Let’s let out a collective “Hail Hydra” as Disney and Marvel have announced the Blu-ray release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. This terrific political thriller disguised as a superhero film easily won over audiences not too long ago and piled on the dough at the box office. Personally, I quite loved the film and the Captain America portion of the Avengers tales have easily been my favorite of the bunch. This is also the last we’ll see of an Avenger in a live action Marvel film until Age Of Ultron next summer. But we’re also promised Captain America three years in a row as Captain America 3 comes out the following summer. Below you’ll find all the details on this exciting release that I can almost guarantee will razzle and dazzle as well as spice up your player a bit on Blu-ray.

On the surface, placing audiences inside the head of one of the more memorable Disney villains of all time seems like a pretty interesting idea. Add to that a casting choice that has rarely seemed any less perfect and you have a high concept Disney film with built in appeal from multiple standpoints. I only wish the film actually delivered more fun to go along with its premise. Maleficent no doubt delivers on the visual noise one would expect from a big budget, live-action fantasy film and Angelina Jolie’s return to the big screen, in front of the camera for the first time in 4 years, is certainly the most worthwhile aspect of the film, but for a film with so much to look at, there was not enough going on to keep it engaging.

Scream Factory keeps rolling out the underrated gems. On August 26th they’re giving us the ghost tale Legend Of Hell House starring Roddy McDowall. This will cap off their, frankly amazing, “Summer Of Fear” that they’ve been just rather acing. It will lead us all into a Fall that will continue their remarkable run. But today, its all about the Hell House. You can find the dirty details on this haunting release below!

The surprising thing about Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West is how devoted to the genre it actually is. While I can only think of so many western comedies offhand, there are plenty of ways to turn the genre on its head and have a lot of fun with it. MacFarlane is happy to dive into that well, but while making fun of the genre, he appears to really respect it. The issue then becomes how to make a film that looks like a western and sounds like a western into a film that is entertaining for the audiences showing up, based on the goodwill created by Ted or Family Guy. Unfortunately, while MacFarlane is known for his comedic abilities, the laughs are not nearly strong enough to go along with a film that admirably spends its time on recreating the feel of a western, while rooting itself in character.

Here comes another one of those big time saves from Scream Factory. The 50s monster movie throwback film, Deadly Eyes never made it past VHS until now. While not their biggest format jump/save/resurrection this summer (just wait), it certainly is super cool. It gets to make the jump to prestigious Blu-ray. I’m not familiar with the film, but it sounds pretty fun. Today they’ve unveiled the specs including new bonus features for the film that entail a slew of new interviews with the cast and crew of Deadly Eyes (including Happy Birthday To Me and Curtains’ Lesleh Donaldson!!!) . This one comes out July 15th as a part of the “Summer Of Fear” and you can pre-order it below as well as get the full rundown from Scream Factory. Here’s a film that I have been wanting to check out, but just could not make any screenings: Jodorowsky’s Dune – An official selection at the 2013 Cannes, Telluride, Toronto and AFI Film Festivals, the critically acclaimed JODOROWSKY’S DUNE will debut July 8 on Blu-ray Combo Pack* and Digital from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. As an auteur whose midnight movie classics, El Topo and The Holy Mountain, captivated enthusiastic audiences, cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky set his sights on his most ambitious project yet – a feature film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s futuristic best-seller, “Dune.” Although his dreams were never realized, the story of Jodorowsky’s “Dune” has placed him at the vanguard of international cinema. This film is a documentary about that project.

Community has essentially been a cult favorite TV series that happened to have been in a primetime television slot for the past few years and it looks like it has now finally come to an end, assuming their is no Veronica Mars-style Kickstarter campaign or something similar to bring it back. That said, the show at least ended with a strong season thanks to the return presence of showrunner and creator Dan Harmon, along with the frequent guest presence of John Oliver and Breaking Bad’s Jonathan Banks, among many others. With all that said, the DVD for this fifth and presumably final season arrives August 5th and is packed with commentaries and more! Read on to learn more about this upcoming release.

