Muppets Most Wanted (Blu-ray Review)

Muppets-Most-WantedThe Muppets was a ceremonious return of our Jim Henson puppeteered crew of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzy Bear, Gonzo and all our Muppet pals.  It was also a pretty sweeping success, so of course with there was going to be a sequel.  However, Jason Segel made it clear he was one-and-done so he was out.  Where to go next?  Well, they decided the Muppets are the star so lets just make a movie more focused on them.  The budget was kept similar but the results didn’t yield as much of the success as the former.  It managed to make just under half the what the first one did worldwide.  Luckily, as I said the budget was kept in check.  Will this be the last we see of our beloved Muppets for a while or is there enough belief to give it another go?  We’ll have to see.  But today, let’s talk about this sequel, Muppets Most Wanted. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Blu-ray Review)

When I moved to Austin, TX over a year ago from Cleveland, OH I expected my change of scenery to be quite stimulating and invigorating, but you all know that whole grass is always greener on the other side thing, right?  While the skies may not be grey all the time like in Cleveland, I would take that downtown skyline any day over the mini buildings that litter downtown Austin.  However, I say that not to be mean or derogatory, but only to illustrate a point because the same comparison can be made when analyzing recent DC super hero films to Marvel ones.  Although I believe the Nolan Batman trilogy to be some of the best superhero films ever made, I can clearly see where comic book purists can get off complaining that the onscreen events are too dark, brooding and unconventional in terms of how a comic book movie should look, pop and shine on the big screen.  I can accept that, so can most people, but also many cannot.  So where exactly am I going with all this nonsense? The Blacklist – Season 1 (DVD Review)

Blacklist ThumbOne of last year’s biggest new dramas for network television and sort of a show to help NBC in attempting to make a big comeback, was The Blacklist.  Its big selling point was that of actor James Spader, who has managed to turn himself into a television superstar in the last decade plus.  Not only was it met with ratings success, but critical acclaim came with it as well.  NBC has loved it so much it gave it both a second season and the coveted post-Superbowl time slot after the 2015 competition comes to a close.  I had never seen a second of the show aside from advertisements.  I’m usually hesitant about network TV dramas, but was intrigued by this one.   Continue reading ‘The Blacklist – Season 1 (DVD Review)’

Hell Of The Living Dead / Rats: Night Of Terror – Blood Soaked Double Feature (Blu-ray Review)

Hell-Rats-Blood-Soaked-Double-FeatureBlue Underground is returning to the Blu-ray business and kicking things off with a double feature.  A double feature from a pair of films featuring the collaboration of director Bruno Mattei and Claudio Fragasso, director of…Troll 2?  Yes, THAT Claudio Fragasso.  Hell Of The Living Dead and Rats: A Night Of Terror were films that Fragasso wrote and then co-directed with Mattei.  As a double feature, they are perfect for each other as they both feature groups trying to survive being hunted by a pack of vicious creatures out to eat them.  Double features are sometimes enough for these obscure releases, but Blue Underground has gone and attained some new interviews for this disc as well! ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Now With Less Ooze (Movie Review)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles TNWhen I think back to joys of my childhood some of my earliest thoughts of happiness revolve around family and sports, but quite honestly movies and comics.  Yep!  As a child, I had one wild imagination growing up and with no nearby childhood friends to play with I had to find ways to occupy my time and keep myself busy.  I swear I rehearsed that lightsaber duel as Luke Skywalker against Darth Vader in the Empire Strikes Back almost daily.  However, I digress because we are not here to talk Star Wars, but that of Ninja Turtles.  So remember, just five sentences ago I mentioned the word comics?  Yes!  Besides Groo, I can still remember those rated-R, crisp, black and white pages of those early Mirage Studios issues of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  That was 1984!  A lot has happened in the world of the four turtles since then, but possibly none more revolutionary than the casting of Megan Fox as April O’Neil in this newest onscreen reboot by Michael Bay’s production company, Platinum Dunes. Brandon’s Blu-ray Wishlist – August 7, 2014

Brandon's Blu-ray Wishlist THUMBWe’re almost to Expendables 3!  It comes out next week.  Still 2 movies left for the ‘Countdown To Expendables 3‘ series.  Today we focus on series mainstay, and one who’s action career started with a little pick me up by starring with Stallone in Rocky IV, Dolph Lundgren.  Dolph was supposed to be the next big thing and was given some iconic roles to lead off his career.  He was handed both He-Man and The Punisher (which in case you’re wondering why the choice today wasn’t this film, it IS available in Region B in two territories).  But, aside from action junkies, I don’t think Dolph ever really took off as large as he was supposed to.  However, Dolph never quit.  From Rocky IV to the present, the guy has been doing pure action movies.  Granted he’s gone from big theatrical releases, to minimal, to straight-to-video…but still working nonetheless.  During his heyday I was never a big fan, but looking back, I’ve taken to the guy and have really enjoyed going back to his old films for another look. WILLOW CREEK Arrives On Dark Sky Films Blu-ray 9/9!

Willow-CreekWriter-director Bobcat Goldthwait takes a radical departure from his recent string of black comedies(God Bless America, World’s Greatest Dad) to create a film that shows there are still surprises and shocks to be had in the found-footage genre pioneered by The Blair Witch Project. In her review inThe New York Times, Jeannette Catsoulis pointed out Goldthwait “engineers a static, almost wordless 19-minute shot inside a tent that generates more tension than many horror directors achieve with a swarm of Foley artists and a healthier budget. This canny exploitation of the power of silence is unnerving.” Tom Huddleston of Time Out London called the film “a whole lot of jarring, juddering fun.” Brian Orndorf of Blu-ray.com said, “It’s smaller in scope and horror ambition, which automatically makes it more enjoyable than most of its brethren, creating a mix of local color and camping disaster that’s basic but frightfully effective.” “WILLOW CREEK does everything a little bit better than others of its kind,” praised Scott Tobias of TheDissolve.com. T-U-R-T-L-E Average (Movie Review)

turtle bannerThere is a scene where Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) seemed to reveal its true colors.  It features William Fichtner’s villainous character dressed in all black, sporting an Under Armour top, and looking about as close as he can to producer Michael Bay, while explaining his nefarious plot that felt like a metaphor for blockbuster superhero movies.  While standing in a very glossy and elaborately designed set, in the midst of fantastical CG creations, we hear about a dreaded disease that will be spread, only to have the same villains release a cure and make billions as a result.  Having just been treated to Guardians of the Galaxy a week prior, TMNT feels like another emotionless superhero film produced by Hollywood, while a potentially huge money makers seek to reassure some faith in these studio blockbusters.  That in mind, it is not that TMNT is all that bad, it just feels like a generic film rolling off an assembly line.

Stage Fright (DVD Review)

Stage-FrightTo start off, this is a review of the 2014 film Stage Fright and not the 1987 horror film that will be releasing on Blu-ray from Blue Underground this fall.  When word first came to me about Stage Fright, I got pretty excited.  A slasher film done as a musical!  Oh hell yes.  Seems like a devious Brandon Peters dream come true.  This past Spring it was released wide on VOD where I was able to rent it.  The film started off with a great big bang, but as it wore on, slowly just kind of drifted past the greatness of its first act.  When Brian White (aka Blu-ray Jesus) offered this one up for review, I was eager to give this film a second shot with knowledge of knowing where it was leading this time.  The first time’s mild disappointment may have been because it wasn’t the film “I” wanted it to be and with this second viewing I could accept it more for what they did give me.
