Pinocchio – Signature Edition (Blu-ray Review)

PinocchioPinocchio now is joining the ranks of classic Walt Disney films from its original golden era, seeing their status upgraded to worthy of a double dip with the hip and fresh Signature Edition.  Importantly, though, its a really good idea and deal for those who hadn’t own this legendary Disney film before.  So, those who didn’t pick it up the first time around and wished upon a star for it to return to stores, now’s your chance.  There are no strings to hold you down, so don’t be a jackass this time and pick it up.  Disney has added a new array of bonus materials to it, too, so those who may want to upgrade based on that have something new.  This set will be available on January 31st, but pre-orders are up and running now. Feminists Rejoice! Xander Cage Returns! (Movie Review)

XXX Return of Xander Cage Movie ReviewThat’s right.  I said it.  While I have been completely disgusted by what has been transpiring with the American public these past couple days (rioting, violence, destruction) since the Inauguration there’s no doubt about it, the women very much have the power in XXX: Return of Xander Cage.  Feminists cannot argue that.  Without the many women players in this particular outing our titular hero would not have been the smashing success he is.  You hear that feminists? Equal opportunities are everywhere in this new Paramount outing, which if you’re keeping score is the third film in this wild XXX action franchise.  So now that I have my little political rant off my chest, as I too feel like a piece of meat at times, let’s talk about the good, the bad and the ugly in XXX: Return of Xander Cage. Lost In London: A Comedic Odyssey Matched With Experimentation

woodyOn January 19th, I was able to attend the screening of the first film to be shot live and broadcast simultaneously into theaters in England and the U.S. While one would expect an experience like this to be the brain child of some indie filmmaker making his name, a new, unexpected Cloverfield movie, or some found footage experience coming out of Blumhouse Productions, it actually came from the mind of Woody Harrelson. Lost in London is the result of an idea Harrelson had for a film, following an actual experience he had in London back in 2002. As the film opens, we are told “too much of this is true” and are then off and running on a unique odyssey shot in one take, with one camera.

Forgotten Friday Flick – “Bachelor Party”

Forgotten Friday FlickKeeping in tune with the current 80’s theme, but adding a little humor to the mix (I think we all need it today!) it felt like time to celebrate cinema with a little raunchy in the reels – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick!  For today’s selection we’re getting rid of political correctness, throwing caution to the wind and taking a swig off a stiff one all in the name of unbridled 80’s comedy.  Starring a man who went on to become an acting icon alongside an eclectic cast of misfits, deviants and malcontents, it’s the tale a small get together that turns into one of the craziest soirees in movie history.  Drugs, booze, guns, fire trucks and everything that makes life worth living for – Tom Hanks may be embarrassed by it but today we hail…Bachelor Party!

Inferno (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Inferno 4K UHD Blu-ray ReviewThe Da Vinci Code book was one of those that come around every so often that make non-readers take note of and spend time doing something they normally wouldn’t…they READ.  Yes, I’m one of those suckers too.  While I love to read I often have this problem in life called no time.  By the time I snuggle up with a book it’s like I have taken a large dose of Tylenol PM.  A book, good or bad, usually puts me right to sleep just like a classic X-Files episode does calming my hectic nerves.  Dull reading material is prone to giving me narcolepsy during the middle of the day.  However, every once in awhile that magical manuscript does come along that wildly captivates and fascinates my imagination.  It ceases to let go of me as it manages to keep me engrossed, excited about and invigorated over throughout the read.  Those are the books that I can’t inexplicably put down and just want more of.  The Da Vinci Code was one of these so called “magical” books for me.  It kicked off mad fervor for author Dan Brown.  I fondly remember those moments like they were yesterday.

