The biggest question I have about Deliver Us from Evil, a film that mixes a police procedural plot with exorcism, is why have it released on July 4th weekend? I understand counter programming and all, but a grimy, R-rated horror feature does not exactly seem like the choice for Independence Day, regardless of producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s name being attached to the film. That said, whether or not audiences flock to see HULK and Carlos the assassin exorcise the demons on its opening weekend, Deliver Us from Evil has a neat setup that feels like a throwback detective story fitted with effective atmospheric direction from Scott Derrickson.

It is unfortunate that Tammy does not quite work overall. Here we have a character-based, R-rated comedy, featuring a large number of female characters, with ideas that extend beyond big-budgeted set pieces, and it is arriving in theaters just in time for the Fourth of July. Melissa McCarthy fans may certainly enjoy the opportunity given to her and her husband, Ben Falcone, who directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with McCarthy, but perhaps not those who are expecting a traditional slapstick comedy. Or maybe it is the other way around. What Tammy has in character exploration and some actual pathos, whenever McCarthy settles down with her antics, it loses whenever the film amps up its randomness, certain comedy routines, and disjointed plotting. It makes the film an interesting watch, just not one that I found entirely worthwhile, as a whole.

I look forward to seeing The Walking Dead’s presence at Comic Con this year, as they always have pretty elaborate set ups on the showroom floor, let along super popular panels. A few years back I was happy to participate in The Walking Dead Escape. This is The Walking Dead-themed obstacle course that takes over San Diego’s Petco Park during Comic Con. It is a ton of fun to run away from zombies, let alone admire the zombie makeup creations on regular folk who are apparently happy to go after geeks running through a baseball stadium in full on zombie makeup for hours at a time. It is returning to Comic Con once again this year, along with several other stops around the country. Read on to learn more, including details on deals for signing up early!

Nana nana nana nana, nana nana nana nana BATMAN! So this is awesome. While many are just fine with Christopher Nolan’s darker take on The Dark Knight, there are still many that love the campy 60s Batman television series starring Adam West and Burt Ward. Many have been wanting a release of this TV series for a very long time and now it is finally happening. This is making for a great initial Comic Con 2014 post, as we now have a brief teaser for the upcoming box set of the complete Batman television series, along with an announcement for the panel taking place in Hall H. Continue on to see the video and learn about when you can see this panel, if you are in fact going to Comic Con.

Get set for another outrageously inappropriate bout of fantasy football madness with Season Five of The League, including 11 UNRATED extended episodes. After the draft at Andre’s bachelor party nearly derails his wedding, Rafi plots Kevin’s death, Taco tries life without weed, Pete pays Ruxin the ultimate disrespect, and Kevin and Jenny’s “sexiversary” celebration ends very, very badly. Please keep in mind that this set will also be available on DVD. We’ve noticed that not every recent television set has been announced as Blu-ray. If this changes then we will update the PR release accordingly. Continue reading ‘The League: The Complete Fifth Season on Blu-ray & DVD September 2nd!’

I may not have enjoyed the acclaimed Showtime series Homeland as much as I have since its fantastic first season, but this is a series I certainly still enjoy quite a bit and am still compelled to see play out further, especially given how the third season ended. Speaking of which, the third season of Homeland is coming to Blu-ray on September 9, with a few special extras to go with it. For those that have only caught up on the second season, some things have obviously changed, but the show still has plenty of big surprises up its sleeve, along with a pretty fantastic finale to look forward too. Continue on to learn more about this upcoming Blu-ray release.

Wow. Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the ground. We’ve known for about a year that Scream Factory was going to put out the director’s cut of Clive Barker’s cult classic Nightbreed. But I don’t think in our wildest imaginations we thought THIS would be what’s coming. There are 2 releases here. One is the standard director’s cut Blu-ray which is what I think we all assumed this was going to be. BUT WAIT! A limited edition (5,000) set with 3 discs INCLUDING the theatrical cut which means WARNER BROS ACTUALLY SUB LICENSED SOMETHING!!! Also comes with a book and a 3rd disc (exclusive to the set) crammed with bonus material. Both editions also have their own exclusive artwork. It comes out just before Halloween hits too. We were all excited about this, but man, they really went and outdid themselves with this one. Continue reading ‘Scream Factory Is Not Messing Around With NIGHTBREED: DIRECTOR’S CUT Blu-ray!’

Last year, mainstream audiences were given the chance to check out Prisoners, a kidnapping drama from director Denis Villeneuve. Many gave praise to Hugh Jackman taking his Wolverine rage and putting it into an average guy who just wanted to find his daughter. I liked Jackman, but it was Jake Gyllenhaal’s turn as Det. Loki who really impressed me. Before making Prisoners, Villeneuve and Gyllenhaal actually teamed up for a much smaller film, Enemy. Seeing this psychological thriller has now led me to believe that this is an actor/director pairing I want to continue to see. This is a bizarre film that may be one of my favorite films of this year that I would have the hardest time of recommending to others, as it basically has a simple idea and extrapolates from there, in an effort to make this haunting look at one’s own identity.

Guilame Canet’s Blood Ties is an American-language remake of the 2008 French film Les liens du sang. The film went to Cannes and really didn’t make much noise. It wasn’t a part of the film competition but received screen in the “Out Of Competition” category. And I can tell you it was just a surprise to me to see this thing screen here in the US this year, but of course in the limited variety. When I did the press release for the film it interested me enough on two levels; the cast and the setting of the film. A 70s crime film will always harken back fond memories to stuff from the likes of The French Connection during one of my favorite decades of cinema. No, i didn’t go into thinking it would be THAT good (that’s expecting it to be a perfect film, haha). I was just looking for something to, like always, merely entertain me and have me able to find merits on some level for it. Continue reading ‘Blood Ties (Blu-ray Review)’

Does anybody own the old Halloween: H20 DVD that came out back in 1998? You know, the one that was set in 4:3 Letterbox and included the worthless bonus features of ‘Trivia’ and a Creed music video? On the back of that box it said there was a commentary with Jamie Lee Curtis and Steve Miner. On the disc however, no such thing existed. Forever, people wondered what happened to it. Why was it scrapped? Is it laying around here somewhere? Would it pop up on the Blu-ray…nope…they can’t even get the correct framing on that thing. Apparently that commentary was never recorded. BUT, thank you Scream Factory (they’re doing the bonus, not Anchor Bay)! It’s going to happen and be moderated by horor community fan favorite Sean Clark. This is pretty big too, as Steve Miner doesn’t like to do commentaries. As proof that this isn’t like last time, Anchor Bay has sent along a photo! Cannot wait for what will likely be the best Blu-ray release of the year (in my eyes)! Oh, and I also included a photo of the back of the DVD case to show you guys I’m not off my rocker on that. I enjoy science fiction stories quite a bit. Whether it ranges from plausible ideas regarding the future of our current society or to things a bit more abstract, I love the creativity on display. This especially goes for sci-fi films, which allow a large number of filmmakers, actors, production designers, etc., to develop worlds, stories, characters, and concepts, in an effort to put something truly audacious into the theater for people to enjoy. Sometimes that works out quite well, sometimes it is okay, and other times it can be forgettable. Snowpiercer is the kind of film that sits near the top of the pile. It combines skilled filmmaking, big ideas, and some fine, warp-minded writing to create a feature fully prepared to be entertaining, strange, darkly humorous, and plenty of other things that all make it rather brilliant.
