There was never a question as to whether or not I was going to see Interstellar theatrically. On that same topic, there was also never even a question as to whether my first time checking it out would be in IMAX either. The only question I had unanswered throughout this whole year up until a few weeks ago was how early I would be able to screen it. You see, when it comes to the 44-year old director Christopher Nolan, in my opinion he’s earned the right to make a stinker or two and I’ll stand by the man, support him and walk in blindly to whatever his name is attached to no matter what, just like I did for Man of Steel last year. Ever since 2000’s Memento the guy has been on a non-stop roll in the “success” category. Simply put, he makes the movies this reviewer wants to see. I also love the fact that he’s anti-technology when it comes to email and smart phones and is just all business. I applaud that. I wish I could adopt his philosophies and stances in my life, but I digress. So I guess you can say Interstellar really had me at hello all this time before I even stepped one foot into the theater this past Monday evening. It had Christopher Nolan’s name on the bill and in any universe that’s good enough for me. Continue reading ‘Interstellar Never Defies Gravity Because Of Too Much Dead Weight (Movie Review)’
This past season of the hit animated FX comedy Archer took bold steps, as it ditched a lot of the regular elements of the show in favor of a very long journey in the form of Archer Vice. While the next season seems to be putting things back in order, feel free to re-live Season 5’s wild adventures on Blu-ray/DVD on January 6th. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming release.

We now have a title! Let’s face it, there is only speculation to be garnered from this, rather than actual news, but with the filming of Star Wars Episode VII now having been completed, there is certainly going to be more movement in spreading awareness of the next installment in what is one of the biggest franchises of all time. We may have no real details regarding the story or which actor plays who (I think Mark Hamil is Watto’s nephew or something…), but we do at least now have the title for this highly anticipated film. Is that going to lead into a brief teaser trailer in the near future? One could hope, but for now, continue on to see the official title announcement for Episode VII.

A lot of times there is an urge to compare films to other films. It may not be the best way to go about things, but it happens, regardless if one really wants to or not. I remember seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was very young and being transfixed by it (regardless of if I ‘got it’). Apollo 13 was a film I saw in theaters a few times, as I was at an age where space and astronauts were the coolest things ever. The Right Stuff I caught later, though it has become a favorite film of mine (along with 2001). Having now seen Interstellar, a science fiction film from co-writer/director Christopher Nolan, I cannot help but think of these films that have contributed to my thoughts on the genre and how they served to influence Interstellar in various ways. Still, regardless of how I think Interstellar matches up to those other films, what is important for this review is to communicate why I found it so worthwhile to go on this journey and would hope many others do so as well by way of watching the film on the biggest screen available to them.

You know that expression that says “you had me at hello”? Well the same train of thought can be applied here when this title, The Guest, because it is billed as “from the creators of You’re Next.” They really did have me at hello there. Even though I have not seen The Guest yet, that one line “from the creators of You’re Next” has me wanting to see it. Call it brilliant marketing, call it what you want. It worked on me! The Guest Blu-ray Combo Pack will be released on January 6th. So in the meantime please check out the full press release down below from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. One year ago today, I wrote an article focusing on 14 movies I’d like to see on Blu-ray for the year 2014. That article wound up becoming the pilot for what would sort of be a regular week-to-week series from me, whining about a movie that’s only on DVD or VHS and not here to Blu-ray yet. It also made new release announcements an extra bit of fun for me if one of my random requests wound up coming to fruition. From the original list, 6 titles (around 43%) wound up finding a Blu-ray release this year. In addition, from my weekly articles, 3 of those wound up coming to fruition to make the Wishlist have about a 20% success rate. While I’ve had a lot of fun with these pieces, due to life, work, busy-ness and whatnot, the Wishlist is going to be moving from the weekly format to a monthly one. Its not that I’m out of ideas, its just that I am not having the sort of time I used to in writing these pieces. But hey, today is a celebration of these pieces, so, let’s take a look at some of our success stories from the past year and then let’s do 15 more for 2015! I posted about this back in September and now we have a result! The latest season of Arrested Development is coming to DVD and it now has box art designed by a fan. Feelings on this season may have been met with mixed criticism, but it does seem clear that a lot of effort went into creating something quite ambitious, rather than just being a ton of fan favorite jokes lumped into a lazy season of television. Ideally one can revisit this season and maybe admire more about this season, but regardless, continue on to see the official box art and learn more about this upcoming release.

