Roger & Me is a highly original, personal and satire account of one of America’s greatest urban disasters told against the background of the tough times in Flint, Michigan, Moore’s hometown. The birthplace of General Motors, Flint had been economically decimated by, among other things, plant closings and the elimination of 30,000 GM jobs. In Roger & Me, Moore gives cinematic voice to his razor-sharp, compassionate and often wryly humorous perceptions of what went wrong in Flint, and chronicles his much-thwarted efforts to meet face-to-face with then-GM Chairman Roger Smith. Blending humor with scathing indictment, Roger & Me ignited a national discussion about the cruelties of corporate America and inspired other filmmakers to make films that would be seen by wider audiences.

Another week, another horror film on the wishlist and another sequel to boot. In the realm of horror, we’ve had countless sequels, and Blu-ray is the format that seemingly is hesitant or taking its time to crank a lot of them out into production. A lot of these movies have gone from big titles, hits at the theater or on home video and become somewhat of more obscure cult items with the passage of time. Its not just the horror genre either, even big time Schwarzenegger hits from the 80s seem to be more niche interest and those were huge A-list titles during their time.

Former hotshot racecar driver Peter Roberts (Thomas Jane) traded the winner’s circle for safety, stability, a pile of debts and a 9 to 5 job as a beginners’ driving instructor. But his life shifts into overdrive when mysterious out-of-towner Simon Keller (John Cusack) shows up for a driving lesson and hijacks Peter to be his getaway driver in a $9 million heist. Now these unlikely fugitives are on a white knuckle race to stay one step ahead of the mobsters who want their money back and the corrupt cops who will kill anyone who gets in their way. The US official teaser trailer for TOMORROWLAND directed by Brad Bird and starring George Clooney, Britt Robertson, Raffey Cassidy and Hugh Laurie, which just debuted at New York Comic Con, is now available. That is a sentence that thrills me, as Disney may have been able to present a panel about this upcoming feature at NYCC, but I am very happy to at least see footage from the actual film. Appropriately cryptic, but filled with ideas and a way to pique the interests of many, this is one of the original films coming next summer that has me very excited. Continue on to check out the new teaser trailer and a poster.

At its best, St. Vincent is a solid comedy-drama that features Bill Murray working at the best of his abilities as an actor to convey the sadness behind the guise of a smartass who has had a rough decline in later life. When the film does not work as well, it is because writer/director Theodore Melfi relies on a proven formula to do the work for him, despite the tonal balance one must carefully work with in order to succeed. Even with the problems in mind though, St. Vincent succeeds overall thanks to the casting of Murray and the nice level of chemistry he has with the cast around him, even if they are all on the path of a paint-by-numbers plot.

Being a great drummer is clearly no easy feat. One would not think a young jazz musician wanting to play drum at a music school would be the source for a gripping thriller, but then again, writer/director Damien Chazelle was responsible for writing the film Grand Piano, which was a thriller about a man forced to play the piano (or else!). That in mind, Whiplash is not a guilty pleasure take on a Hitchcockian thriller; it is an intensely focused drama that matches its ace lead performances with striking cinematic visuals to deliver a pretty fantastic film. This is a film that pushes its characters to their limits, in an effort to show what it means to be talented, passionate, and transfixed by getting something exactly right.

There is a certain category that a film like Obvious Child could easily fit into, as it features a female comedian turning in a comedic/slightly dramatic performance in a small comedy about a struggling woman finding new love, while dealing with her current life situation. This does not mean the film is inherently bad. Just last year I had a lot of love for Greta Gerwig in Frances Ha, but the year before that I had a lot less love for Gerwig in Lola Versus. Basically, films like this are of a certain type, but Obvious Child fit in a good way. Now the critically acclaimed sleeper has hit Blu-ray, so I have even more to go into about it.

There is a scene in The Judge that features the big city lawyer and his estranged father having a huge argument during a violent wind storm. It is just one of the many scenes that really want to hammer home the emotions on display. Despite featuring a solid cast and moments where they can shine, The Judge is a film that goes way overboard, when it comes to spelling out exactly how an audience should feel. Not helping is the very sentimental screenplay that must have read, “Go big,” at the end of a good majority of the scenes, as a note to both the actors and director. The film is a huge pile of clichés that seem to have been filmed in an effort to rake in awards consideration for the two acting Roberts featured. It is the kind of contrived courtroom drama that is designed to get an obvious audience response, despite a lack of any sort of real weight behind the film.

Initially, I think I was more interested in how I would be writing the title of this film for the review, rather than what I was hoping to get out of actually seeing it. I have settled on ‘Alexander’ or ‘ATHNGVBD,’ but really, I am happy to write about this actual film as well, because it is harmless fun. Adapting a feature length film from a 32-page children’s novel can only lead to so much success, depending on who is involved, but Rob Lieber’s script manages to extend the novel’s idea into a fun family comedy that does not celebrate the misfortune of Alexander and his family, but instead embraces the optimism required to hold a family together, despite the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad things that happen to them. As a result, the film works both as a broad comedy and as a family comedy with good things to take away from it.

The highly anticipated pirate adventure, Black Sails, centers on the tales of Captain Flint and his men and takes place twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “Treasure Island.” Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality. Penny Dreadful The Complete First Season is a title that I’m very excited to have received this week to review on Blu-ray. I was able to check out the first episode of Penny Dreadful utilizing Showtime On Demand this summer, but due to my hectic lifestyle and work schedule I was never able to follow up on the rest of the series even though I really wanted to. Life’s not always rainbows and puppies, but I digress. I’m just overjoyed that I finally now have the chance to watch and hopefully enjoy all eight episodes in glorious 1080p on my favorite format. It’s a series that NPR calls “scary, seductive, surprising and smart” and Variety claims that Penny Dreadful is “solidly entertaining, well casted and oozing with atmosphere.” Although I did not need them to make my mind up for me those two critiques alone are encouraging enough to make me want to watch this, but if you need more reasons, try this one on for size. The series stars the wildly popular Eva Green, famous for her sexy wardrobe or lack of in most recent roles such as 300: Rise of an Empire and Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Since the advent of television on DVD, one series has had a vocal push to get it out and available for purchase. The Wonder Years, the 1960s/early 70s coming of age television show was beloved and still cherished to this day. Many years went by and there were never any plans for it. Then it was discovered in the early/mid 2000s that the reason was because of music licensing rights. Contracts were different when The Wonder Years aired, and selling home video rights with the music was covered back then. The task to get all those rights together and taken care of would be an expensive and exhaustive process. Some shows, like Dawson’s Creek and Married With Children said to hell with it and released theirs with new temp track music and songs that take a way a little bit of the lust from which you remembered it. Well, time and patience has finally paid off for The Wonder Years as StarVista has put together the complete series with all the original music intact.
