An incredible true story 66 million years in the making, Dinosaur 13 “is a tale of plucky, underdog success, ‘the stuff that dreams are made of,’” (McClatchy-Tribune News Service) and arrives on Blu-ray this week from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The documentary is also available on Digital HD and On Demand. The Dinosaur 13 Blu-ray features a new director’s cut of the film along with bonus material that includes deleted scenes plus numerous featurettes that provide more insight into the restoration and research completed on SUE along with a prior Larson excavation. The “awe-inspiring” (Variety) documentary will leave you feeling pretty bad or this group of paleontologists and pretty peeved at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Whether you were watching the premiere of Marvel’s Agent Carter or simply waiting for YouTube/Twitter/Facebook to explode with all this ANT-MAN stuff, it is now safe to think small and get a load of what Marvel has in store this July. Ant-Man is coming and troubled behind-the-scenes business aside, many surely have enough faith in the studio that brought us talking trees and raccoons to go along with the effortlessly likable Paul Rudd, as he and Michael Douglas battle the preferably bald Corey Stoll in the next Marvel Studios adventure. Sure, this is not the most iconic teaser I have ever scene for a Marvel film, but I am pleased enough with the emphasis on character and am curious what a movie like this about this kind of character can really do. Check out the trailer for yourself and tell us what you think!

I recall being a very young lad and watching MTV trying to figure out what ‘good’ music was, by chance I stayed up late enough to watch a group of young up and coming sketch comedy actors on the show, The State. I had no real idea of what I was watching but I was riveted. It was odd and I didn’t get all of the jokes, but I still laughed because I was that guy all the way back then. Eventually the show was cancelled, this was back before the internet and I had no idea why or where these young actors went. I was upset but eventually time went on and I saw Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney, and Michael Ian Black pop up on their own new show Viva Variety on Comedy Central a number of years later. I was stoked! I was older so I understood more of the jokes and I was just happy to see some talented and deserving comedians on TV again. And like the The State, Viva Variety was cancelled. A chubby, nerdy, and Latino Jr High school child cried out, “IS THERE NOTHING JUST IN THIS WORLD?!?!?!” Luckily, there would be another chance for Lennon and company to bring me more comedic joy. In 2003, Comedy Central premiered Reno 911! and it was a critically and commercially successful show, and most importantly, I got more than just a season or two of it. It was created by three The State alums, Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Robert Ben Garant. While the show had 6 seasons, not all episodes were on the same level of hilarity, but they were all consistently funny. Follow me and we go through each season together… Ladies and gentlemen, let’s visit Reno!

When Scream Factory announced they were releasing Supernova many moons ago, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the distributor’s most celebrated announcement of all time. The film came out back in 2000, wasn’t liked at all and bombed at the box office pretty hard. Director Walter Hill allowed it to have some sort of historical significance by removing his name for the picture and making it the first film to use the Thomas Lee moniker as Alan Smithee had been laid to rest. Taking a quick look at Rotten Tomatoes, its one where the audiences and critics both healthily agree actually, sporting 10% critic and 16% audience appraisal. The one thing that I think made sense for Scream Factory on this release wasn’t the film itself, was likely bringing back some of its players to tell the story of what exactly happened with this release. Now, that is something that did peak my interest when they announced their extras. No Walter Hill, no Angela Bassett, nor Francis Ford Coppola – but Lou Diamond Phillips, Robert Forster, Jack Sholder and Daniel Chuba are enough to suffice. Scream Factory mentioned that 2015 was going to dabble a bit more in the Double Features type releases and February seems to show they are going to make good on that. They are also release movie with Nicolas Cage and Jim Carrey in them too. You’ll remember those old “rediscovered” movies from back in the day after they climbed to fame that started popping up with them no prominently on the box art. Vampire comedies Once Bitten and Vampire’s Kiss are coming to Blu-ray! Also making its debut is the goofy slasher film New Year’s Evil, which you really gotta see. They weren’t able to bring it out the week of New Year’s Eve, but who cares, the fact that its coming to Blu-ray and getting special treatment is really awesome enough! Today, they’ve unveiled a nice announcement of these releases (Which also include Love At First Bite and High Spirits), so scroll below and check em out! Writer Leigh Janiak makes her directorial debut with Honeymoon. Per the film’s interviews, she found herself inspired and felt she could be able to do big moments on even the lowest of budgets having just viewed the film Monsters. She even got to hand pick one of her cast members, Rose Leslie, because she was such a big fan of hers on Game Of Thrones. The film shot in 2013 and debuted last year at the South By Southwest film festival. The film received plenty of positive acclaim and got a small release in theaters last September. It was a film I marked that I wanted to see once I heard about it, but honestly it escaped my mind until this Blu-ray was announced. Sometimes it just sort of works that way, I suppose, but I got to see it and here’s my review. Continue reading ‘Honeymoon (Blu-ray Review)’
I had one final film to see before I felt I could compile an accurate list for the recently departed 2014. Boyhood was a popular title amongst my fellow writers here, though that wasn’t showing in my area, thus escaping my viewing grasp. Gone Girl came highly recommended though the trailer never attracted my interest enough to shell out money for the movie. The film in question, however, was The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. After thoroughly enjoying last year’s Desolation of Smaug, I must admit that Five Armies ended up being a bit of a disappointment. It was not a bad film, but it certainly did not soar either. So, to my list it did not make. With Tolkien’s tales at a cinematic close and Gone Girl gone from the cinema, I present you with my top ten films of the year as well as a couple notables.
