Last week I was privileged enough to have a phone interview with both the star and director of one of my favorite films this year, BLUE RUIN. Please note that I don’t much fancy schmancy recording equipment to do all this proper, but I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. Its audible and clear, that’s all you need haha. I had a blast in my short time with these two. Unfortunately the very last minute is gone forever because my recording device overheated. All you’re missing me asking them about Murder Party coming to Blu-ray. They said they want it to happen and have talked about it, but there’s nothing at this time. But they did say to start getting #MurderPartyBlu-ray going and maybe that would help. Anywho, I’ll quit typing so you can listen to me yap with them. I hope you enjoy! Scream Factory is importing Jamie Osorio Marquez 2011 military thriller THE SQUAD (aka El paramo) to Blu-ray on October 21 as they have announced today. It joins up with Nightbreed and The Vincent Price Collection Volume 2 as a part of their exciting October release slate. I’ve not heard of this one, but the plot synopsis has me more than intrigued. Below you can check out the details of this exciting release.

Ever since House Of The Devil, Ti West will always have my attention and my dollar. I’m very interested in anything he does. His latest effort, The Sacrament, I caught on VOD a few months ago as it didn’t play in any theaters here. And its a pretty unique little animal he’s constructed. Yes, groan now, it uses the found footage device as its storytelling method. However, it overcomes that with some strong performances from its characters (including Amy Seimetz! yay!) who don’t seem treat it like its a found footage movie. It’s also one of those eerie movies that get right under your skin. Ti West infuses his patience and restraint once again in this slow-burn thriller. Even when everything seems ok in this film, you just don’t trust it and you feel very uncomfortable. You’ll be able to check it out for yourself on Blu-ray in a little under a month. One little complaint…I wish they had used the original theatrical poster for the cover of the Blu-ray. It was so damn cool. This is just, well, mediocre and very “also ran”. I called this back on April 3, “but anyway”. Yes, we have another Wishlist title making its way to glorious Blu-ray. The Farrelly Brothers’ severely underrated Woody Harrelson/Randy Quaid/Vanessa Angel/Billy Murray bowling comedy is set to drop in just a few months. And its porting its extras over as well as having some new interviews. Its being sold as a “cult comedy” so it looks like Aaron Neuwirth and myself are not its only fans. This may wind up being just some cheap $9.99 bargain bin Blu-ray in the end, but that $9.99 bargain bin Blu-ray is my X marks the spot gold inside a treasure chest on Skull Island. I’m excited and you should be too, to give this overlooked film another try. To read my plead for it to come to Blu-ray CLICK HERE, and to find all the information on this release scroll down! Just think about 90s Vanessa Angel in high definition for moment, shall we? Continue reading ‘KINGPIN Rolls Onto Blu-ray October 14!’

I am sooooo damn excited for this box set I just can’t stand it. I’ve owned everything and anything from this series and getting it again has me more excited than ever. TONS of new material coming your way folks. They have Scream Factory’d Halloween 6: Producer’s Cut, Halloween: H20, Halloween 4 and Halloween 5 for your liking. Halloween 4 and 5 have the same discs Anchor Bay released, but their mini retrospective docs appear on Disc 15 (yes, disc 15!!!). And look at all these awesome people who came onboard for this. It is OUTSTANDING! Michael Myers pretty much has said “take that Jason! Take that Freddy! What’s your name…Chucky?” If you haven’t pre-ordered it yet, c’mon…what are you waiting for? Today’s announcement is proof you are getting a STEAL with that price. Is it freaking September yet? I cannot wait! When a young couple moves into a new home, they find a mysterious doll that changes their lives forever in the horror thriller BABY BLUES, debuting on Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital Sept. 2 from Well Go USA Entertainment. Po-Chih Leong (Hong Kong 1941) directed this terrifying story of a woman (newcomer Janelle Sing), pregnant with twins, who has a miscarriage and gives birth to only one child. Suffering from postpartum depression, her husband (Raymond Lam, Saving General Yang) seeks help and discovers a mysterious doll that may be the source of their problems. BABY BLUES also stars Kate Tsui (Eye in the Sky), Karena Ng (Magic to Win) and Hoi- Pang Lo (The Grandmaster).

Godzilla was one of my most anticipated summer blockbusters of 2014 and I was really glad that it delivered (Review HERE). We now have word today that Godzilla will be making its way onto Blu-ray on September 16th. The Blu-ray appears to be packed with extras, as well as some bonus packaging goodies described in this press release. This is of course the film that re-introduces the king of the monsters into the modern world, under the hand of director Gareth Edwards, with co-stars that include Aaron Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, and more. I’ll be excited to see what else is revealed on this Blu-ray, but for now, check out the official word on what will be included by continuing on in this post.