Hey, we are a Blu-ray site, might as well let everyone know when cool Blu-ray things are happening, right? Well, with the new release of Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic: with Steve Zissou making its debut on Blu-ray this week, it seems that Amazon is having a sale in its honor. All of the previous Criterion Collection editions of Wes Anderson’s film are currently on sale. While Criterion Blu-rays are not exactly cheap, this sale makes them a bit cheaper for a limited time, June 1st in fact, so if you were looking to find Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, or my current contender for Blu-ray of the year, Fantastic Mr. Fox, for a decent a good price and don’t want to wait for another Barnes & Noble sale, continue on with this post to find order links for all of these Blu-rays, which are all packed with features and look and sound fantastic.

Do you want to play a game? Ah, not that kind of game, and not that kind of movie. 13 Sins is the latest horror film from director Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) and it features a bit of an ensemble cast. There’s Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Rutina Wesley (True Blood), and more. I didn’t know too much about the film going into it, so I was hoping to be surprised, as the premise was pretty intriguing all things considered. How’s the Blu-ray you ask? Keep on reading to find out!

After she is drugged and abducted, Jamie (Rachel Nichols, Continuum) awakens to find herself in a concrete bunker where she meets fellow abductee Sabrina (Zoe Bell, Death Proof). Before long the two women discover that they are in a modern-day coliseum, where they and 48 other women have been selected to fight to the death in order to save both themselves and their loved ones. Co-starring genre favorites Doug Jones (Hellboy) and Sherilyn Fenn (Twin Peaks), director Josh C. Waller s RAZE is a no-holds-barred assault on the senses featuring some of the most brutal action combat ever put on film. In this contest, may the best woman win.

Every now and then you get a batch of older, similarly-themed films released on Blu-ray and Fox has recently delivered Weekend At Bernie’s (Reviewed HERE), Revenge of the Nerds (Reviewed HERE), and Bachelor Party, which I am reviewing now. This is the not-so-classic 80s party film, starring Tom Hanks mere months after finding success with the film Splash, beginning his break away from his TV-stardom and into feature films. It is a simple film that has a mix of Hanks’ natural charm and the rowdiness of these types of movies. Now it is on movies for anyone who wanted to take this movie to the HD level.

Take note, Yahoo. Death Spa (known in other countries as Witch Bitch – no joke!) IS exactly what a cult film is. This little exploitation horror film came and went back in 1989, went to video and sort disappeared. MPI has brought it to both Blu-ray and DVD in the US in this new special edition. Its coming to us under their Gorgon Video label. And as an aside, I had never seen anything from the Gorgon Video label in the past. So, let me tell you I was all sorts of amused and loving their logo when it came up before the menu. You win a ton of nostalgia points for that, Gorgon Video. Anyway, this film proves to be an absolute treat and there was an absolute sense of care and importance when it comes to this release. Continue reading ‘Death Spa – Unrated (Blu-ray Review)’

Bushido Man is a pretty big deal here for Shout! Factory. In addition to this release, they’ll also be putting out this same film but edited into a web series focusing on each fight as well. That series will be out this Monday, two weeks before the release of this Blu-ray. I have further details regarding the web series version of the film and you can see that by clicking HERE. Bushido man has had quite the cult following overseas, primarily in Japan and Germany. The film was also a big hit at the Fantasia International Film Festival in 2013. If you’re into martial arts films that feature a lot of different fighting styles and disciplines within one film, then this film is definitely the ticket. Its a simple film with a lot of kicking butt. Continue reading ‘Bushido Man: Seven Deadly Battles (Blu-ray Review)’

I’ve always been a pretty solid fan of the Jack Ryan franchise. The first one I saw was Clear And Present Danger, where some friends and I just randomly went to a movie on an afternoon and saw it. It was like my first super adult type movie I think I saw in the theater (or at least it felt like that, a film dealing more in politics and stuff). I was in middle school so it felt much more mature to me. But, I enjoyed it quite a bit, so I went back and watched the other two. And, I also wasn’t a hater of The Sum Of All Fears when Ben Affleck took on the role either. Still found it to be a fun and engaging film. Now, when wind came they were making another one, I was interested. Not super jacked, but I was looking forward to eventually seeing it. And now that time has come.
