Something weird happened in 2014. My girlfriend made me take her to see The Purge: Anarchy in the theater. Why is this newsworthy? Hold on! I’m getting to it. I like a slow burn. Haha. It’s remarkable because of my disdain of the first entry in this Purge franchise. I initially absolutely hated the concept and just wasn’t a fan of the film overall. However, my qualms have slowly faded away over the past years given my love I have for Frank Grillo and his involvement in The Purge: Anarchy. The one scene where he was screaming at the man who took his son’s life, “you killed my boy,” nearly brought me to tears (and that’s hard to do). It was one of the best performances of the year in my playbook. I apologize about the previous spoiler, but I had to emphasize my point to hit it home to accurately describe my change of heart when it comes to the Purge franchise. There is something to admire in The Purge franchise that has stemmed from a singular voice, writer/director James DeMonaco. This twisted franchise has not been my favorite, but it has been influenced by topical subject matter that now pushes this latest entry, The Purge: Election Year, to a point that almost feels plausible. Some audiences can still be entertained by the over-the-top antics of this film universe’s annual event, but for a horror series to further embrace its social science fiction ideas and turn its subtext into text, I can extend a level of admiration.

This July, Scream Factory presents a long-lost cult favorite on Blu-ray for the first time. The Boy Who Cried Werewolf debuts on Blu-ray. This was the third and final pairing of actor Kerwin Mathews and cult filmmaker Nathan Juran (Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, The Brain From Planet Arous). The two had also worked together on the classic The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad and Jack The Giant Killer. The film makes its home video debut with a beautiful new High-Definition Transfer! In this thriller, a boy visits his father in a secluded cabin; the father is attacked by a werewolf and then becomes one himself. The boy constantly tries to tell others, but nobody will believe him. The film was originally released theatrical as half of a double bill with another film Scream Factory put out this year on Blu-ray, “Sssssss”. I’m spending the time before the upcoming holiday weekend to write about the aptly titled Independence Day, now some 20 years old and counting. Fox provided us with a regular Blu-ray version of this 20th Anniversary releases, which Aaron Neuwirth reviewed enthusiastically over here, but today I’m coming at you with the best presentation this film has ever seen on the 4K UHD Blu-ray format. However, I digress for the moment as I want to spend the next few paragraphs talking about what the 1996 science-fiction action flick meant to me. It is my belief that Independence Day accomplished three major things things, if not more. First, it ushered in the era of what all now know of as the obligatory, annual large-scale disaster films that plague the summer box office. Second, it became a star vehicle for Will Smith and opened doors to him in Hollywood I’m sure he never imagined despite the bright, rising star he already was. And finally, Independence Day set the bar for all sci-fi action movies to follow with its then groundbreaking effects. Sometimes you have to try and channel Roald Dahl to describe his films. Steven Spielberg certainly seems to be a fan, as he has done all he can to replicate the 1982 novel of the same name. Given both the Beard’s directorial sensibilities and being his first Disney movie there is perhaps almost too light of a touch, but The BFG makes up for this by way of delivering on spectacle without overdoing it. Really, what better way to see a movie about a little girl and her new giant best friend come to life than through the lens of a British comedy with big Hollywood effects?

When the eventual vampire apocalypse comes, we had better hope that centuries of vampire lore from books, comics, and movies is accurate. It’s the only thing we cling to, with the proper use of garlic, stakes through the heart, and hoping they can’t cross running water. Of course, we’ve seen countless interpretations of vampires in comics over the years, so to bring something new and intriguing to the genre is a challenge to creators. Luckily with Blood Feud from Oni Press, the challenge was accepted and executed very well.

Just when you thought it was safe to get Blake in the water, along comes The Shallows. Here’s an efficient thriller that milks a solid premise for all it’s worth. A surfer is trapped on a rock near the shore, while a shark circles her. Other details keep it interesting, even while the film goes over-the-top in its final act, but it does all it can to satisfy its b-movie machinations. Not hurting is star Blake Lively, who is more than capable of providing an action-movie lead to keep us involved with the thrills.

The inspirational feature film Endgame, starring Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), Ivonne Coll (Jane The Virgin), Efren Ramirez (Napoleon Dynamite) and Justina Machado (The Purge: Anarchy), will debut on DVD and Blu-ray on July 5 via Shout! Factory, and will have bonus features including Spanish-language subtitles. Endgame is a fictional story based on true events – how an impoverished high school in the border town of Brownsville, Texas, started a chess team and went on to become state champions. The touching family-friendly film also touches on the subjects of immigration, teen drinking, being true to one’s self, and bullying. Endgame was directed by Carmen Marrón (Go For It!), a former guidance counselor with a dream of making films with positive role models for Latino kids.
