Looking at this film and all the actors and producers involved, it seems quite clear that The Lookalike was a script that a lot of people had faith in. There is, indeed, a fun, pulpy story being told here, with enough characters, dark humor, twists, and turns to make for what could have been a fun crime comedy-drama. Unfortunately, director Richard Gray (the writer’s husband) does not seem to possess enough skill in the way of flashiness to really bring out the entertainment that should be had in an over-the-top story like this. Still, the effort was made, so now a Blu-ray exists for people to check it out for themselves.

Rosewater is the film based on “Then They Came for Me” by Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was imprisoned for a lengthy period, following, among other things, an interview with a correspondent from The Daily Show. This film was the screenwriting and directorial debut of Jon Stewart, which arrived in theaters last year. It did not do a ton of business, but it was given a good amount of respect for what it set out to do and certainly shows promise for the future of Stewart as a filmmaker. I would say he found a way to be very respectful to his subject, in an effort to make a compelling drama that may not be what one would expect, when it comes to watching a film put together by the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Now the film is on Blu-ray, where hopefully more people can catch up with it.

26 horror shorts all in one package? Sounds neat! That said, horror anthology films tend to be a mixed bag for me. Sometimes I find them very enjoyable. Other times they tend to go on for too long, exhausting me in the process, and leaving me with only so much to praise, despite the strong effort coming from the filmmaker(s) involved. Truth be told, I never got around to seeing ABC’s of Death, as I had heard things that led me to believe I would not really appreciate it. For ABC’s of Death 2, however, I had heard the short films presented were mostly much more effective this time around. Given that there is no continuity in a film like this, I went for it and got what I expected in terms of overall reaction. Now the film is on Blu-ray, with 26 different shorts for viewers to wrap their minds around.

I see a lot of promise here. Straight Outta Compton reunites Ice Cube and director F. Gary Gray (Friday!) for a film that chronicles the early lives of Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, once known together as N.W.A. I am not usually one to check out red-band trailers (they tend to give away the goods, especially with comedies), but it seems harder not to sell a film like this without one. That in mind, again, I see a lot of promise and I tend to like what F. Gary Gray puts out (The Negotiator!). We will see come this August, but for now, check out the trailer and pics from the film in this post.

After months of speculation and curiosity, countered by delays and implied bad buzz, things have unfortunately not tipped in favor of Jupiter Ascending, the new, original sci-fi/fantasy film from the Wachowskis. I really wanted to like this movie and all of the right elements are certainly there, given the fairly game cast, the production design, the visual effects, the score, and more. Ultimately though, the general wonder and wackiness that comes with the ambitious world-building effort is not enough to help the chaotic story being told, which is both too repetitive and too impersonal to have garnered more connection to a film that tries really hard. Even worse: I can no longer say I have loved everything the Wachowskis have done.

Over half a decade ago, Irish singer Liz Madden made her Why So Blu debut, discussing her then new album Going Home. Liz has since built on her successful resume’ of releases, with 2015 being the launch pad for her latest album, Legacy. With each new release, Madden always finds ways to subtly separate the feel of each work from the last. Legacy proves no different.

Seventh Son is a mess of familiar ideas, talented actors, and competent (but mostly ugly) visual effects; all brought together into one horrible movie. There are various ways to approach a review for a movie like this, most of which involve making fun of it, and honestly, this is the kind of movie that has been lined up to be made fun of. Having never looked all that engaging and finally being released after a two-year delay, it is not as if I expected something truly memorable. At the same time though, Seventh Son is a film so blinded by the thought that looking expensive equals awesome movie that it makes any admittedly cool sight, such as a warrior with four arms, completely devoid of the charm one could find in similar hack-and-slash medieval adventures of yesteryear. Simply put: this film is awful.

If I was completely ignorant and judged Jupiter Ascending by its cover, I’d be staying the hell away from it even though I love science fiction. The trailers for the movie looked absolutely horrible. When they pulled it from its former release schedule last year I have to be honest with y’all, I was hoping this would’ve been shelved for a long time, preferably long after I passed from this Earth. However, that wasn’t the case. What we had last year was just a minor speed bump and presumably to allow additional time needed to complete over 2,000 special effects shots of the film and prepare an effective marketing campaign. I’m sorry, but I just had to laugh out loud at the effective marketing reason. You can’t polish something that looks like a turd. You have to completely paint over it, but I digress. The past three years, consistently in the horror world, we’ve been anticipating a film in the V/H/S series. Done in the classic horror anthology mode, but using the modern “found footage” aesthetic, the first film was a neat experiment that went pretty hit or miss. Last years’ followup was seen as a consensus improvement. It also contained a segment that had one of the most horrifying and disturbing horror stories I had seen in a long time. I was eager to see what they are considering the finale. Which, it surprises me that they are showing restraint and cutting the series off at this point, as I could see it going on much longer with more original stories or similar ones from different perspectives. Plus, these don’t cost much and also don’t seem to have lengthy productions by their nature. Continue reading ‘VHS: Viral (Blu-ray Review)’

Get ready to bring home (Little Orphan) ANNIE, the beloved classic that has delighted audiences for generations, when Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases the modern day telling of the rags-to-riches story on Digital HD March 10, and on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD March 17. Featuring a mix of new and timeless songs infused with contemporary sensibilities, this updated version brings a hip new vibe to the heartwarming tale. ANNIE stars Academy Award® winner Jamie Foxx (Best Actor, Ray, 2004) as New York City billionaire Will Stacks, who takes in a foster youngster to boost his image while campaigning for mayor. Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Best Actress, Beasts of the Southern Wild, 2012) stars in the title role as a spunky, upbeat foster kid originally left by her parents with the promise they’d be back for her some day. The “hard knock life” she’s experienced, living with mean foster mom Miss Hannigan, played by Cameron Diaz (Shrek), has also made her into a savvy, street-smart New York City kid, whose life changes dramatically after meeting Will Stacks. A family film that both old and new fans can enjoy, ANNIE also stars Rose Byrne (This Is Where I Leave You) as Stack’s assistant Grace, and Bobby Cannavale (Chef) as Stack’s campaign manager, Guy.

Officer Lou Garou isn’t the best cop in small-town Woodhaven – in fact, he’s probably the worst. He mostly just looks to avoid anything that could possibly interfere with his goal of getting wasted. What if the ghastly images and abominations haunting our collective nightmares actually exist? Writer/director Adam Green (Hatchet) sets out to make a documentary exploring this tantalizing premise after being contacted by a mysterious man named William Dekker (Ray Wise). Dekker claims he can prove that “monsters are real” and insists these grotesque creatures are forgotten, hideously deformed humanoids inhabiting a vast, underground metropolis of the damned. It should be no surprise that Furious 7 is one of my most anticipated films of the year. All the main players return and the cast gets all the added value in the world in the way of Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Djimon Hounsou, and Tony Jaa, among others. Now under James Wan’s direction, the action looks pretty incredible as well. This is a film that seemingly has it all, as far as mainstream blockbusters go and I cannot wait to see it at least a couple times on the big screen. With all that in mind, this latest entry in the enduring franchise has an all new trailer out, which is packed with action, along with a little more context for what is going on. There are also a slew of new photos as well, so continue on to see it all!