Does everyone remember the Ed Harris-Eva Longoria-Michael Pena border crossing uber drama that took the box office by storm this past summer? No? Oh yeah, cuz it only opened in three theaters and expanded to a total of fourteen by the end of its run. As a matter of fact, its theatrical run ended just a few weeks ago to be precise. It only took just under $60,000 in its domestic run, but according to Wikipedia the film has wound up doing over $25 million globally. That’s not too shabby for a little film like this boasting more character acts and no real star power. The movie about border crossing, the controversies and the dangers of also marks the feature film debut of writer and director Michael Berry. Continue reading ‘Frontera (Blu-ray Review)’
Tusk is a film that got away from me when it was out theatrically so despite some of the negative reviews out there I really want to see it because admittedly so I liked what I saw in the trailer, but I have fallen for that trick before. LOL. So hear goes my sales pitch to y’all. Justin Long stars in the supposedly hilarious and bizarre monster movie, Tusk, arriving on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD) and DVD (plus Digital) December 30th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. Check out the full press release down below from Lionsgate Home Entertainment and pre-order your copy now! Continue reading ‘Tusk Sinks Its Teeth Into Blu-ray This December’
“The author behind Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and the director of The American have joined forces to seemingly put together the most deliberately paced, convoluted spy thriller since those two films I just mentioned for A Most Wanted Man.” That is one way to sum up this espionage-drama based on John le Carre’s novel, but it will of course get far more credit for being the last film featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman in a lead performance. A Most Wanted Man works because of this Hoffman performance (among other reasons), as the man is as stellar as ever. The film may only accomplish so much, but it is smart and crafty in its construction from both a filmmaking and script standpoint. The Blu-ray also manages to deliver a fine technical presentation.
Cartoon Network has put together some Holiday focused episodes of some of their in-house produced series and put them to use on a nice DVD. This DVD serves as a sort of sampler of sorts to their programming as well. The shows appearing with spirited episode son the disc are the super popular Adventure Time (Gets two episodes all to itself), the strange and funny Regular Show and the fun The Amazing World Of Gumball. Though, a closer look shows this might be more of a secretive promotional disc as you can see that they’ve also included two “Bonus Episodes” that don’t have anything to do with the holidays. Those two episodes come from the recently started show Clarence and the currently running (in the middle of season one), Steven Universe. Remember when this movie happened? Golden Globe® winner Idris Elba (Best Actor in a Mini-Series, TV’s “Luther”, 2012) and Academy Award® nominee Taraji P. Henson (Best Supporting Actress, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 2008) headline the hair-raising thriller NO GOOD DEED, coming to Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital HD on Jan. 6 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. Terri (Henson), a former lawyer and devoted wife and mother of two, offers to help charming stranger Colin (Elba) after he shows up at her door claiming car trouble. If there is one film that deservingly has the right and proudly should be able to give the middle finger write at box office pundits (that don’t write for Forbes), its Tammy. This $20 million budgeted “one for me” film opening with a good $21 million opening weekend over 4th of July and because it didn’t do Transformers Independence Day numbers was considered a massive bomb and failure. Also people were claiming it was the end of Melissa McCarthy’s fame. WHOOPS! The film then went on to score almost $90 million to finish its run, flirting with making 5x its budget back. That’s massive success. Not a failure folks. And it was also a very solid opening weekend for a low key film that basically only promoted that Melissa McCarthy was in it and she was being one of her normal comedic characters. Despite whatever my thoughts on the film, I take great pleasure in seeing that Ben Falcone and everyone involved with Tammy got the last laugh. Continue reading ‘Tammy (Blu-ray Review)’
Based on its theatrical performance, Step Up All In may be a franchise finale, at least as far as being a wide release in theaters goes, but without any irony, I would pronounce this film as one of the better ones of the summer. It is times like these where explaining the scoring feels necessary. Does ‘4 stars’ mean that Step Up is a great movie or better than other films I have given lower ratings to, not necessarily, but it does not really matter either. From what I saw, Step Up is a franchise that only has so many kinds of stories it can tell and only so much potential to capitalize on. Obviously those who have little care for seeing elaborate dance routines will not get much out of a film like this, but in terms of what All In is going for, it does it very well.
To save Hong Kong from an fiery disaster, a team of dedicated firefighters battle an out-of-control blaze that threatens to plunge the city into catastrophic darkness in AS THE LIGHT GOES OUT, blazing onto Blu-ray, DVD from Well Go USA Entertainment. Written and directed by Derek Kwok of Journey to the West, the action-packed suspense drama stars Nicholas Tse, Shawn Yue, Simon Yam (Ip Man, Election), Hu Jun, William Chan, Bai Bing, Andy On and a cameo by the legendary Jackie Chan. The film was one of the first films released this year in both Hong Kong and China as it came out the first week of January, just on the heels of New Years’ Day. To date the film has accumulated a box office tally totaling over fifteen million dollars worldwide. Continue reading ‘As The Light Goes Out (Blu-ray Review)’