The poster for this dull home invasion thriller states, “From the Producers of Obsessed,” which gives a pretty good idea of what anyone is getting into with No Good Deed. I say that meaning the viewer is either aware Obsessed was a really bad, trashy-type thriller or that they don’t even know the movie being referred to, because of how generic the title is. I certainly see why some can like silly movies like these, ideally recognizing how they are flawed, even while finding them entertaining, but I am not there. A premise like this is only made worse by the poor effort that went into the making of it, regardless of how committed some of the performances may seem, among few other aspects. Anyway, now the film has arrived on a Blu-ray disc mastered in 4K.
Girls, Girls Girls. You hear a lot about this show, whether it be good, bad or “controversial”. Having watched the show…I really don’t understand how this show is controversial at all. Just because Lena Dunham doesn’t have a supermodel figure and gets naked? Lame. There are some moments push limits, but its HBO. I think Game Of Thrones is more edgy with its sex and stuff, personally. I haven’t been with the show from the beginning. I watched an episode during its first season and was completely turned off. But then last January I sucked it up and got completely caught up. Once you get on the show’s wavelength and totally understand what it is and how to watch it (Its not for everyone I get that), its quite an enjoyable time. Part of the fun is facepalming yourself at these 20 something girls and guys making dumb decisions and choices like people during that time in their lives do. Hannah Horvath may be one of the most toxic and frustrating characters on TV, but getting pissed at her is part of the fun of watching this little dramedy show. I make it no surprise. When it comes to televisions and home media players, there’s no other brand I’ll recommend or even own in my home other than Sony. They build the best gear in my opinion (I’m not being paid to say this) and are worth the extra bucks over the competition as far as I’m concerned. Also, when it comes to Blu-ray players, again in my opinion, you’ll never hear me speak of any other player besides the Playstation 3, the king of them all. However, a funny thing happened this past January. I became a gamer when I got my grubby paws on a Playstation 4 and did the unthinkable, I paid to become a Sony PSN Plus member so I could kick some arse online in the Call of Duty franchise, and also bask in all the other benefits the membership has to offer like free games, discounts, multiplayer matches and more. We, the fans and players on the Playstation 4, come to rely on our PSN Plus memberships like crack to a junkie. Continue reading ‘Is Sony’s PSN Christmas Outage Makeup To Us Really Enough?’
I first met Tim Sullivan years ago at the mighty Comic-Con. That interview can be found here. Over the years the horror legend and I have kept in touch and I’m even involved in an upcoming project of his, but we’re not here to talk about that today…just yet. We’re here about something both old and new Tim Sullivan has been cooking as of late. So here it is. Director Tim Sullivan has been joined by horror icon Tom Holland in a great new venture called…drum roll please…TnT Presents. Offering enhanced editions of their memorable films, Holland and Sullivan will continue to celebrate the launch of TnT Presents with a signing party at a place I love very much, Dark Delicacies, this month, January 10th from 2pm to 4pm (that’s Pacific time). Check out the official press release below and learn how you can also score an autographed Chucky doll! The year of 2014 is literally coming to an end, but I am not letting it end without putting up a list of my favorite films of the year. This is never an easy list to put together, but somehow I have not only listed my Top Ten favorites, I have actually managed to rank my top 30 films of the year. Having seen 150+ films theatrically, there are certainly a lot of films to consider, but developing a master list of year-end material and then narrowing it down from there, basically led to me having a ranked list of 30 films. Ultimately I went through a process of figuring out which films got the greatest response out of me and stuck with me throughout the year, in an effort to get the final ten films in order. With that in mind, I am very satisfied with this final list that I have put together, mainly because it is a reflection of my own opinions that I am happy to share. So here we go with my picks for the Top Ten films of 2014. (As per usual, I placed lots of Easter Eggs hidden in all the pictures).
