I used to be normal…happy…well-adjusted…but that was before… On December 15, 2015, Scream Factory proudly presents Zombie High in a Blu-ray + DVD combo pack, for the first time on either format. A brand new high-definition transfer highlights the incredible story of a hard-working student and the warped way of life that made her go wacky! Virginia Madsen (Candyman, Sideways) and Richard Cox (Cruising) star in this humorous thriller about the bizarre happenings that occur in a prestigious boarding school. The film features a great supporting cast including Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks, Ray Donovan), Scott Coffey (Mullholland Drive, Lost Highway) and Paul Feig, who would go on to create the TV series Freaks And Geeks and direct such films as Spy, Bridsmaids and the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters.

Scream Factory presents a double dose of science-fiction fun with The Dungeonmaster & Eliminators in their Blu-ray debuts on December 15, 2015. This release comes complete with a new interview with director Peter Manoogian. Call me crazy, but I’m actually very excited for this release. Both are pretty culty schlock classics that deliver in the best ways. I have been hoping and anticipating Scream Factory to upgrade The Dungeonmaster, and the double feature releases back this summer that promoted a handful of the titles that shared a previous 4-movie marathon release to Blu-ray. And now, here it is. Looks like The Vagrant and Contamination .7 (Also known as one of the fake Troll 3 film) are just sitting waiting for a double feature now. I’m pretty sure nobody really cares if What’s the Matter With Helen? ever makes the jump. Continue reading ‘The Dungeonmaster / Eliminators – Double Feature (Blu-ray Review)’

Original and audacious. Contemporary and classic. Director John Turturro’s (The Big Lebowski) Romance & Cigarettes is a romantic comedy, a musical drama and, above all, a showcase for an amazing cast of talented actors lead by James Gandolfini (TV’s The Sopranos), Susan Sarandon (Bull Durham), Kate Winslet (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). Paying homage to classic Hollywood musicals, borrowing from The Singing Detective and Pennies From Heaven, a jukebox musical where heartfelt feelings are verbalized not through spoken word but through song and dance. From Dusty Springfield (“Piece of My Heart”) and Elvis Presley (“Trouble”) to Cyndi Lauper (“Prisoner of Love”), the musical numbers are as eclectic as the characters mouthing them. Romance & Cigarettes, directed by John Turturro from his original screenplay features performances by Steve Buscemi (Fargo), Bobby Cannavale (TV’s Boardwalk Empire), Mandy Moore (A Walk To Remember), Mary-Louise Parker (Bullets Over Broadway), Aida Turturro (TV’s The Sopranos), Christopher Walken (True Romance), Barbara Sukowa and Elaine Stritch (TV’s 30 Rock). Thev scandal that gave the nation’s favorite pastime a black eye is dramatically rendered in the John Sayles (Lone Star) scripted and directed Eight Men Out. The film features an impressive cast including John Cusack (Say Anything), Charlie Sheen (Wall Street), D.B. Sweeney (Taken 2), David Strathairn (Lincoln), Michael Lerner (Barton Fink), Clifton James (WUSA), Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead) and Christopher Lloyd (Back To The Future). Its a passionate film for the baseball hardcore that opened to pretty strong reviews, however some (Like, 80s Roger Ebert) were not too enthused that the movie takes a hardcore “inside baseball” approach to its storytelling. The film is making its glorious debut on Blu-ray from the people over at Olive Films. Of note, this one was filmed where I reside.

There was a brief period of time in my life back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s where I just wasn’t a fan of Tom Cruise. Maybe it was his relationship with Katie Holmes, or maybe it was all his scientology crap, I don’t know, but I just couldn’t watch his films for awhile (with the exception of Minority Report). I remember catching Mission: Impossible III one late night on a Dell Latitude laptop (yuck!) while working third shift in a data center, but other than that I had no idea what I was missing out on. Then came news of Tom scaling one of the tallest buildings in the world in Dubai in the fourth entry of this series, and that was all it took. My butt was definitely in a theater chair to see that. Ever since that Tom Cruise can do no wrong in my books churning out incredible flicks left and right like Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow, just to name a few. Below is the trailer, but here’s the synopsis too if you’re into words (but you know you really want to see that trailer). Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War finds Steve Rogers leading the newly formed team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. But after another incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability, headed by a governing body to oversee and direct the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers, resulting in two camps—one led by Steve Rogers and his desire for the Avengers to remain free to defend humanity without government interference, and the other following Tony Stark’s surprising decision to support government oversight and accountability. Get ready to pick a side and join the nonstop action playing out on two fronts when Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War opens in U.S. theaters on May 6, 2016. Take a chance on love when the “laugh out loud funny” (Los Angeles Times) romantic comedy Man Up arrives on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD), DVD (plus Digital) and Digital HD February 2 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Featuring the “hilarious and heartwarming” (The Spinoff) Simon Pegg (The World’s End) and Lake Bell (Netflix’s “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp”), Man Up is “a smart and winning rom-com” (US Weekly.) The film follows Nancy (Bell), a charming, albeit awkward single woman determined to add spontaneity to her drab love life. When she accepts a blind date from a misinformed stranger, Jack (Pegg), she finds that giving love a chance can lead to the most unexpected of romances.

I strolled into Monday night’s press screening of the British crime thriller Legend armed with only two bits of information, Tom Hardy was the leading man and there was two of him. I honestly knew nothing more than that having never even checked out the film’s trailer nor researched it beforehand like I usually do. One of my reviewer friends in the Austin area saw it prior and said it would fit my movie consumption tastes perfectly. After all, Tom Hardy is in my number one film of the year thus far so who am I to call his bluff? It’s almost as if I was meant to see Legend by some kind of divine intervention. So here I am. Here you are. Let’s get started! Continue reading ‘Tom Hardy Makes A ‘Legend’ For Himself (Movie Review)’