‘xXx’: Reports Of Xander Cage’s Death Were Greatly Exaggerated (Movie Review)

xXx_UKQuadThere is a point in xXx: Return of Xander Cage where Vin Diesel starts wearing a giant fur coat, as if to suggest this 49-year old skater/adrenaline junkie/tattoo harvester/former spy was not cool enough for audiences already.  The coat is not a huge part of the film (and thinking about it now, I’m curious if it is possible for it to even come back for a sequel), but it represents the utter ridiculousness that is this movie. With that in mind, this is also a film that embraces its ridiculousness. With all the action films that treat themselves so seriously or provide cool thrills at the expense of groups that continue to be vilified, here’s a cartoon-come-to-life that mixes bro moments with diverse fun.

Resident Evil: Afterlife (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Resident Evil Afterlife 4K UHD Blu-ray ReviewThe Resident Evil franchise is a series I nearly gave up on had it not been for my friend Susan’s advice back to me in 2008.  You see, quite honestly, I take my films very seriously and well, Resident Evil movies just didn’t cut it for me in that department.  I was just not able to take the lunacy, stupidity and over-the-top nature of them.  Resident Evil: Extinction was that final nail in the coffin.  I liked the first film, hated the second outing and just thought the third one was okay.  But what was really wrong with me?  I’ll tell you what it was…I forgot how to have fun in life. I forgot how to not be serious all the time.  I mean after all, I liked Crank, so what was my deal?  Susan opened my eyes up to this world as she encouraged me to take a closer look at these films and to see them how her husband views them…purely as nonsensical entertainment.  I embraced Susan’s encouraging words and took the leap of faith.  The Blu-ray trilogy set eventually became my Valentine’s Day gift in 2008 (isn’t that sweet?) and I never looked back.  I found a way to appreciate these films and have fun with them while looking past everything else (I’m not perfect).  Thanks Susan!

‘The Founder’ Has A Well Done Screenplay Served With Undercooked Direction (Movie Review)

the founder thumbThe story behind McDonald’s is almost as fascinating as the world’s obsession with the McRib. The Founder is a straightforward attempt to tell that story (of the history, not the pork sandwich), with a focus on Ray Kroc, the man who turned McDonald’s into what it would come be today, for better or worse. Given what took place, the topic is ripe for a solid film, but despite a screenplay full of ideas and potential to morph into something cinematically great, the film feels undercut by fairly standard direction that takes less of a bite into the material than the customers do into their Big Macs.

UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG, RUMBLE FISH and More Coming to The Criterion Collection in April 2017

rumble fishThis April, Criterion is serving up a special edition of Tampopo, Juzo Itami’s delirious, genre-bending “ramen western,” fresh from its theatrical run. The kitchen becomes a battleground in Woman of the Year, where Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy play journalist spouses with different ideas about what makes for a successful marriage. There’s also Francis Ford Coppola’s feverish “art film for teenagers,” Rumble Fish, whose stunning black-and-white cinematography weaves expressionistic shadows around an all-star cast, including Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, and Dennis Hopper. Another unforgettable ensemble is the title act of Buena Vista Social Club, Wim Wenders’ exuberant portrait of the performers who made Cuban music an international sensation. And for an encore: Jacques Demy’s color-drenched musicals The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (a big inspiration for current awards favorite La La Land) and The Young Girls of Rochefort step into the spotlight, in new stand-alone editions.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (4K UHD Blu-ray Review)

Jack Reacher Never Go Back 4K UHD Blu-ray ReviewJack Reacher is one of those films I had to go back and revisit to not only freshen up going into the premiere of Jack Reacher Never Go Back, but make sure I liked it too.  I honestly could not remember as I hadn’t seen the first film since 2013 when I reviewed the Blu-ray here.  Fret not!  Despite only having three action scenes to write home about I still enjoyed it quite a bit.  I get so confused with the Mission Impossible films that I had to distance myself from them to get into the whole psyche of who the character of Jack Reacher really is.  I’m all good now and ready to tackle the second entry in the Jack Reacher film franchise made possible only because the first flick grossed $200 million worldwide.  That’s not a whole lot of money, but Paramount felt comfortable in it nonetheless to invest in a sequel so who am I to argue.  I love all new 4K Ultra HD releases.  Bring ’em!
