go USA. Now, Well Go USA is finally giving Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead and Phantasm IV: Oblivion standalone releases. So, for those of you who missed out on the now out of print set, you can snag yourself the only two entries not available by themselves on September 18th. This review will cover the penultimate chapter, and what many of us thought for years may very well be the final Phantasm, Oblivion.
