I’m spending the time before the upcoming holiday weekend to write about the aptly titled Independence Day, now some 20 years old and counting. Fox provided us with a regular Blu-ray version of this 20th Anniversary releases, which Aaron Neuwirth reviewed enthusiastically over here, but today I’m coming at you with the best presentation this film has ever seen on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format. However, I digress for the moment as I want to spend the next few paragraphs talking about what the 1996 science-fiction action flick meant to me. It is my belief that Independence Day accomplished three major things things, if not more. First, it ushered in the era of what all now know of as the obligatory, annual large-scale disaster films that plague the summer box office. Second, it became a star vehicle for Will Smith and opened doors to him in Hollywood I’m sure he never imagined despite the bright, rising star he already was. And finally, Independence Day set the bar for all sci-fi action movies to follow with its then groundbreaking effects. Sometimes you have to try and channel Roald Dahl to describe his films. Steven Spielberg certainly seems to be a fan, as he has done all he can to replicate the 1982 novel of the same name. Given both the Beard’s directorial sensibilities and being his first Disney movie there is perhaps almost too light of a touch, but The BFG makes up for this by way of delivering on spectacle without overdoing it. Really, what better way to see a movie about a little girl and her new giant best friend come to life than through the lens of a British comedy with big Hollywood effects?

When the eventual vampire apocalypse comes, we had better hope that centuries of vampire lore from books, comics, and movies is accurate. It’s the only thing we cling to, with the proper use of garlic, stakes through the heart, and hoping they can’t cross running water. Of course, we’ve seen countless interpretations of vampires in comics over the years, so to bring something new and intriguing to the genre is a challenge to creators. Luckily with Blood Feud from Oni Press, the challenge was accepted and executed very well.

Just when you thought it was safe to get Blake in the water, along comes The Shallows. Here’s an efficient thriller that milks a solid premise for all it’s worth. A surfer is trapped on a rock near the shore, while a shark circles her. Other details keep it interesting, even while the film goes over-the-top in its final act, but it does all it can to satisfy its b-movie machinations. Not hurting is star Blake Lively, who is more than capable of providing an action-movie lead to keep us involved with the thrills.

The inspirational feature film Endgame, starring Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), Ivonne Coll (Jane The Virgin), Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite) and Justina Machado (The Purge: Anarchy), will debut on DVD and Blu-ray on July 5 via Shout! Factory, and will have bonus features including Spanish-language subtitles. Endgame is a fictional story based on true events – how an impoverished high school in the border town of Brownsville, Texas, started a chess team and went on to become state champions. The touching family-friendly film also touches on the subjects of immigration, teen drinking, being true to one’s self, and bullying. Endgame was directed by Carmen Marrón (Go For It!), a former guidance counselor with a dream of making films with positive role models for Latino kids. Shot in Brownsville in just 19 days, the film captures how a determined and caring teacher and his chess club found a way to help students rise above their challenges to meet a brighter future. In The Pack, man’s best friend becomes his worst nightmare when a horde of bloodthirsty wild dogs descends upon a family’s farmhouse. Generating a steadily mounting sense of dread, The Pack cleverly toys with genre conventions before it goes in for the kill. The Pack also includes the featurette “The Making of The Pack” and theatrical trailer as bonus features. Fans can pre-order their copies now by visiting ShoutFactory.com. This film sort of kicks off a kind of werewolf month for the label in July. I don’t know if it was by intention, design or by accident, but there are three lycanthrope related films being released on Blu-ray by them within the coming weeks. This, being the most modern and the other two being vintage films making the Blu-ray jump (Bad Moon and The Boy Who Cried Werewolf out later). Okay, this isn’t werewolves sorta speak (Its just straight up wolves), its canine-esque fueled thriller with people under attack from them. And maybe I spotted a moon here or there. Leave me alone I’m trying to throw this all together somehow. Continue reading ‘The Pack (Blu-ray Review)’

I have both nostalgic love and admiration for the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. The film turned Will Smith into a superstar, provided Irwin Allen disaster movie-like thrills on a grand scale, and delivered a fun sci-fi alien invasion flick. It was also earnest, heartfelt and audacious. 20 years later we have Independence Day: Resurgence, which ups the ante from a visuals standpoint, but finds itself lost when it comes to channeling what made the first film special.

I’m back with my famed week-ending peek into past pictures worthy of a retro revisit – but now on a brand new site! And being that this is the first official one here at my new home Why So Blu it felt appropriate to not only keep the foreign film angle alive we hatched on our previous site, but to knock it out of the park with a choice that’s cinematically savory in every way – welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick! For all newbies it’s my long running weekly column that brings to light hidden movie gems that some of you may have forgotten, dismissed or perhaps never even heard of – all for the consideration of the inquisitive cinefile. Today I’m delving into a weird movie world where genres are used as mere fodder to build one fine film. Comedy, drama, romance and a pinch of horror all embody our selection – a movie so explicit in every wondrous way that the film was at the time slapped with an all new rating. A sensational Spanish NC-17 product of the 1990’s, let’s get the review rope ready for Pedro Almodóvar’s…Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!

First off, I wanted to let everyone know that Warner Bros. did not supply this 4K UHD Blu-ray for me to review, but instead I purchased it myself out of my love and affinity for the Rocky franchise, and most recently Creed in this case (as I simply could not resist that gorgeous, awe-inspiring black slip cover). I’ll admit though that I’m a few months late to this 4K Blu-ray party, but what matters most is that I’m here now, and I’m staying. Thus far the 4K UHD Blu-ray format has been a rewarding experience, but I’ll admit to having a few system hiccups (don’t make the mistake of buying Lionsgate’s Sicario 4K Blu-ray) since my review of the new equipment I possess here. You have to expect that from early adoption of technology, right? Nevertheless, you can’t dispute how eye-popping spectacular things are on the Sony XBR-65X930D 4K display, but I digress. We’re gathered here today to not only talk about my love for Creed and what the Rocky franchise may or may not mean to me, but more importantly how incredibly beautiful Creed is in 4K UHD Blu-ray. Let’s begin!

The press notes for the bizarre buddy comedy that is Swiss Army Man state the film comes from the minds behind the visionary “Turn Down For What” music video. That is an apt way of presenting a film that allows a man and a living corpse to become friends and explore the facets of life to varying emotional degrees. You also have to take into account how much this film almost feels like a dare for audiences to look past the fact that it largely plays like the artsiest fart joke to ever get acquired during Sundance.
