Paranautical Activity, a Love/Hate Relationship (PS4 Game Review)

Paranautical ActivityI have to say, this game (Paranautical Activity) looked like it wouldn’t be anything more than a sloppy attempt at mashing up Minecraft and Doom, but it proved to be a fun, frustratingly addictive shooter. While it does have a Doom feel to it, the only thing linking it to Minecraft is the square environment, and mobs (video game slang for enemies; multiple definitions online). The controls in the game are easy to use, even with the lack of any formal instructions, and after only a few tours through the first and second levels I was getting into the swing of things. There are three different difficulty levels; each difficulty unlocking after the previous difficulty is beaten. All throughout the game there are ways to unlock special items and characters that can change the playfield either for the better or to make things more challenging. It’s almost like the unlockables mechanic in Crossy Road. Continue reading ‘Paranautical Activity, a Love/Hate Relationship (PS4 Game Review)’

As I Am: The Life and Time$ of DJ AM (Movie Review)

As I Am: The Life and Time$ of DJ AM (Movie Review)I was a little skeptical going into this film.  I got the distinct impression that this was just gonna be a documentary about some young white dude who got caught up in drugs and became famous by playing black music.  But what kept me glued to the screen was that I grew to understand that DJ AM actually had a profound respect not just for Rap and hip-hop music, but for the surrounding culture as well.  He spent a lot of time scouring through old record stores to find the origins of the beats we’re all familiar with today.  You combine all that with the fact that he might’ve been one of the most kind, generous and giving people in the music industry, and you realize just how much of a loss his passing truly was. Triple 9 (Blu-ray Review)

Can Triple 9 bare the load of such a star-studded cast? (Blu-ray Review)Get your Ski-Masks ready, cuz we’re goin’ on a heist! Triple 9 has a massive cast of stars and talent that are perfectly picked for these roles.  A group of ex-military dirty cops set out on one big final bank robbery before they go their separate ways off into the sunset.  But things take a turn when Russian Mob boss Irena (Kate Winslet) decides that they need to take on one more score before their “debt” is settled.  Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the job in question requires them to break into a Homeland Security building.  Their plan to allow them enough time to escape before the Cops arrive is to use Chris Allen (Casey Afleck), who recently transferred to their precinct as a pawn to distract the authorities while they make their get away.

Scarlet is Back! (Comic Review)

ScarletSix long years ago a little comic by the name of Scarlet first hit the shelves. I picked it up without ever having heard about it for two simple reasons. First, it was written by the tried and true Brian Michael Bendis, arguably one of the best, and hardest working writers in the business today. Second, it was illustrated by Alex Maleev, whose simultaneously raw yet refined style is undeniably top notch. As an added bonus, Bendis & Maleev have a history of working together, and their synergistic capabilities had proven to be stellar. So I picked up the book, and it instantly became one of my favorites…and then, five issues in…it ended. Fans were understandably disappointed, until 2013 when the duo served up two more issues, no worse for the time off, and that seemed to be well and truly it for Scarlet. So when I recently walked into the comic shop and saw the cover declaring itself on the shelf: “Scarlet is Back!” my jaw dropped and my eyes bugged out. After having read it, I’m here to tell you, this book is better than ever. Continue reading ‘Scarlet is Back! (Comic Review)’

FENDER BENDER Is At Fault For Being A Fun Time! (Movie Review)

Fender-BenderIt was bound to happen sooner or later.  The immensely popular Scream Factory Blu-ray line from independent distributor Shout! Factory has made a big name and impact on the horror fandom and community right from its inception in 2012.  After a few years, fans began to ask if they ever thought of putting out their own films ever.  With trust from them having built clouts as huge fans themselves of the genre, they were definitely interested in it.  Then, last year, the exciting news dropped about Fender Bender with much excitement.  Fittingly, their first foray into filmmaking and producing would be a slasher film as their first Blu-ray release was the 1981 slasher sequel Halloween II (Also the first of the coveted “Collector’s Edition” line).  Horror lovers will be able to take in this film when it premieres on ChillerTV next Friday (A week from today, June 3) at 9PM. Alice: Through the Looking Glass, Almost (Movie Review)

Alice Through The Looking GlassHey guys, Ken here, and today’s Underdog is Alice: Through the Looking Glass. If you’ve seen the first movie, Alice in Wonderland, which released in 2010, you’ll understand why Brian didn’t feel like going to this one (hence why I used the word “underdog”).  The first movie wasn’t bad, but it certainly wasn’t worth paying $20.00 to sit in a crowded room.  The first movie rated 3 out of 5, but I have to say, this sequel was a touch better (but certainly not without it’s flaws).  Some of the flaws from the last movie crossed over, but it also made some improvements. Let me start with the cons. Continue reading ‘Alice: Through the Looking Glass, Almost (Movie Review)’