All Wings Report In! On the set of Star Wars: Episode VII, Director J.J. Abrams was interrupted by an X-Wing pilot and rogue robot as he announced the chance for fans to win an advance private screening of Star Wars: Episode VII. “We are so grateful for the support that the fans from over 119 countries have shown for Force for Change,” said Abrams. “As we close this final week, we’ve added an additional prize that allows the fans the opportunity to see the movie early as a thank you for supporting such a great cause as UNICEF’s innovative, lifesaving work for children.” By contributing at any level by July 25th, participants will be eligible for all prizes including a chance to be in the movie. Here comes the Ong-Bak trilogy in time for the release of The Protector 2. This is the home franchise for martial arts and Muay Thai expert Tony Jaa. For those of you wondering right off the bat, no, there is nothing new to this box set that hasn’t been out already. The only addition is a really nice sleeve to put all 3 films in. So, no there is no reason to pick this up if you already have it. The cases, discs and bonus features are all identical aside from the fact that they all now have a trailer for The Protector 2 on them preceding the menu. If you don’t own the Ong-Bak trilogy though, we have plenty to discuss today! Continue reading ‘Ong-Bak Trilogy (Blu-ray)’
When I think back to my earliest childhood and ponder about television shows that aired way before this sexy beast who’s typing this ever walked the Earth, I fondly recall such shows a Happy Days, Leave it to Beaver and of course who can forget everyone’s favorite, crazy redhead, Lucille Ball, and her equally crazy onscreen husband, Desi Arnaz, in I Love Lucy. In all honesty, that’s one of those rare black & white series, in my opinion, that truly has transcended the generations as I can still turn it on the boob tube now and laugh equally as hard at Lucy and her onscreen antics as I did when I was a child at the dinner table or as a teenager after school (we did not have the Internet back then and only six television channels). So imagine my joy when CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount announced they were bringing I Love Lucy to my favorite home media format, Blu-ray. And not only that, but every episode has been transferred from the original camera negative, producing crisp details, and rich sharp blacks. Come on! I’ll show you around this 6-disc Blu-ray television set! Continue reading ‘I Love Lucy: Ultimate Season One (Blu-ray Review)’
VISITORS is the fourth collaboration of director Godfrey Reggio and composer Philip Glass together with filmmaker Jon Kane, advancing the film form pioneered by The Qatsi Trilogy (Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and Naqoyqatsi): the non-spoken narrative experience where each viewer s response is radically different yet undeniably visceral. As Reggio explains, VISITORS is aimed at the solar plexus, at the appetite within us all, the atmosphere of our soul. I see the film as a meditation, as a transcendental event. Comprised of only seventy-four shots, a series of human, animal and landscape portraits, VISITORS takes movie watchers on an emotional journey to the moon and back. As a wondrous work of artistic achievement…art with a capital A (Austin Chronicle), VISITORS produces massive effects and moves into a class of film all its own. Prolific actor Diego Luna (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Rudo Y Cursi) makes his feature film-directing debut with the biopic Cesar Chavez. Luna assembles an ensemble cast of characters to bring the legendary real life story and struggle of the man who would organize the migrant farmworkers of California and demand better working conditions for these people. He formed the first union for farmworkers and it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. I was curious about Cesar Chavez since I didn’t get to see it in theaters due to it’s limited release schedule but am happy to have the opportunity to review the Blu-ray. I present to you Cesar Chavez.
Today we have an interesting circumstance. Something that doesn’t really happen frequently anymore. A film that was cut because of its message and redistributed to try and look like it had a different one. Olive Films is releasing Lewis Milestone’s The North Star, but under its other title Armored Attack. Don’t worry, both films come with this release and have been given fresh high definition transfers. Armored Attack is the 1957 reissue of The North Star that featured a less positive focus on the Russian uprising as they were now American enemies of the time. Its finale features a narration about Hungarians fighting the Red Army during the Hungarian uprising of 1956 instead of what it really is…Soviets rising up against Nazi soldiers. From the creator of Ghost in the Shell and the director of Appleseed comes the intense post-apocalyptic prequel, Appleseed: Alpha. Left to survive in a post-World War society, two mercenary soldiers – Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos – are sent on a mission on the outskirts of their war-torn city. During the operation, they run into Iris and Olson, two citizens from the utopian city of Olympus, who might have a way to save the world but the ruthless Talos and the scheming warlord Two Horns have their own plans. It’s up to Deunan and Briareos to safeguard their newfound contacts and help save humanity’s last hope.
Here’s another little film from last year I was trying to spread the word out on. THE BATTERY is the best zombie film in maybe a decade. Jeremy Gardner takes a very low budget, simplistic approach and comes up with possibly one of the most realistic portrayals of the zombie apocalypse. I can’t sing this movie high enough praises. Everyone was wondering who was going to get to release it on home video and BOOM, like all the other prayers they seem to answer, Scream Factory came through. I can say without a doubt this is THE BEST modern title they’ve put out. Its that damn good. See for yourself on September 16!
