Pee-wee’s Playhouse was very much an integral part of my childhood viewing. I was the prime audience back in the day. Every Saturday morning I would get up, have my marshmallow-y cereal and watch my cartoons. Pee-wee’s Playhouse was always the very last show on in the morning. The networks usually transitioned by having some live action stuff on at the end of the morning, like say Saved By The Bell and California Dreams. Pee-wee’s Playhouse was all sorts of things to me. It was wild, hilarious, fun and even some of the things on the show made me uneasy and creeped me out. It was jam packed and loading me with all sorts of emotion. Watching the show was equivalent to a massive sugar rush. Everybody my age had themselves a Pee-Wee Herman doll with the pull string and we also constantly quoted him and had our own impressions of him finely tuned ready to dial up at the right moment. And now I get to relive all of that through this fantastic new Blu-ray release from the amazing folks over at Shout! Factory. Last October, Scream Factory ghoulishly delighted everyone for Halloween with the release of The Vincent Price Collection. Six of the iconic horror actor’s works in one set with some definite gems of bonus features. Of those, there were the introductions and parting words for many of the films from the Iowa PBS archives from the 80s that had price discussing each film before and after it in a haunting library like setting. This year, Scream Factory is back with another volume of Price, up’ing the ante to now seven titles. This box set also has more commercially appealing titles to it as well, as it contains classics like The Raven, The House On Haunted Hill, Return Of The Fly, The Comedy Of Terrors and The Last Man On Earth to name some. It is with great pleasure that I return to these and share my experience. Continue reading ‘The Vincent Price Collection II (Blu-ray Review)’

It’s Halloween season and that means I watch a bunch of horror movies. I mean, I watch horror movies a lot any time of year, but this month is especially big. It’s like Christmas for a scary movie fan! My favorite long running horror movie franchise is
A Nightmare on Elm Street. While
Black Christmas started off the slasher genre as we know it, and
Halloween and
Friday the 13th became bankable franchises before Freddy, there has always been something about this series that makes me put it above the others. Logistically speaking, the idea of someone stalking you relentlessly in your dreams is terrifying because – much like
Invasion of the Body Snatchers – everyone has to sleep, and everyone will eventually become prey. Freddy Krueger isn’t like a Jason Voorhees or a Michael Myers where you can try and hide from him or outsmart him to defeat him… the idea of Freddy is always waiting for you when you close your eyes.

Day 1 of New York Comic Con started with a bang, as Walt Disney Studios brought the biggest surprise of the day in the form of newly married George Clooney’s appearance at the Tomorrowland panel. Clooney’s appearance was a big buzz winner for the film, as the actor alone generated 11,496 mentions and no doubt helped to ensure Tomorrowland was the most buzzed about property of the day. Tomorrowland’s first teaser trailer also debuted at the panel and was soon available online for audiences outside of New York to enjoy. The film enjoyed the largest Intent-to-View conversation with 4,459 mentions. Disney’s other panel for Marvel animation Big Hero Six was also a big winner with 13,521 mentions and 4,155 ITV mentions. When I first saw the poster for Universal’s Dracula Untold I instantly was fooled into thinking this was some kind of fan made poster art for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, at least it looked like it belonged to that particular franchise. My opinion on the matter still holds true even today when I look at the movie’s poster art as shown at the bottom of this review. It has the making of a really good Batman concept poster, at least in my opinion it does. However, I digress. I won’t waste your time by selfishly going off on a tangent bickering as to why I hate the poster art so much for Dracula Untold, but instead I’m going to forget the fact that I even mentioned it (despite it being embedded in print now) and move along because we have much bigger fish or should I say bats to fry here in this movie review. So whether you believe that Universal intends this film to be a reboot of the Universal Monsters franchise or not is your prerogative. Mine is to report on everything that simply goes down in this “first entry.” Shall we get started?

Roger & Me is a highly original, personal and satire account of one of America’s greatest urban disasters told against the background of the tough times in Flint, Michigan, Moore’s hometown. The birthplace of General Motors, Flint had been economically decimated by, among other things, plant closings and the elimination of 30,000 GM jobs. In Roger & Me, Moore gives cinematic voice to his razor-sharp, compassionate and often wryly humorous perceptions of what went wrong in Flint, and chronicles his much-thwarted efforts to meet face-to-face with then-GM Chairman Roger Smith. Blending humor with scathing indictment, Roger & Me ignited a national discussion about the cruelties of corporate America and inspired other filmmakers to make films that would be seen by wider audiences.

Another week, another horror film on the wishlist and another sequel to boot. In the realm of horror, we’ve had countless sequels, and Blu-ray is the format that seemingly is hesitant or taking its time to crank a lot of them out into production. A lot of these movies have gone from big titles, hits at the theater or on home video and become somewhat of more obscure cult items with the passage of time. Its not just the horror genre either, even big time Schwarzenegger hits from the 80s seem to be more niche interest and those were huge A-list titles during their time.

Former hotshot racecar driver Peter Roberts (Thomas Jane) traded the winner’s circle for safety, stability, a pile of debts and a 9 to 5 job as a beginners’ driving instructor. The US official teaser trailer for TOMORROWLAND directed by Brad Bird and starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Raffey Cassidy and Hugh Laurie, which just debuted at New York Comic Con, is now available. That is a sentence that thrills me, as Disney may have been able to present a panel about this upcoming feature at NYCC, but I am very happy to at least see footage from the actual film. Appropriately cryptic, but filled with ideas and a way to pique the interests of many, this is one of the original films coming next summer that has me very excited. Continue on to check out the new teaser trailer and a poster.

At its best, St. Vincent is a solid comedy-drama that features Bill Murray working at the best of his abilities as an actor to convey the sadness behind the guise of a smartass who has had a rough decline in later life. When the film does not work as well, it is because writer/director Theodore Melfi relies on a proven formula to do the work for him, despite the tonal balance one must carefully work with in order to succeed. Even with the problems in mind though, St. Vincent succeeds overall thanks to the casting of Murray and the nice level of chemistry he has with the cast around him, even if they are all on the path of a paint-by-numbers plot.

Being a great drummer is clearly no easy feat. One would not think a young jazz musician wanting to play drum at a music school would be the source for a gripping thriller, but then again, writer/director Damien Chazelle was responsible for writing the film Grand Piano, which was a thriller about a man forced to play the piano (or else!). That in mind, Whiplash is not a guilty pleasure take on a Hitchcockian thriller; it is an intensely focused drama that matches its ace lead performances with striking cinematic visuals to deliver a pretty fantastic film. This is a film that pushes its characters to their limits, in an effort to show what it means to be talented, passionate, and transfixed by getting something exactly right.

There is a certain category that a film like Obvious Child could easily fit into, as it features a female comedian turning in a comedic/slightly dramatic performance in a small comedy about a struggling woman finding new love, while dealing with her current life situation. This does not mean the film is inherently bad. Just last year I had a lot of love for Greta Gerwig in Frances Ha, but the year before that I had a lot less love for Gerwig in Lola Versus. Basically, films like this are of a certain type, but Obvious Child fit in a good way. Now the critically acclaimed sleeper has hit Blu-ray, so I have even more to go into about it.
